The prosecutors were given the task of coming up with a story that would shock the world and make people believe that that was what the counterculture movement could lead to. The case for insanity was built around asking him questions like "What is the meaning of life? Do you worship the devil? Are you gay?"

I'm not defending him, however it's interesting how the trial lawyers on the case were manipulating his image, as most interviewers either loaded questions to get weird spaced out answers or goaded him into fits of anger.
