Dont think the dog should have been applauded and given his toy after, it could have possible been an innocent person he just done that too......Might as well have just bitten the officer if he was going to get the same response no matter what he did.....
Xepherya I completely agree. I think the officer praised the dog out of embarrassment but it is far to serious to allow it to not follow commands. I think the assistant let him take his sleeve because he knew how dangerous the dog could be with the crowd.
I agree about the helper. He allowed the dog the sleeve, but did NOT give the dog the fight he would have gotten had he followed commands.
If the officer is too embarrassed to correct his dog, he shouldn't be a K9 handler. I will say both dog and handler look inexperienced. I'm sure a more seasoned handler would have corrected the dog, crowd be damned.
@asrotties its not that the dog is necessarily disobedient but that the dog could also sense danger to his handler (officer) and attack..even though all of this is staged for our enjoyment..the dog only knows that its real..he is biting to protect the officer from a potentially dangerous situation. And also in real life the officer would not take the dog off leash like this either..got to look at everything from the dogs prospective
First of all, you don't even know what the scenario is, and the guy who was bit could have had something in his hand that we didn't see. Even if it was an accidental bite, this dog could very well be new, and guess what, dogs (like humans) are not machines and can make mistakes. And regarding the audience cheering, they don't know what the hell their looking for... a dog bit a guy at a dog biting demonstration... of course they're going to cheer!
It doesn't matter if there was something in the helper's hand. The dog is to FOLLOW COMMAND until told otherwise, or his handler is under threat.
The dog can be new and inexperienced, but it is the job of the handler to correct improper behavior. To not do so is detrimental to the handler, dog, and the public.
These dogs need to follow orders to keep everyone SAFE! If he broke like that on an armed suspect, it could mean death for handler AND K9
@Xepherya are you a DOG..Then how to do you know that the dog didn't feel that his handler was in danger..The dog doesn't know this is fake..he was doing his job..and For future reference the handler does not do off leash obedience in real life situations..i should know im a handler
Xepherya I've noticed most events like this the crowd always laughs seeing this, even if it is done right. I see nothing funny about this work, and I'm sure you would agree, if he's biting when he was commanded otherwise he really shouldn't be doing this on the force yet. They need to proof his biting with muzzle work, more obedience, and not risk accidental bites to bad guys who shouldn't get bit....which I'm sure happens occasionally.

That is pretty god damn shocking! That dog is no where near ready to leave the training yard let alone be a police dog or give demonstrations!

The dog shouldn't have been rewarded for that bite. He should have been taken immediately off that sleeve.
The audience thinks it was funny....it's not funny...it's dangerous.
