I hope you are not so Utopian to believe that the private sector can save every 64 year old woman that can live for $4,000 a month; most states rely almost entirely on the private sector and cases like this still happen everyday.
In the private sector, these decisions are made to deny as much as possible, to preserve excessive lifestyle and very posh luncheons with golden spoons. Awaiting answer! you act as if this is not already happening with the private sector :p When the government makes these decisions it is based on budgetary concerns and scientific statistics to save as many lives possible first priority, rather then private sector rationing which preserves administrative costs first before considering lives, hence the "cost factor".
The motivational structure with private insurance is all wrong. You make a profit exactly to the degree that you take money in and avoid paying it out whenever possible. No system is perfect, and anything can be done poorly, but when you know going in that the switches are set all wrong, that does make a difference.
It amazes me that people don't simply follow the first rule of investigation: Follow the money. Who stands to lose or gain billions?
When the government controls the health care system and they say no your toast, there is no other health care system to go to in the US. The Canada population has the option of going to the US for care when their system has given them the death sentence. Even the present system if your insurance turns you down you can go the doctor and hospital and make a private deal, pay cash over time or ask for charity, to get the care that you want.
Aaaand it's just that easy! Private deal, pay cash, or get charity, and you get the care you want! (And if you can't, you really didn't deserve it anyhow.)

And which private insurance would have paid that bill, or at least not stalled it until death? You really believe the private sector would have saved her? And nobody prevented her from getting private insurance right? Its a free country. Perhaps she couldn't afford private insurance, in which case, she would have likely died i any other state as uninsured, only sooner, because most states don't give as much care as Oregon. Example, the south.
The death panel is the "advisory committee panel" found in the bill which will re-allocate funding from the chronically ill, elder and others with what the govt considers have untreatable diseases/conditions. Care will be rationed to the elderly and reallocated to others that the govt as "treatable". Funds are to be limited to individuals will a label of "expendable" based on health care guidelines/regulations, Useless eaters any one. This is how this administration will treat US citizens.
Umm, I live in NYC, and we already socialized our medicine and pharmacies years ago. ALL medical care and medicine is a legal RIGHT. We don't have death panels. On top of that we also have a public insurance option. If anything goes wrong, I call up my elected officials and because it is 100% government owned, they have full sanction authority, and there is no profit. And no, we still have democratic elections ;) Why doesn't the country just copy us, since we already did it right?
There are definitely problems with insurance companies!! The difference is that ALL of those problems could be ELIMINATED by ending the government's interference, and allowing free market competition to weed out bad companies and bad behavior, and to lower rates. Once the government takes control, their DEATH PANELS will be here forever.
I didn't say I was against changing the law on pre existing, just pointing out there is an obvious logic to denying insurance to someone who already has a medical condition. It would be like a dead man walking in and asking for life insurance.

THERE IS NO HEALTH CARE CRISIS IN AMERICA!!! Our system could definitely use improvement, but Obama's plan will completely DESTROY health care in America. Tort reform would IMMEDIATELY reduce costs. Allowing citizens to buy insurance across state lines would force insurance companies to compete. HUGE cost reductions and improvement of service would be immediate. Democratic politicians aren't interested in improving the system. All they want is bigger government, more power and higher taxes!
Two problems that I see with this point. One, forcing insurance companies to compete for the citizens is pointless if those citizens are unemployed. How can someone buy health insurance if there is no available income? Two, let's say we are to accept the conservative estimate that "only 5 million" Americans are uninsured - and I feel it is really much higher, but still...that's 5 million without health insurance. That's more people than the 2007 census of South Carolina. Is that not a crisis?
Again, Our economy will recover and unemployment will go down if the government will just stop interfering! As for the uninsured, the actual number may be as high as 10-12 million. That is a cause for concern; a very good reason to implement changes that would actually improve the situation. It is NOT a reason to DESTROY healthcare for the other 288 million. If the national unemployment rating is close to 10% already (and I believe it's actually higher than that) then what is there to help those Americans currently without health insurance? Health care isn't the crisis. GOVERNMENT IS! Government created the economic slump by FORCING banks to extend loans to people who couldn't repay. BUSH and OBAMA turned that slump into a full-blown crisis by destroying confidence in our ability to recover, by selling our future to pay for pork and graft. TARP, the "stimulus bill" have created a debt that we can NEVER repay. Industry and free market CAPITALISM hold the key to our recovery, but they are being TAXED AND REGULATED out of existence.
Well that still hasn't answered any of my questions so I'll just continue from my last post.
So the continually rising costs of health care (you know...the reason Obama won the election in the first place?) has nothing to do with the loss in economy? Has it not contributed to housing loss through medical bankruptcy for many families? (Re: Medical Bankruptcy in the United States, 2007, published by the American Journal of Medicine.)
And, as far as rationing health care - when has private insurance companies NOT rationed health care? Individuals have made decisions on who can receive health care, and at least from my perspective, those decisions were made over COST. And, if those costs continue to rise, (and I don't see them dropping so far!) then my question again is, how will this suddenly "destroy" health care. You know...as compared to the performance it's had over the past several years.
And to clarify, the "stimulus bill" is not TARP. TARP is the program the US government used to purchase "troubled assets" in 2008. And in my opinion, a stupid move that should never have happened. The "stimulus package," depending on which one you are referring to, is actually several acts in one several of which extend unemployment benefits, rescinds taxes on unemployment benefits, and allows more tax credits for education. I don't see how that turns the economic crisis into a "slump."

There are none so blind as those who will not see! Government takeover of health care will take the biggest problems with our current system and make them worse... FOREVER. The actual solutions being proposed by republicans may be late in coming, but they are being completely ignored by democrats. The answer to "evil insurance companies" is to REDUCE government interference. There are currently over a thousand insurance companies in America, but only a small handfull are allowed in each state. Eliminating that restriction would open up free market competition which would immediately lead to better service and lower prices. Tort reform would reduce the cost of malpractice insurance which would reduce the cost of health care. Unfortunately, democrats won't listen to real solutions.
Death Panels are real, you just have to understand them. Think about the doctors who will counsel you as Best Buy, think of healthcare as an electronic device, and finally, think of the advice to terminate early as the warranty plan. The trick is to offer electronics at really low prices that draw customers in so Best Buy can pitch the warranty. Best Buy makes money off the warranty not the product. End of Life counseling is just an opportunity to pitch terminating someones life early.

The difference is that insurance companies can deny COVERAGE (as in you can still get it but pay for it yourself) while the government denies CARE (the actual treatment).
I have no health care and most likely wont until Medicare kicks in. Have you noticed the people freaking out HAVE health insurance? Those WITH insurance have nothing to worry about! You are not being forced into a government program its a CHOICE.
My uninsured full time working daughter with 3 grandchildren, unemployed boyfriend and I have no insurance and therefore go without. The fear mongers will understand some day if they ever get injured or loose their job.

You can appeal the insurance company. In the Health Care Bill it states, I have READ it, that there is NO appeal process to the committee that determines eligability. While I was in my halo my lawyer had to look HARD for doctors that would treat me because of the insurance I had. They were worried they wouldnt get paid. In the end we found one but I can tell you I was in no condition for that shit. I was in agony and being declined by doctors did not help.

Basically what ended up happening was my lawyer and I had to constantly be fighting with the insurance company and doctors the entire time I was in my halo. Btw a halo is a ring screwed onto someones head to keeo them from moving their neck. I broke my neck. I've been wondering the same thing. the whole point of buying insurance is to be covered if you get sick. If they are forced to cover you for a pre-existing condition, then why not just wait until you get sick, then buy the insurance? I have also had the privilege of PUBLIC "city insurance" that pays my bills on time, has no problem with providing me the medical treatment I need and that includes paying for my prescriptions and without dragging them to court to do so. Thank GOD I live in NEW YORK CITY and have that option, that many people in other states don't have. :)

The motivational structure with private insurance is all wrong. You make a profit exactly to the degree that you take money in and avoid paying it out whenever possible. No system is perfect, and anything can be done poorly, but when you know going in that the switches are set all wrong, that does make a difference.

When the government controls the health care system and they say no your toast, there is no other health care system to go to in the US. The Canada population has the option of going to the US for care when their system has given them the death sentence. Even the present system if your insurance turns you down you can go the doctor and hospital and make a private deal, pay cash over time or ask for charity, to get the care that you want.

The death panel is the "advisory committee panel" found in the bill which will re-allocate funding from the chronically ill, elder and others with what the govt considers have untreatable diseases/conditions. Care will be rationed to the elderly and reallocated to others that the govt as "treatable". Funds are to be limited to individuals will a label of "expendable" based on health care guidelines/regulations, Useless eaters any one. This is how this administration will treat US citizens.

Umm, I live in NYC, and we already socialized our medicine and pharmacies years ago. ALL medical care and medicine is a legal RIGHT. We don't have death panels. On top of that we also have a public insurance option. If anything goes wrong, I call up my elected officials and because it is 100% government owned, they have full sanction authority, and there is no profit. And no, we still have democratic elections ;) Why doesn't the country just copy us, since we already did it right?

Two problems that I see with this point. One, forcing insurance companies to compete for the citizens is pointless if those citizens are unemployed. How can someone buy health insurance if there is no available income? Two, let's say we are to accept the conservative estimate that "only 5 million" Americans are uninsured - and I feel it is really much higher, but still...that's 5 million without health insurance. That's more people than the 2007 census of South Carolina. Is that not a crisis?

Health care isn't the crisis. GOVERNMENT IS! Government created the economic slump by FORCING banks to extend loans to people who couldn't repay. BUSH and OBAMA turned that slump into a full-blown crisis by destroying confidence in our ability to recover, by selling our future to pay for pork and graft. And to clarify, the "stimulus bill" is not TARP. TARP is the program the US government used to purchase "troubled assets" in 2008. And in my opinion, a stupid move that should never have happened. The "stimulus package," depending on which one you are referring to, is actually several acts in one several of which extend unemployment benefits, rescinds taxes on unemployment benefits, and allows more tax credits for education. I don't see how that turns the economic crisis into a "slump."

The answer to "evil insurance companies" is to REDUCE government interference. There are currently over a thousand insurance companies in America, but only a small handfull are allowed in each state. Eliminating that restriction would open up free market competition which would immediately lead to better service and lower prices. Tort reform would reduce the cost of malpractice insurance which would reduce the cost of health care. Unfortunately, democrats won't listen to real solutions.

Think about the doctors who will counsel you as Best Buy, think of healthcare as an electronic device, and finally, think of the advice to terminate early as the warranty plan. The trick is to offer electronics at really low prices that draw customers in so Best Buy can pitch the warranty. Best Buy makes money off the warranty not the product. End of Life counseling is just an opportunity to pitch terminating someones life early.

I have no health care and most likely wont until Medicare kicks in. Have you noticed the people freaking out HAVE health insurance? Those WITH insurance have nothing to worry about! You are not being forced into a government program its a CHOICE.

You can appeal the insurance company. In the Health Care Bill it states, I have READ it, that there is NO appeal process to the committee that determines eligability. I was on painkillers once after a car accident and they made me feel so bad I had to stop taking them. The pain from my injuries was easier to deal with than the side effects of the painkillers. A private doctor is a businessman like anyone else and can take how many patients they choose. How much experience do you have with doctors or are you just repeating stories you've heard? My mom had cancer ins. When she had cancer they paid. She had supplumental ins. They paid. Life ins paid when she died. I have home, car, life and an hmo. Not perfect but not evil.

Well you guys were very lucky. Sorry to hear about your mom. As a matter of fact, I am speaking from experience. I was in a car accident where I suffered spinal fractures. While I was in my halo my lawyer had to look HARD for doctors that would treat me because of the insurance I had. They were worried they wouldnt get paid. In the end we found one but I can tell you I was in no condition for that shit. I was in agony and being declined by doctors did not help.

Basically what ended up happening was my lawyer and I had to constantly be fighting with the insurance company and doctors the entire time I was in my halo. Btw a halo is a ring screwed onto someones head to keeo them from moving their neck. I broke my neck. But yeah I was in extreme pain then I d have to constantly try to find funds cuz insurance wasnt paying. Eventually everything worked out , I got a doctor insurance paid but it was far from easy.
