Refs are supposedly trained to watch for the arms of the receiver to extend. This is what constitutes pass interference. Hyman's arms did not extend, so there should have been no penalty. If they call a pass interference on the receiver, then there should have been illegal contact on the defender before that. That would be a comparable bad call. No objective person who knows football would call this play pass interference on the receiver.
i see why he called it he was at a angle behind the play and he seen the hands come up. the corner couldn't stop and make a play on the ball so from a certain angle it looked like PI but it was a bad call yet it doesn't mean VA Tech would have won the game
Not interference slight contact and no push at all. USC's CB was trying to slow down and his momentum made it look as if there was more contact than there was.
hahha god i hoped USC gets hit with some hard sanctions...... their a discrace to what the meaning of college football is.... WHICH IS TO NOT PAY THE FUCKING PLAYERS!!!
@darksidez81 ha just like u didnt pay reggie bush if that wasnt interference (which it clearly wasnt) it couldve been 17-7 ur probably a bandwagon USC fan

It's a shame too see a late pass interference flag go in there and take back such a beautiful catch. In soccer...it's the equivalent of nullifying a biked goal
I've been a certified football official for 4 years and I have never seen such a horrible call. Pass interference has always been a contreversal call no matter when it is called but on a play like that I don't think a flag should have ever been thrown. It appears from that camera angle that the contact would have been normal for both players attempting to catch the ball. BAD CALL
You could make a case that he pushed off, but not hard enough to interfere with the outcome of the play. He would have caught it regardless.
USC's player kept running, not because he was pushed, but because he couldn't stop in time to break up the catch. Nothing was blatant or obvious. It was still a terrible call.
If the roles were switched and VT was on defense, I bet somehow that would have been P.I on VT too...

Bull shit you bitchy whiners, the officials could never know how much the corner was affected. Just because it LOOKS like hardly anything happened doesn't mean it didn't, for all you know there could have been a lot of force pushing the corner away. The officials made the right call.
It wasn't pass interference but virginia tech fans are actually over this. Yes, we gave USC their best game that year, yes we probably would have won that game if that call had not happened, but in the end it doesn't matter. We lost, they won. The past is the past, and that's where it should stay.
wow your mad over that. Yes i agree with you that it wasn't pass interference but come on he did put his hands on his back and the USC did move away from him a little bit.
LOL! some of you tech fans (not all) are such drama queens!! im reading some of these comments and laughing to myself, worst call in cfb history?? really?? so a bad call in the 3rd quarter cost you the game?? not only the game, but according to the description the national championship?? Too bad USC actually WON the NC that year, while you guys lost your bowl game to a another team SC beat the previous 2 years
That was pass interference, are you blind? See the defender? Watch closely as they show the replay, the defender is wearing a USC jersey which means he will automatically get every call in his favor...duh lol

okay first of all, the year they played texas was the only year since they split the title with lsu, that they had a horrible defense. they've had a dominant defense every other year. texas had a dominant defense and offense. usc just had a dominant offense and still almost won.
2nd. usc got upset on the road, georgia and florida got upset at home. so 1 game won't determine a season, if they run the table from here, they should make the title game.
the only team, that would give USC serious competition is Florida and maybe alabama. USC went to auburn several years back when auburn was #6, and USC shut them out, they've played arkansas and raped them,
USC has proved that they can dominate if they were in the SEC, they would dominate every conference
Good game, great year, we went on to play Auburn in New Orleans. We were a top 10, maybe 5 team that could have won if the momentum wasn't killed by this and another call... but the better team did win.
Lacrosse [4 NCs] Mens Soccer [5 NCs]just to name a few not to mention that UVA leads VT in every sport All time expect football. Baseball[UVA leads 82-74] Mens Basketball[UVA leads 78-49] Womens Basketball[UVA leads 30-8] Football[VT leads 47-37-5] Womens Lacrosse[UVA leads 12-0] Mens Soccer[UVA leads 32-4-1] Womens Soccer[UVA leads 8-0] for the commonwealth Challeng 2005-2006[UVA won 14.5 to 7.5] 2006-2007[UVA won 14 to 8] UVA OWNS VT, yall can have football, but we got the rest:)
Also, if you'll recall the game, which I do fondly in my memory (having watched it live), I don't recall all the picks and fumbles you refer to. It was a pretty turnover free game. As for Virginia Tech being second tier, let's remember that there were only two teams in the ENTIRETY of I-A (or that FBS B.S.) who had 10 wins every year for the last four years, the trannies of troy and the Hokies. So there's no need to down us. I'm sure they're just pissed about being shoddy during the late 90's.
It had nothing to do with the 2nd half. Or Reggie Bush's 2 TD's. It apparently is a concept that USC is unfamiliar with. Momentum. As college football analysts will tell you, it is the most important part of the game. I'm not saying USC still couldn't have pulled it out. They were by far the more talented team. But at least we Hokies don't whine about National Championship games we didn't deserve to be in and call ourselves what we're not. Champions. But judging by this call, neither was USC.
I'm not going to lie. The better team DID win that day. However, people tend to forget 2004 was supposed to be a rebuilding year for Tech. It's not like USC whooped us at our peak or anything. The previous year VT was 8-5 and we had lost a bunch of starters heading into 2004.
This is typical homer fan behavior....VT was OWNED in the 2nd half of this game. 17-3 on the scoreboard, and the SC DL was all over Randall. Give them a TD, and they still lose 24-20...stop whining
Oh my God hokies get over it maybe if you didn't fumble and throw picks you would've won or if anyone could've stopped Bush. You act like this is the worst thing to ever happen to the hokies
Va Tech was not even close to beating SC! They came to the east coast to basically play you at home. You should be way more worried about Reggie Bush roasting you on those two TD's than a ref's call. Va Tech is second teer at SC, LSU (as you found out), and others. What a joke to blame that loss on that one play.
And the Pac-10 is the only conference that plays a true round robin. ACC now gets conference championship games to go alongside the Big 12 and SEC. Big 10 has 11 teams, so they can't do a round-robin and the Big East doesn't have that many teams.
The downside on conference title games is that you beat a team once already...so now you have to play them again? No way, you with college football the way it is, you should only get 1 shot to be your opponent..not 2.
That is a huge call. The commentator is the best, watching passively when they saw it live, then crying foul when the flag came out, then trying to say they couldn't really tell for sure when they saw the obvious miscall on the replay. I think Reggie Bush went nuts after that with a couple scores, but it would have been different if VT got 1st-and-ten at the 12. These teams should play again. Thank God for freak-of-nature Bush, and the money it took to recruit him.
at least get your facts correct. USC didn't give Bush anything. Bush had his own thing going on with an agent, plus as of now, nothing has been proven. I'm sure something took place. what do you expect though? all mojor programs have stuff going on. Didn't Macus Vick get away with everything at Vatech? why did Lsu kick Peraloux of the team?? shit is going on and to only attack SC is plain stupid.
yea they do add that cupcake game, i agree with that, but they (the top two teams) still have to play for a championship game, which can change the loser's chances of going to a bcs bowl, mizzou lost, and ended up out of the bcs, while Kansas got in. and when you said the acc coaches were aggravated when "it" was proposed...what is "it"? a champ. game?
No other conference plays 9 regular season conference games. Instead they just schedule another cupcake. If you don't think its a big deal, look at how the ACC coaches started kicking and screaming when it was proposed for the ACC a few months ago.
Why does USC have to play a championship game?? The pac-10 is the only conference in which all the teams play eachother, a true round robin. I think it's gay when Oklahoma gets smoked by kansas st. in a big 12 champ. game and still makes it to the title game. So what's the point of having a conference title game??!!!
the bcs bowl board (whoever they're called that pick the teams in the bowl) are so high they just pick whoever will bring the most money. that's why kansas got in to the bcs game and not missouri(who demolished kansas at the end of the season to end kansas' pitiful run)
im not saying usc sucks ass im just saying there in a weakass cnference and thats why they go to the rose bowl every year because oregon arizona state ucle oregon state and stnford dont have a fuckin chance at winning the pac 10
You really that dumb? Wow, so teams that finish 11-2 in the Big 12 and SEC are so far superior to SC there's no way USC should be able to compete right?
What about West Virginia? They play in the weakest conference and destroyed the winner of the Big 12 and Beat the SEC winner rather handily a few years ago. They shouldn't be able to compete right?
That wasn't a bad call. The refs could see the hand being used to push the DB better than the replay showed. SC won 24-13 anyways. Very well played game by VT though.
As a former referee. I would have to say this call is conversial. It seems usc kinda bought that call. he acted like he got pushed off. It was clearly not pass interference. I may have seen defensive PI but not offenseive
I remember being at that game. It was all about momentum. Virginia Tech has dominating the pace of the game, and USC needed a big play or call. This call was bogus, whats worse is that the play would have put them around 10 and the next play Tech threw an interception trying to force a long first down.
The refs have to figure these kinds of calls out, it ruined the Superbowl between the Steelers and the Seahawks.
It doesn't really matter if he really pushed off or not, he put himself in the position to have that called on him by putting his hand on the DB's back. WR made a stupid move and opened himself up to have it called, stop crying like a bunch of little babies about it.
Because that was plainly obvious. His knee was down and the Refs didn't do their job and stop the game. They let play continue because they were having replay problems. This is a call in which the refs have a look 3x better than the replay. They were down right next to the action where you could see the push. I trust them in the situation.
Hokies are sauce. They already got the biggest advantage in college football by playin the softest schedule in the softest conference. Love VT, but the football team is overrated every year.
Heh heh Hyman....

2nd. this was not even a touchdown. anything can happen after a long pass. even if they scored. usc is only down 10.
3rd. 2nd half they outscored vt 17-3 anyway
4th. if vt did score, usc would have a chance to come back and score and only be down by 3 just as before the call.
therefore. your claim that usc never would have dominated college football is false. USC has been the best team over the last 5-6 years.

that's why usc became a dynasty right?
viperdawg41192 3 years ago
Also, if you'll recall the game, which I do fondly in my memory (having watched it live), I don't recall all the picks and fumbles you refer to. It was a pretty turnover free game. As for Virginia Tech being second tier, let's remember that there were only two teams in the ENTIRETY of I-A (or that FBS B.S.) who had 10 wins every year for the last four years, the trannies of troy and the Hokies. So there's no need to down us. I'm sure they're just pissed about being shoddy during the late 90's.
grungerebirth 3 years ago
It had nothing to do with the 2nd half. Or Reggie Bush's 2 TD's. It apparently is a concept that USC is unfamiliar with. Momentum. As college football analysts will tell you, it is the most important part of the game. I'm not saying USC still couldn't have pulled it out. They were by far the more talented team. But at least we Hokies don't whine about National Championship games we didn't deserve to be in and call ourselves what we're not. Champions. But judging by this call, neither was USC.
grungerebirth 3 years ago
I'm not going to lie. The better team DID win that day. However, people tend to forget 2004 was supposed to be a rebuilding year for Tech. It's not like USC whooped us at our peak or anything. The previous year VT was 8-5 and we had lost a bunch of starters heading into 2004.
anonymouswaffle 3 years ago
This is typical homer fan behavior....VT was OWNED in the 2nd half of this game. 17-3 on the scoreboard, and the SC DL was all over Randall. Give them a TD, and they still lose 24-20...stop whining
r5brinks 3 years ago
Oh my God hokies get over it maybe if you didn't fumble and throw picks you would've won or if anyone could've stopped Bush. You act like this is the worst thing to ever happen to the hokies
slimpickensusaf 3 years ago
Va Tech was not even close to beating SC! They came to the east coast to basically play you at home. You should be way more worried about Reggie Bush roasting you on those two TD's than a ref's call. Va Tech is second teer at SC, LSU (as you found out), and others. What a joke to blame that loss on that one play.
SquirrelHead79 3 years ago
HELL NO!
burntrubber11 3 years ago
cant live in the past...Va. techs favorite choice of words...."what if...?"
crazydonat30 3 years ago
USC would have won anyways.
ClipCoug 3 years ago
total game of bullshit
VT- 17
USC 7
tech4life88 3 years ago
That is a huge call. The commentator is the best, watching passively when they saw it live, then crying foul when the flag came out, then trying to say they couldn't really tell for sure when they saw the obvious miscall on the replay. I think Reggie Bush went nuts after that with a couple scores, but it would have been different if VT got 1st-and-ten at the 12. These teams should play again. Thank God for freak-of-nature Bush, and the money it took to recruit him.
footballthetime 3 years ago
at least get your facts correct. USC didn't give Bush anything. Bush had his own thing going on with an agent, plus as of now, nothing has been proven. I'm sure something took place. what do you expect though? all mojor programs have stuff going on. Didn't Macus Vick get away with everything at Vatech? why did Lsu kick Peraloux of the team?? shit is going on and to only attack SC is plain stupid.
jaylowdasportsgod 3 years ago
yea they do add that cupcake game, i agree with that, but they (the top two teams) still have to play for a championship game, which can change the loser's chances of going to a bcs bowl, mizzou lost, and ended up out of the bcs, while Kansas got in. and when you said the acc coaches were aggravated when "it" was proposed...what is "it"? a champ. game?
koalabear66 3 years ago
It was a ninth conference game.
You mustn't forget that even if you lose the Big 12 championship game, you can still make it to the title game.
yamofaka 3 years ago
yea, very unlikely since they pick who will bring the most money if its a close competition b/w two teams to get into a bcs game.
koalabear66 3 years ago
usc doesn't even have to play a championship game, that's how gay this whole system is, everyone should have to play a champ. game
koalabear66 3 years ago
No other conference plays 9 regular season conference games. Instead they just schedule another cupcake. If you don't think its a big deal, look at how the ACC coaches started kicking and screaming when it was proposed for the ACC a few months ago.
yamofaka 3 years ago
Why does USC have to play a championship game?? The pac-10 is the only conference in which all the teams play eachother, a true round robin. I think it's gay when Oklahoma gets smoked by kansas st. in a big 12 champ. game and still makes it to the title game. So what's the point of having a conference title game??!!!
jaylowdasportsgod 3 years ago
And when Nebraska played Miami for the national title without even being in the Big XII title game (Colorado beat Texas).
College football needs a playoff.
ClipCoug 3 years ago
the bcs bowl board (whoever they're called that pick the teams in the bowl) are so high they just pick whoever will bring the most money. that's why kansas got in to the bcs game and not missouri(who demolished kansas at the end of the season to end kansas' pitiful run)
koalabear66 3 years ago
why they call that, especially home game. BOOO
The refs are definitely on the favor of USC.
Madsupervilian 3 years ago
im not saying usc sucks ass im just saying there in a weakass cnference and thats why they go to the rose bowl every year because oregon arizona state ucle oregon state and stnford dont have a fuckin chance at winning the pac 10
sddkoyn 3 years ago
Despite my feelings about tech, that was a damn jobbing. Something has to be done about these shitty refs all across the nation.
gohoos924 3 years ago
dude throw usc in the sec theyll go 8 and 4, throw them in the big 12 theyll go 8and 4
sddkoyn 3 years ago
You really that dumb? Wow, so teams that finish 11-2 in the Big 12 and SEC are so far superior to SC there's no way USC should be able to compete right?
What about West Virginia? They play in the weakest conference and destroyed the winner of the Big 12 and Beat the SEC winner rather handily a few years ago. They shouldn't be able to compete right?
yamofaka 3 years ago
they wouldn't have beat missouri, the big 12 was the strongest conference last year
koalabear66 3 years ago
If OU could destroy Mizzou, I'm pretty sure that USC would do the same.
yamofaka 3 years ago
yeah well sc plays a weak ass schedule most the time
sddkoyn 3 years ago
Again, do you know anything about SC football? Have you seen one of their schedules?
yamofaka 3 years ago
Look at VT's schedules. Those are the definition of weak schedules.
yamofaka 3 years ago
it wasnt PI but he put is hands in a position that made him look guilty
tbehmer7 3 years ago
That wasn't a bad call. The refs could see the hand being used to push the DB better than the replay showed. SC won 24-13 anyways. Very well played game by VT though.
yamofaka 3 years ago
he never pushed him

typical pac 10 refs protecting usc
sddkoyn 3 years ago
Have you ever watched a full USC game? There is no kind of protection. Quite the opposite.

those weren't pac 10 refs
stokie510wego 3 years ago
im not sure but i think that #20 had a late hit
stealthymon971 3 years ago
As a former referee. I would have to say this call is conversial. It seems usc kinda bought that call. he acted like he got pushed off. It was clearly not pass interference. I may have seen defensive PI but not offenseive
chemikal201983 3 years ago
One call in the third quarter cannot ruin an entire game.
dudders1992 3 years ago
Nope, you weren't "robbed," even the announcer called it before the ref did!! Only losers make excuses.
proffromgview 3 years ago 3
I remember being at that game. It was all about momentum. Virginia Tech has dominating the pace of the game, and USC needed a big play or call. This call was bogus, whats worse is that the play would have put them around 10 and the next play Tech threw an interception trying to force a long first down.
The refs have to figure these kinds of calls out, it ruined the Superbowl between the Steelers and the Seahawks.
ongreystreet 3 years ago
we're human. we all make mistakes. if u want to be mad about something, be mad about refs not being able to review these kind of calls.
Qboy316 3 years ago
It doesn't really matter if he really pushed off or not, he put himself in the position to have that called on him by putting his hand on the DB's back. WR made a stupid move and opened himself up to have it called, stop crying like a bunch of little babies about it.
matt61387 3 years ago
USc fans still cry about the pitch Vince young made in the rose bowl
tatertots00 3 years ago
Because that was plainly obvious. His knee was down and the Refs didn't do their job and stop the game. They let play continue because they were having replay problems. This is a call in which the refs have a look 3x better than the replay. They were down right next to the action where you could see the push. I trust them in the situation.
yamofaka 3 years ago
Hokies are sauce. They already got the biggest advantage in college football by playin the softest schedule in the softest conference. Love VT, but the football team is overrated every year.
