You can experience synethesia while under the influence of psychedelic drugs. It's quite bizarre. Smelling the blue colors the walls are and hearing the smell of coffee are really some of the strangest things you can experience.
Nothing that you have said here contradicts property dualism or even substance dualism for that matter. You're saying the evidence shows that there's a causal connection between brain states and mental states. Nobody denies this. It's a strawman.
I can smell colours and see sound as patterns! I always assumed that everyone else did it till I met my best friend who took LSD to get the same effect!
Didn't the movie A.I. bring up the idea of memories/consciousness affecting quantum states of matter, and that the genetic information in the preserved locks of hair allowed the future robots to access, essentially, the Akashic Records to bring back the mother's memories?
I believe it was suggesting that consciousness can affect quark spins (or the like) and the pattern of affected quark spins can be thought of as encoded memory patterns. Not that this is useful, but an interesting posit.
i believe consciousness might be a fundamental aspect of reality itself and not just something that arises in the brain. surely you can track emotions, thoughts etc. back to neurological conditions in the brain, but the empty space in which these phenomena arise and are experienced is still not quite understandable... how do you break down the redness of red in scientific terms?
people should read the last chapter of sam harris' book the "end of faith" called "experiments in consciousness"
I actually read an interesting book a while back called SYNESTHESIA: Perspectives from Cognitive Neuroscience which mentions some of his work. My view is that the arrangement of matter causes consciousness, there's nothing special about the molecules in the brain. Its the way that they interact that creates the "special" property, specifically 40 hz
That is a reasonable assessment of the evidence isn't it? Conscience is a biochemical process that can be modified, inhibited or removed by purely physical means,
this is confirmed. So there is no basis in demonstrable reality to assume it is magical in origin.
thalamocortical syncronization of disparate cortical areas via higher order thalamic relays. If this type of interaction was simulated on a computer, it would still generate consciousness. And obviously if there was a mix up of relay signals, this would generate mixed up qualia. There is still the raw experience which is irreducible. How is my view point useful? In the
same way string theory is useful, in understanding the nature of reality. String theory currently has no applications either. It means that if we can't explain our subjective experience with current methods (linear algebra, baysian statics etc..) we might have to start looking in new directions. I think consciousness can be understood, but only as a special property of reality, which will require new techniques for investigating. And when we do understand it, we will truly understand ourselves.
Ok, I misunderstood your position. I thought you were arguing that there was something "special" about the qualities of nuerons in the brain.
So to clarify, you are still arguing that it is physical interaction of nuerons that creates consciousness, but the consciousness it creates has qualities which cannot be tracked back down to individual neurons? In other words, that qualia and the self are phenomenon created by processes which rely apon vast numbers of nuerons and cannot be broken down?
I think its better put to say that you have to take a look at ALL of the philosophy, not just certain parts, or its going to be flawed. You can't ignore empirical philosophy (which science has its roots in) or your outlook will be flawed.
Also, people who do not understand the philosophical backing behind science are also missing out, they tend not to understand why science works and then will lost arguments to people who go by descardes' or kant's principals
discovery channel had a show called superhumans and there was a lady on there who was a synesthesiet or however you say it and when she heard something she could both taste it and see colours and that was really rare apperently

So your view/idea/opinion is that conscience is "mechanically" the result of the molecules interacting in a non-supernatural way?
