i agree the american way to read comics is the better way (not right) but better iam not a big fan of reading manga backwards. Because it is only backwards for Japanese so i dont see why its backwards for english as well apart from the cost for reversing the book. However the american way is the better way.

Some purists don't like the fact the art is mirrored, saying it's not how the artists originally intended it to be. Don't ask me why that even matters.

If they think that's bad, the UK versions of the Scott Pilgrim books have about 10mm cut off the sides of each page for no reason! THAT'S messed up.

You start dealing with continuity errors between media, like "why is he suddenly left handed, he was right handed in the comic" or "hang on, I've been to that place and thats backwards" or "Wasn't your hump on the other side?" also, if you look at it as art, and it was your work, would you want your artwork shown to most of the world in reverse of how you drew it? Beyond all that, you also have to realize, fanboys are crazy...

i draw anime and manga style but i like the american style story line better. except death note which was a great story. manga is more and more drifting toward hentai with the actual insertion. I wish they could focus on the story more than just focus on how much clothes can we not see on the girl characters.

@ShinjiAndrew you can find alot of "hentai" in manga because it's sometimes used as a joke in series, for example naruto. They make alot of jokes concerning nudity, but if you really want to find interesting manga without any mention of hentai then you'll have to look for series that are more for a mature audience.

It's good not to be so narrow minded that you can't enjoy a well written manga, though it seems that most people can't find a balance. It's usually either "manga sux" or "MANGA IS THE BEST!!!". Even though are plenty of good ones, there are plenty of crappy ones. Just look beyond the generic garbage like Naruto (Sorry if that offends anyone) and there are some good reads.

Actually, no. Naruto is technically one of the worst for using the same repetitive shonen story line and and doesn't have that good of art. A series like "Berserk" or "Monster" can be appreciated by a more mature audience and would appeal to fans of western style comic books and manga alike, and they don't include the silly exaggerations(Berserk does at some points, but not too much).

Great episode. I wanted to to just shout out an agreement to your take on the "Gay characters in comics" op ed segment. I too feel that a characters sexuality does not define the character and writers are putting too much emphasis on the alternative lifestyle of homosexual characters. Though it should be addressed in the comics as it's part of the characters mode of operation, it should not be the defining factor of that character.

If you wanna be politically correct on the book directions you should call them by their proper names. The way Americans read is called Western style and the way Japanese and Chinese have it is called Eastern style. Yet the Koreans read the way we do, left to right. Weird huh?
