Thanks, So that means that book sees a string vibrating in the fundamental mode as having one anti-node and no nodes? I wonder if they see the column of air vibrating in a flute the same way.
I checked with the book the students were using (Hewitt) and he did not recognize the ends as nodes, though they certain are recognizable as nodes because there is no movement there. Thank you for making this point.

Why are you not counting the ends of the string as nodes?
