  • i'm angry at the court reporters anyway. why would i want to make sure you get to keep your jobs when you did nothing when i begged for justice?

  • Court reporters aren't allowed to show sympathy for one party or the other... they are the "note takers.'' You can not beg a court reporter for justice. You need to be begging the judge. CR's can't do anything for you, except for taking accurate readings... Good luck with yourself..... try to beg a tape recorder next time, which may inaccurately give you your results.

  • @candie122981 the entire legal justice system is made up of a bunch of jesus whores and court reporters are right there right along with it doing nothing but recording it. fuk off.

  • Great Job, Lorrain and Kevin! Good luck.

  • They'll be so many screw ups!!!

  • Very well said. Keep up the good work!

  • @KingCountyReporters: It sounds like you're not aware that you could have uploaded the transcription file with this video and YouTube would have used automated synchronization to make accurate captions out of your own work. It is now using machine speech recognition for the captions instead of using the work that the court reporter did. Please read up on how to use the automated synchronization of caption files with YouTube videos as this could be a useful new line of work for all of you.

  • This video could have used the transcription of this speech for the caption file. Was that a deliberate decision not to use it in order to show the mistakes that can be made by automated captioning?

  • @dmulvany Yes, since the subject matter of the message has nothing to do with speech-to-text software. The CC can be turned on by a viewer who so chooses.

  • @KingCountyReporters The point was made in the video that court reporters provide access to deaf and hard of hearing people. The closed captions for this video have quite a few mistakes because they're generated by computer. It's kind of ironic that a video complaining about the use of technology replacing court reporters is using automated technology to generate the captions instead of utilizing the human-powered transcription that you see on the video.

  • @dmulvany It's not our video that is using the automated technology, voice recognition software. That's a beta test of a Youtube feature.

  • @dmulvany As a side note, five of the court reporters facing layoff in King County are Certified CART Providers. The reporters in this court were instrumental in helping the court understand that they needed to provide a Certified CART Provider to comply with the ADA, rather than just letting the deaf or hard-of-hearing person read the official record over the realtime court reporter's shoulder.

  • Great presentation of the plight that court reporters face! As a L.A. Official Court Reporter, the justice system will eventually crash when the WRITTEN VERBATIM RECORD ceases to exist or cannot be relied upon. By implementing ER into the courtroom, it will not only be a disaster for the end of the written verbatim record as we know it (i.e., remember the Declaration of Independence?), but is a great setback for those Americans with Disabilities, the hearing impaired, who use our services.

  • Great job. It's difficult to list the benefits of a live court reporter over electronic recording in five minutes or less because it can't be done!

  • wonderful video!!

  • I have a story to share. I am an official in Alameda County in law & motion. We do all writ petitions. The County's public transport'n transit came in on a writ whereby employees were threatening to strike; major news media coverage on this. The day of the hearing the power in the bldg went out in the MIDDLE of argument, pitch-black darkness. (Paraphrasing) JUDGE: Are we still on the record? REPORTER: Yes, your Honor. JUDGE: Continue, counsel.

Tell a video recorder to do that.

  • "Mr. Mall, how fast can I get an ASCII of that?" I EFFIN LOVE IT! I love your presentation -- very concise; smooth; addressed the issues directly from both sides; most importantly, it's the God's honest truth. A recording can't say repeat that. What if someone coughs while counsel is rattling off a citation that's not in his papers? Are they going to remember to ask him at the end of the hearing? Do they stop right then and ask to repeat it? Because it's NOT in his papers, and even if it were..

  • -- ...EVEN if it were in his papers, do you think a $10-an-hour typist is going to look it up? NOT!!!! They're not looking up ANYTHING....hence, all of the "inaudibles"!!

    WE OFFICIALS ROCK!! Irreplaceable!!!

  • Excellent! I am an official reporter in Los Angeles Superior Court, California. We are constantly in battle over this. You did a great job! Good luck!

  • Such a great video! I am a daughter of a King County Court Reporter and I support all of you. Keep up the hard work because it WILL pay off.

  • Well, done, Ms.Kelly. If only the public knew the repercussions of the changes some jurisdictions such as here in King County and also in the State of California will do to our legal system. Such a shame. It's the litigants who will suffer.

  • Well done! Wish you good luck.

    Barbara NFG!

  • Wonderful. This couldn't fail to help your case. Though I'm an Australian court reporter currently living in Hong Kong, I linked this on my Facebook in case any of my American friends want to spread the word.

  • fantastic job of presenting your case. There is hope. My court in Texas changed from ER back to a live court reporter in 2001.

  • The shortsightedness of trying to recreate the wheel but an inferior version of that wheel is mind-boggling. Thank you for stating the situation so clearly and succinctly.

  • Well done. Do the decision makers not read about what's gone on in other parts of the country concerning ER? There is NO SAVINGS in the long term!!

  • Beautifully done! I've posted the link at Depoman.com as well as via my Twitter account. I wish you all well and to the people making the decisions there, I wish swift and complete understanding of just how important you all are to the justice system!

  • An important message! The public needs to know how important a realtime court reporter is to the very fabric of our (legal) society.

  • Absolutely excellent job!

    Lesia Mervin,

NCRA Steno Opportunity Task Force Chair

  • Well done!
