Why is every single comment negative? If you have nothing good to say, don't say anything at all. I, personally love Vai's voice. You can't say about any song that it "lacks soul", because you don't know how the artist felt when he/she played it. You can't know how they feel.
It's hard to beat an original artist's version of anything... being that the song comes from them. But I like this Vai version. He shows amazing restraint on the guitar and lets the song speak. Kudos!
i've been a KINKS fan for over 35 years and while this doesn't touch the original, it is a respectful tribute. and, i've always enjoyed Steve Vai's guitar playing... so take this for what it's worth. GOD SAVE THE KINKS!
This song as well as every other song Vai plays all have one thing in common, they all lack soul. They may be spot-on technically flawless but they just don't have an ounce of true emotion. I don't care how much phase shifter you cram into it.
Steve Vai does a great cover here and so does Joan Jett. What are you all arguing about ? A great song by Ray Davies that has meaning for everyone that has ever dreamed.
to every musician to music listener we are entitled to our own opinions, say someone covered vai , yet they sounded more awesome to us , to others the new player would sound like shit... know what i mean guys?
That's because you're listening to the lyrics. Steve Vai isn't a singer, he's a guitar player. All the emotion you could want is in the guitar parts...
ray can still play well on guitar in any tuning, and in any key signature and is always note perfect. he chose not to be a widdler, no diss to steve vai , but to be a song writer composer and lyricist, and rather good at it dont you think?
@kinvara1933able I agree with you about Rays style, and genious as a songwriter,a great sense of humor and i love the Kinks. However He did not "choose to be a widdler"? Ray -bless him does not have the musical knowlege,or the chops of Vai.Vai is a BerkleeSchool grad. and is able to play ANYTHING you throw at him in the Western octave/note/tonal structure. For gods sake he played with Zappa at 21 yrs old! He is a master! And so is Ray-- they each have their strong points.Via is tippin his cap here
I love this song deeply, but I think this song is not much for Vai. It's Too much sentimental for him, no matter how he plays well... ( I have no objection about him as a great artist. )
What are people moaning about? When IS a cover version better than the original (i.e. what you've heard first and what you're most familiar with)? Are people saying therefore that all covers should be banned?! I think if you're dong something slightly different, it's worth it. This for instance had black chics ad libbing at the end, which the original didn't, and I quite liked that actually! Also, I'd never heard Steve Vai sing before. so I was curious (and pleasantly surprised). So - thanks!

Steve Vai is clearly a better guitarist than either Ray or Dave Davies, but I think the Kinks' version is far better. Most Kinks songs are taken from Ray's own life, and for that reason it seems like he is the only one who can really sing them in the way they were intended to be sung. That said, this version isn't bad, I just like the Kinks much better. Joan Jett also has a great version as well.
Just my opinion, but i think this arrangement ruins the song. All the charm of the song lies in the humble vocals of Ray Davies, and the subtle playing of the band. The music is beautiful in itself, i don't need all these superfluous addition (vocal effects and additions, added drumming, added instrumentation).

It is complete BS that a cover can't be better than the original. This is better than the original as Vai is easily better than any of the Davies.

I always imagined someone using this sort of instrumentation and arrangement when I first heard the Kinks' version. He did a nice job!

I agree with you, I prefer this version of the song.

Yeah, Steve sang it. He said he was never really happy with his voice, but he did a good job on this.
