  • plane has arrived and my HD camera man has withdrawn so I am going to use my iphone today to cover building the plane stage of fpv flight.

  • @Shorn1571 I have been flying gov for 3 years. You say the AMA will cancel my membership for life? Do you ready think every one lives in the US? Even if I lived there, I'd be over joyed the had banned me. FPV is the best way to fly RC. Keep flying like a dinosaur in LOS

  • Little rain and your video will be dead. It's dangerous toy, not an FPV plane!

  • So.. where is part 2? or are they not labelled as part 2?

  • Looking forward to the instructions for building the 5.8GHz transmitter.

  • Great video. I love your cheap video goggles!! great idea!

  • I am just starting to get into FPV and finding information is like asking what's your favorite movie. Everyone has a different opinion. Thanks for putting this all in 1 place! I need to watch this 5-10 times. Please continue on with the other parts!

  • I like the helmet and how it doubles as a face protector, good work, lol

  • Americans are scared s***less by the security fears. One terrorist act and the fear is that all aeromodelling will be banned.

  • Can you do channel vs frequency measurement for HK 900MHz 1500mW transmitter?

  • please don't bail on this series of videos, i really need them

  • thanks for your work and i love the videos

  • can you use a Darth Vader mask as a FPV helmet?

  • Thank you for a fantastic introduction to fpv. Looking forward to the next editions!!

  • gopro is a HD camera and you can downlink it!

  • why didnt he mention that the HEAVY gold case from the 900mhz tx can be taken off?¿

and why did he say your whole vision is taken up when using fatsharks?

fatsharks dont do this! a mediocre quality little square screen in the background all surrounded by BLACKNESS is what takes up all your vision! and they have less technology than a ps3 handset imo.

  • I have a Sky Surfer I think they are just about the same as the AXN Floater!? have you had a chance to look at the Sky Surfer? I need to set it up as ez as I can at a low cost, so if you keep teaching I will keep watching you videos. Thank You, have a great day!

  • Thank You, I like every video you have put out. I'm a Disabled VET. and cost is my enemy! I'm in the VA hospital and I some times get a signal so I can see your videos and I follow your videos every time I can! I look for them to keep me from going nuts in here! I can't wait to get out of hear to start putting a set up on a airplane! but for now you keep me going! I think I have seen just about all your Videos! so from a old Soldier thank you! I can under stand you and follow what u are saying!

  • Very very good video for introducing FPV flight with materials !

  • I also look forward to this build as its exactly what i want to do. the AXN with FPV

    Good work Bruce !

  • Thanks Bruce! Now that's what I am talkin 'bout :)

  • Bruce

Great idea for a video series.

In your review of vid glasses will you evaluate how easy they are to use with eyeglasses? I am about your age and like many others I need glasses full time and I cannot focus close. I believe I read in some reviews of vid glasses that there are optics you can put in for correction, but they only work for near sighted people. I am far sighted. Also I think these can't be used with the eyeglasses on. Your welder setup may be the answer. Thanks for the vids

  • @gwxyzzy Yes, as someone who wears glasses myself, the compatibility with corrective eyewear is an issue I intend to address. It's also another reason I created the Video Visor, since it allows you to wear your existing eyewear -- albeit with some compromise.

  • @RCModelReviews

+1... need reading glasses for anything closer than 50cm! It's become a real pain. I caught site of ;-) a news feature that this can now be corrected with surgery. All I need now is a lot of money!

  • Hey everyone, dont get caught. FPV is against AMA policies. If they find out you are flying FPV, they will cancel your membership for life.

  • @sborn1571 Remember that the AMA, like all national bodies, is there to represent its members. If you don't like what they're doing, you can vote out the present officers and vote in people who are more representative of your own perspectives. Did you watch the videos posted to YT by the AMA this week?

  • @RCModelReviews I did see the AMA videos. I am in the aerial photography business myself. I know under AMA policies, it is PROHIBITED to fly with a "direct line of sight of your aircraft". The use of a FPV constitutes a cease and desist from the AMA.

  • @sborn1571 I assume you meant "*without* a direct line of sight to your aircraft". The same rules apply here -- and the line of sight must be without the use of a telescope/binoculars. Around here you're also supposed to have someone spotting for you. These are commonsense rules but there must also be room for exemptions when other provisions have been made to ensure safety. I suspect some kind of "FPV wings" certification would be in order to gain such exemption.

  • @RCModelReviews You say "but there must also be room for exemptions when other provisions have been made to ensure safety." It looks as though you are making your own "excemptions". Listen, I do not make the policies set forth by the AMA, I just follow them. Under AMA guidlines, the pilot is NOT allowed to fly FPV.

  • @sborn1571 Yeah, just stick to your lovely AMA rules, and miss the most exciting experience in RC modeling.

  • @sborn1571 Someone trying to protect their business perhaps. Well that horse has well and truly bolted. I don't see prohibited in any of these documents.

"AMA has provided specific guidelines for FPV activity for its members. These guidelines and related safety considerations can be found in the AMA Safety Code and in AMA document #550, “First Person View (FPV) Operations.”

Anyway why would anyone outside the USA or AMA give a flying ....

Great Video Bruce, look forward to the rest.

    Cheers

  • @sborn1571 You might get several hundred meters of signal with 5.8GHz radio, even a km, but not even 100 meters if you don't have line of sight. You need direct line of sight to your aircraft to maintain radio contact. 900 MHz would be more tolerant to obstacles, but you will be getting a much better picture if you do have direct line of sight.

  • @sborn1571 I was about to post something but then I realized it was going to be a bit insulting. A great bunch of us don't even live in the US and in my opinion, the AMA is pointless. Just use common sense, and stick to your own rules.

  • Thanks for the video Bruce, have been waiting for your review on the Dominators for ages! cant wait to see what you think so I can finally pull the trigger and buy some! Cheers mate

  • Looking forward to the next FPV video, Thanks Bruce

  • Great video just like all the others. I am sure looking forward to your upcoming videos on FPV as well. Watched lots of your other videos already and liked them as well. Keep up the good work. Oh sure love your flying field you have over there. Not much here where I live but we get by when the wind isn't blowing.

  • hi bruce if i may call you that . i watch all of your videos i am also a sub to your channel and i have been wating for this for a long time .. i have really learned a lot from you, i fly helis and i have a frsky mod in my futaba and i do use cheep Chinese servos also, i am however sorry i have not donated i know you won't stop me but i find it hard to make myself do it .keep up the good work rocket man!!

  • Old Guys Rule - This is fantastic, especially since I'm a visual learner and a cheap skate. You dah Man!!

  • Hey Bruce, great video! I was wondering if you plan on including anything about recording your fpv? Like which DVR is the best for the price and so on...

    Thanks

  • really looking forward on how you make your TX and RX. I have always wanted to build my own. Using the chinese 5.8ghz 200mw I have flown out 8.1km using a cloverleaf and a 8 turn helical. Range can still be had as the receivers are great little things.

  • Hey somewhere on youtube there is a tutorial how to use gopro HD as fpv, where they use the output from the gopro as for viewing the flight, and while it record HD at the same time. That could be a better solution that having 2 different cameras on the airplane

  • @anariaq The video from the gopro out is not very clear. It struggles to pick up light so i can be hard to use. Like the cheap hobbyking board camera. People use another camera as they often produce better in lowlight condition.

  • @jwr38 Ah ok thanks, have no expertise in how the gopro work, thought it was a good Idea. But with that type of limitation, I can understand that it is not a good solution.

  • @jwr38

If you want a fluid image out of Gopro put the latest firmware (in order to have live output without any other trick) and set it up to 1280x720 (60p or 50p). The bad part is that the overall image is too dark (but I don't have good video goggles) for FPV and you can't have proper exposure of the ground when you have the sky and the land in your frame. Now I have a Pixim Seawolf camera whose WDR feature is the best when flying into the sun (both sky and land are well exposed).

  • @anariaq That is an option some people use and it reportedly works quite well. Unfortunately I don't have a GoPro but I hear from FatShark that they'll be offering an HD recording/FPV camera pretty soon that does what the GoPro does -- but maybe better. Stay tuned!

  • @RCModelReviews Thanks. Though as jwr38 said, gopro dos not work that well in low light. So I guess it is not recommended to use for FPV use. And hope FatShark dos a good job on there HD equipment. Can not wait to see how it turns out.

  • @anariaq

As a matter of fact GoPro2 works really well in low light, just search for GoPro2 video samples. I think the darkness of live output has something to do with the video levels.

  • @anariaq thats on the "RCTestFlight" channel....works with any camera that has video out.

  • @catamaranman333 many thanks, could not remember where I saw it.

  • Great job Bruce keep going,i am just getting in to FPV and realy use your info, very helpful, keep it comming please. Thanks man.

  • What's the point having an email address on your website when it seems you choose to ignore emails altogether? You might as well not have an email address if you don't want to get contacted!

  • Another really great video. I am looking forward to learning FPV with you

  • It's about time!!! (kidding)

Thanks for the post. I'm really looking forward to the "more money than I know what to do with" version, though.

  • Excellent as always!

  • Would you recommend the hobbyking fpv starter pack which comes with fatshark gogs and tx and rx and a camera would that be good

  • @rcflyerAds The Fatsharks are good gogs but I'm not so impressed with their 5.8GHz video link. Wait until you see the FatShark Dominator review before you decide.

  • I tried earlier to post a comment but I got the Error message.

  • Nice one Bruce as i bet a good few of us have been waiting for these videos to come mate ;-) i look forward to the other videos in this series = thumbs up.

  • Thanks for the info , I will watch the next one.

  • Perfect timing Bruce. I'm looking at what to buy as a starter FPV package. Will be very interested in the Dominator 5.8 system review, as its top of my list at the moment. Although so far signal quality from what i have seen is very poor.

  • lol its only been how many years and they finally payed u off

also love the USA shirt on a kiwi

cant wait for the next vid boss

  • Just what I need! will be building a low budget one once you have completed the series - Thank you!

  • Im looking forward to this series! keep it up :)

  • more, more, more, - this is what i have patiently (most of the time) waiting for so long

  • Great video as always Bruce. You really know how to touch on the right subjects. Fpv is the craze now-a-days. I have had some successful flights. The cloverleaf changed everything for me..although I have a skew planer wheel on my vrx (4 leafed clover so to speak)...

  • thanks bruce! looks like your bad weather has educated me in fpv! ive just built my own plane for FPV but dont have money for electronics yet so may be awhile before it flys but well see! thanks again for the info it always helps even if im not using it on a current project makes for good discussion at the flying field!

  • Hey Bruce, where have you been all of these years. I have been waiting and have Waiting to learn about FPV for a long time and the good thing about learn with you is you explain things in detail. I am surprised that you do not have your own company by now. Please keep the knowledge coming and you do not have a chip on your shoulder as far as sharing things, I thank you mr Rc review.

  • purchased a helicopter to fly a ipod nano into the air to collect video but the flying skill needed to get off the ground and put the coper through next door cloths line. new blade at 13% the purchase price and we are flight ready again. now it is time to look at what you are educating on. rod

  • marry me

  • Where to start. Great work Bruce. Exactly why I was drawn to your videos in the first place. Clear, easily understood explanations with Pros and Cons. I have seen the 'cloverleaf aerial' videos elsewhere but was a little unclear on how this all went together. Looking forward to the rest in this series so I can look at my own FPV project. You are also proving the point I am constantly banging on about, These things don't actually cost that much to make!

  • hahhaaa - I laughed my head off when you said the welding helmet doubles as protection from your model. Probably another advantage when you are learning FPV...

  • Bruce LOVE your little transmitter. I can't wait to make one of those, I can't wait to use it on a small model!! You're a champ buddy. I think another donation is in order :) THANK YOU

  • Oh yes, this is definitely interesting. I have the same 5.8ghz kit and I'm waiting for custom made "fan" and "windmill" antennas for the Rx and Tx to get a reliable signal. There's a ton of multipathing near the buildings here, makes the stock antennas almost useless. Very soon I'll make my first fpv flight on a rather expensive quadcopter. I won't lie, I'm a bit nervous!

  • Would you recommend the hobbyking fpv starter kit which comes with fat shark gogs and a 5.8ghz tx and rx and a camera. Is that good?

  • @rcflyerAds In my tests, the FatShark 5.8GHz system was not a good performer when compared to other options. The FatShark transmitter is only 100mW and the sensitivity of the receiver was rather low -- which means far less range than you really want. You might want to wait for my review of the FatShark Dominator with built-in 5.8GHz before deciding.

  • @RCModelReviews How about the 600mW transmitter they've got on hobbyking? you should check it out :)

  • @MrKrilars1 We've had two of those 600mW transmitters here and they both performed very poorly - one was sent back for a credit -- it was that bad. Maybe it was a bad batch but I won't be wasting money on buying any more to test. The 500mW 5.8GHz transmitter with a fan that can be seen around the place is a much better option but doesn't work with the FatShark receiver.

  • you should do more advanced stuff theres already so many vids out there for beginners

  • @pinzgauernorcal Don't worry, there's plenty of advanced stuff coming but it makes sense to start with the easy stuff. I'll be showing how to integrate the FY31AP for "return to launch" and how to create an 8-way diversity switch that will allow you to create a ring of 7 low-cost patch antennas and a cloverleaf to *really* boost your FPV video range without compromise and without using a powerful video transmitter.

  • @RCModelReviews yeah i think that the thing everyone wants to know about fpv is how to dramatically increase the range without having to pay much. will you have any videos about boosting the output power? i've seen 7W boosters but im not really sure how they work.

  • @Fonzzzzzii Boosting the power has a cost -- the transmitters become (lots) more expensive, battery life is reduced and there's more risk of upsetting someone with your signal. I prefer to use better antennas and other methods to extend range. I'll cover all the options though.

  • I do have one question. I fly this same plane and im having trouble getting it very high in the air. What ay be the issue. Im useing Spekgtrum dx6i dsmx and a 6210 full range reciever. Help

  • @IbnAir23 What exactly is the problem? Lack of power? Lack of RC range? If it's a lack of power, check that you have the propeller on the correct way around -- the slight point on the tips should be pointing away from the direction of rotation.

  • @RCModelReviews Im useing a 30 amp esc and a 2200 mah 3 cell 30 c battery. wth the sock motor. yes the prop is on right and the rotation is correct also.

  • @IbnAir23 So is the model just not climbing due to lack of power or what?

  • @RCModelReviews That what Im trying to figure out what the best esc and battery I should use with it to get enough power to achieve the maximum height my spektrum transmitter and reciever will give me. Any recomendations with the power setup would be very helpful? I am using the spektrum dx6i (DSMX) tx and a 6210 rx.(DSMX)

  • @IbnAir23 Your setup sounds fine -- so long as your ESC has a 3A BEC your RC gear will work okay and the maximum altitude will be limited by your eyesight -- unless you're flying FPV in which case it'll be either your video link or your RC rage that imposes the limit. Some folks have had bad luck with DSM2 when used for FPV because it doesn't adapt to the changing noise profile you'll find at extreme range and altitude.

  • OUTSTANDING video Bruce!! I've been waiting for this series for about a year :)

  • I've been looking forward to this video series for a while. I picked up an AXN based on your review and my daughter and I are loving it. I'm excited for the remaining videos as I intend on making one of these FPV settups for our flights. I maybe just pick up a couple of cheap welders helmets in anticipation :)

Thanks for all of your videos!

  • Jokes aside, its great to see the FPV series off and running. Look forward to your circuit board demos and the rest of the series. Thanks Bruce!

(Now, back to grovelling to the gods for some decent weather!)

  • I dare you to fly fpv on the axn with the camera facing backwards.

    I...Dare...You.

O course, fly safe and make sure to follow club rules and have Ron filming and Barry standing by with a plastic bag and hugs... five minutes before the crash. ;-)

  • nevermind the axn, get your velcroed brokeback, ops, bareback system on the pulse jet behind u. u could also tape on the one legged doll , but be carefull that her hair doesnt get in the reed valves

  • Yesterday it was pretty damn sunny, and then today wouldn't you know it crappy weather again, and here I was thinking that we might actually sustain a sunny time in SUMMER! They say it's always raining somewhere in New Zealand, but not the ENTIRE country for the best of 2 weeks or so, aah well.

  • After hearing about guys chopping half their ear off flying FPV, your welding helmet is actually a very sensible idea...rig up the darth voicebox and it gets even better :-)

  • I like the way you mounted that cheap old hobbyking camera. They are a real pain to mount nicely. Nice compact solution there!

  • yeah this is great i have been waiting for this, thanks bruce

  • Hello, I heard there is also an easy mod for a gopro where you can use an extra av cord to connect it to your video transmitter. Also it still records while using this cord so you end up with HD video to your goggles or tv on the ground! I think you should try it out!

  • @javamochacocoa I believe it only outputs standard-def video. The current video transmitters won't handle a true HD signal.

  • Very informative, great work as always.

  • awesome.

  • YAY! I've been waiting for this series!

  • Love the idea of this series im about to get into fpv on a ardupilot hex copter

  • @heyhey1385 The bareback system is designed to just velcro on to any model (fixed wing or multicopter). It's a very small, lightweight system so you can us it on an AXN or small quad with ease and swap it over in seconds. Of course you could also put it on an RC boat or car too.

  • YES! I've been waiting for this! Keep em coming...thanks so much!

  • I really appreciate ALL your hard work in RC Model Review! I learn so much

But there is no way would I be seen with the welders mask! LOL

  • @jahatton Yeah, when I wear it, I'm waiting for kids called "Luke" to come up and ask me if I'm their father :-) Mind you, with some airbrushing it could look kind of cool.

  • @RCModelReviews Actually I would be hoping for princess Lea to come

    with R2D2.

  • Awesome, been waiting for something l! :)
