I'd love to be the one videotaping this so I could show it @ the rental car place & see their faces! :) I've had a rental car before, and mine was really great - they get regular inspections on-time (which is more than I can say for some peoples' cars I know), & if you get a third-party mechanic to check it out before you buy, then you're set! Also, they're usually cheaper than used ones @ dealerships b/c of the "rental car" stigma, and I'm definitely OK with that! :)

Replace those gaskets with the revised metal gaskets and you're golden. I've had far less issues (actually, I've had close to none) with the 3100s in my 99 and 03 Malibus than my father has had with his '00 Buick Park Ave. with the 3800. Great little motors, great little cars.. especially for the price.

i have a 2001 malibu. those things are fucking beast. amazing burnouts for front wheel drive, power slides. i love my car. and just having a 3.1 is pretty good. plus that car is fun to race in when stupid fucks try to race you and they think malibus are slow. think again.

Chevy never equipped the Malibu with the 3800 V6, this generation had the 3100, though they upped the horsepower in 1999, the next-gen had the high-value 3.5L V6 from the Pontiac G6

the 3100 was a widely used chevy engine used in many GM's while the 3800 was only used in larger cars like the boneville, grand prix, and most buicks as it was originally a buick built engine. It is completely different from the 3100 and 3400 V6's.
