Atheist here. I searched "God" and this seemed ineteresting. I have a question only christians can respond: what concrete benefits does being christian brings? I mean, working, studying, being in peace, are means to happiness, wich is the finality of life, according to Aristotle. But most of the christians I know are unhappy. Why? Are they good or bad christians? I've been an atheist since i'm 15. I'm 22 now. I remember i was very afraid of God and i wasn't happy. Now i'm a very happy atheist.
@huevosteve being christian doesnt mean our lvies are easy by any means, it means we believe there is a god out there that payed for our sins and we want a relationship wth him in our lives. We believe he's our savior and that he has a plan for us and he'll be there through the good and the bad. Many christians can be bad people but as long as they admit to there bad doings god will accept it and be back in their lives. That's why god is so rightous.
@Scottishmunk Well, you really didn't answered my questions. Let me rephrase: why most christians are unhappy? Specially the most devout ones. I know some "schools" or sects of christianism believe people has to suffer in order to achieve redemption. This is a grand flaw in any religion, because, who wants to suffer? One of the reasons i have don't believe in God is that I believe religion has made a lot of damage to humanity, in small and large scale, and has cause tremendous unhappiness.
@huevosteve most christians being unhappy has nothing to do with their religon. Most is everyday life but they probably torun to the lines "it always gets worse before it gets better". Christianity at no point says people have to suffer in order to reach redemption, christianity is al about accepting christ into your heart and having a relationship with him. It doesn't matter how open you are with your faith as long as you have a relationship with him and you can ask him to take away your sins.
@huevosteve Many Christians are unhappy because they forget the third person of the "Trinity" which is a word which Christians use to represent 3 persons with one spirit. The members are, in order, The Father, The Son (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit was given to us by Jesus when he left to be with the father, but many Christians forget about the Holy Spirit who is our peace, patience, love, etc. Without the Holy Spirit a Christian is left feeling empty and hopeless.
@huevosteve I'd like to respond to your questions from a view of someone who has been Atheist in the past, but turned Christian. Firstly, the concrete benefits of being a Christian are very simple, you believe in a God who loves you, does not judge you and has the power to work in any circumstance in your life no matter how horrible, this can incredible release from stress and worry knowing that He is above the problems of your life and knowing that you are never alone in all of lifes struggles.
@huevosteve Onto the subject of Christian happiness, you must bear in mind that despite Christians believing in God in such a way, it is definitely not easy to remember God is above all when someone you love is dying of the incurable or great tragedies, wars and massacres plague our century as if they were supposed to be commonplace. All of us can sympathise with feelings of hopelessness. I think you may be just unfortunate enough to have met Christians who are unhappy to be honest!
@huevosteve One of the main reasons for conversion to Christianity, interestingly enough, at the age of 15, was because of the optimism and strength found in Christians I knew, my parents for instance are so optimistic sometimes it's annoying but I know why they are. I for one have become much happier since becoming a Christian, although I've had some veeeery bad days where I've felt like rejecting God all out.
@huevosteve Lastly, I don't think there is such a thing as 'good or bad' Christians, people who think there are often your typical 'you're a sinner and going to hell' type Christian who looks down the nose at both believers and non-believers for the stuff they've done wrong, and they are very rarely happy in themselves. There are Christians who have stronger faith than others though but that is impossible to measure from a persons outward appearance, that is between them and God.
My dad had a heart attack a few days ago. The doctors have been saying he is probably not gonna make it and if he does he will not be the same as he was before. So I've been losing a lot of hope, because everything is not looking good, and I've been praying non stop. I've known this song for a long time, and I heard this song on Pandora earlier today and it helped me a lot. And has brought back my hope, because there is nothing God can't do!!!

Answered prayer is proof. Pray to the living God, Jesus Christ, God Incarnate, The Son of God. Confess every sin you've committed in life to Him, and you will be forgiven. Pray that the Holy Spirit will show you who the one and only God truly is and He will. Believe that you are born a sinner, and can never ever be perfect like God, and believe that the only hope you have in life to avoid absolute self-destruction is by trusting in God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
@mistarax What you are saying is that if I start believing in your religion, I will then receive emotional confirmation that those beliefs are right. Is there any way I might be able to see the truth of your beliefs without assuming them true as an axiom? @noforbiddenquestions If you look at Adam and Eve from the beginning he gave people a choice. He asked them not to touch the tree, they still did. He gave them a choice. Often I find the proof most people want (not necessarily you) is for God to come out and tell them. If he did they would be forced to admit, there would be no free will. How do you know that the Christian god answers your prayers? Have you ever tried praying for something that would never happen spontaneously -- like for someone's amputated limb to grow back? If a god actually answered prayers, I would consider that pretty compelling evidence for belief ... but the statistics aren't there.

I have talked to speakers who have risen a dead dude that died three day earlier through the power of Jesus Christ. I have seen paralized people walk after being spiritually healed. Surprise surprise, the Bible says that the Bible is true. That's true of every book out there, especially religious ones. How do you choose which one to trust?
What do you do when archaeology turns up zero evidence that an exodus of Jews from Egypt ever happened? What about the contradictory stories about Jesus? Do you trust Paul or the Gospels?

If you think Bible stories all line up perfectly, and were not edited at all by the people who selected and compiled them into the book we have today, you are as ignorant about the history of your faith as you are about science.

Incidentally, I have read the Bible. Including that part where Lot's daughters get him drunk and rape him so they can get pregnant. And the times God commands genocides, and the parts where it says women aren't permitted to speak. Have you read the Bible? Or just had bits of it read to you?

Answered prayer is proof. Pray to the living God, Jesus Christ, God Incarnate, The Son of God. Confess every sin you've committed in life to Him, and you will be forgiven. Pray that the Holy Spirit will show you who the one and only God truly is and He will. Believe that you are born a sinner, and can never ever be perfect like God, and believe that the only hope you have in life to avoid absolute self-destruction is by trusting in God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

@mistarax What you are saying is that if I start believing in your religion, I will then receive emotional confirmation that those beliefs are right. Is there any way I might be able to see the truth of your beliefs without assuming them true as an axiom? This just isn't how I go about deciding what is true, and it isn't an approach anyone seems to endorse in any context other than religion.

@noforbiddenquestions If you look at Adam and Eve from the beginning he gave people a choice. He asked them not to touch the tree, they still did. He gave them a choice. Often I find the proof most people want (not necessarily you) is for God to come out and tell them. If he did they would be forced to admit, there would be no free will. God chooses to let us have a choice. I don't know if that helps?

What makes you think that your god did anything at all? You say "he did something that no other god could do" -- how do you know he did it, and how do you know no other postulated god could have?

How do you know that the Christian god answers your prayers? Have you ever tried praying for something that would never happen spontaneously -- like for someone's amputated limb to grow back? If a god actually answered prayers, I would consider that pretty compelling evidence for belief ... but the statistics aren't there.

I have talked to speakers who have risen a dead dude that died three day earlier through the power of Jesus Christ. I have seen paralized people walk after being spiritually healed. @Barnyardstudio If this is really something people are able to achieve through prayer, the medical community would be astounded and thrilled. Yet somehow no one has heard of it...? I am aware of *one* peer-reviewed study from *1988* claiming that there was a positive effect of intercessory prayer on coronary care unit patients, but this study has been widely criticized as pretty flawed. Please forgive me if I don't take your heard-from-a-guy-who-said story as convincing on its own...
