  • Will this lovely little machine have a wasted spark system then? I assume so but do not know for sure.

  • Purring like a kitten!!! And no smoke..... Very nice!!!

  • Make it do work!

  • Put a muffler on it then I will like it more.

    This IS a hit-n-miss engine.

The gov. just locks out the ignition though because the bushings in a Maytag must have the oil that is in the fuel.

This engine wastes more fuel than it burns.

Run a Maytag twin next to it.

Mufflers on both of them please.

My single will run out of fuel ever two hours on the button.

The twin I run next to it will run TEN hours on a tank of the same fuel.

I have a couple of each.

  • Don't run this in da hood, otherwise brothers will be trying to rap to da beat...lmao

  • I like that purring sound of the Maytag, and that it is a 2 stroke engine

  • my dad has one his doesnt run but we are trying to get it to work

  • Whats a small engine!

Never see such a small hit and miss engine :)

  • thats about as hit and miss as my lister d.

  • power ?

  • Where these models fitted on some washing machines?

  • Yes, they were originally used to power washing machines. Maytag also had a two cylinder version.

These really aren't hit n miss engines though.

  • Someone needs to use a 2x4 and pry against the flywheel, so folks can see how it works under a load.

  • @fishkiller41 How about hooking it back up to a

WASHER?! Everybody has the engines but NOBODY

    HAS THE WASHER!

  • @4freespeech clothes aren't made that durable nowadays

  • Purrs like a cat. Lovely.

  • Great piece oh history!!

  • This is the nicest Maytag engine that I've ever seen - good job!

  • hey beautiful engine u got there....i have one myself....who overhauled it?...was it hard to do?

  • Comment removed

  • Put that engine on a go cart! ...

  • well your lucky i wish i had one or at lest was able to see one

  • ive seen 1 of these on a mower.

  • werent these used for washing machines?

  • whats your oil ratio? im mixing 16:1 and as you can see on my vids im getting a lot of smoke.

  • how mauch

  • Nice Engine! Too bad some people don't have a clue. I'd like to see a washing machine doing it's thing on here!

  • there is one

  • nice engine m8, but this is not a hit'n miss though. Sounds and looks like a 2 stroke, but a good and clean example.

  • Its a hit and miss

  • It sounds like a hit and miss to me. but there is some constant mechanical sound too which I assume is some rattling of the flywheel?

  • actually its the piston reciprocating and the pop happens every forth reciprocation hence the power stroke

  • It varies, it has a magnet in the flywheel that catches the points and holds them , but when it slows down, it drops them and causes the plug to fire. If you put it under a load it will fire each time.

  • oh, btw was this engine used on lawn mowers also

  • Thats not a hit and miss...it's a 2 stroke running like shit

  • lazzer408 youre are not a smart person... you're a dumbass talking like shit, that is a hit and miss engine

  • Where's the valves?

  • listen to the engine run... putt putt putt putt boom putt putt putt putt boom putt putt... there are two principal types of governor regardless of fuel type or number of cycles, some engines are either hit and miss or throttle governed, now if this engine is not a hit and miss or governor controlled, it would have over rev and it will blow up

  • Every hit and miss engine I've seen are 4 strokes with the exhaust valve held open until the rpm slows. The hit-miss intake valve is held shut with a weak spring and with the exhaust open there is no vacuum in the cylinder to open it and no fuel is wasted. They could have governed the ignition system to control rpm but that would waste fuel as well. Is the engine in the video 'governed' by the ignition system?.....

  • ....If so, fuel would just keep pumping thru the engine and out the exhaust. Doesn't seem like a smart idea to me. I don't see any valves so it must be a 2 stroke right? So how are they controlling it?

  • There is a spring tensioned governor on the inside of the flywheel, next to the coil, and contact points that cause the engine to not fire until the governor lets the points make contact, the spark plug fires, and you get that nice put put sound that is the the maytag's signature feel. and yes I have one.

  • So it keeps on pumping air/fuel thru the engine and out the exhaust right?

  • yup

  • That is a wonderful description but these are hit and miss engines....i have two of them..my grandpa used to restore them...i probably helped him restore 50 of them and he probably restored 500 or more.

  • If it aint a true hit and miss, show me how a true one looks and sound.

I am interested in old motors and want to learn!

  • thats not a true hit and miss engine

  • and your not a true genius!!

  • If it aint a true hit and miss, show me how a true one looks and sound.

I am interested in old motors and want to learn!

  • Imagine the efficiency these engines would have, even waaaaay back then :)

  • very interesting!!!!

  • ya it is conrail

u can see the idle fluctuates if it was constant rpm it wouldnt be

  • that is not a hitt n miss

  • If it aint a true hit and miss, show me how a true one looks and sound.

I am interested in old motors and want to learn!

  • why do they call it a hit and miss?

  • The term "hit and miss" comes from the sound the engine makes when running at idle. The sound is most like an engine that is barely running: missing on several strokes and then hitting (firing) on one. Hitting just enough to keep turning.

  • ic, makes sense now.

  • Let's load it up till it is continuously firing!

  • Very nice indeed, when was this original made?

  • Very Nice! Actually runs pretty smooth for a H & M!
