I just borrowed my fathers banjo. Always wanted to try it, but was intimidated. I saw your youtube video on how to tune it, and found all your lessons. It's been only a week, and I've almost completed "Cripple Creek"! I just need to speed it up and develope that catchy beat. I can't tell you how enjoyable it is to have you as my personal instructor...anytime I want! We live in the mountains of North Carolina...so, "when in Rome".
It is amazing how patience pays off. Just repeating the lessons until you can perform them without hardly thinking about it, and what seemed difficult or almost impossible a few days ago becomes second nature to a certain extent.
What I'd like to know is, is it typical for the tips of one's fingers to get sore, i.e. the fingers that press the strings down on the frets. My fingers are sore, but is that due to inexperience, because I'm a beginner, or is my open back banjo not very good in quality? Thanks.
@ABWEndon Your fingers are sore because they are pressing down skinny steel wires, and sliding up and down across them. We have to put up with the pain for awhile. If you keep practicing, you will eventually experience a pleasant numbness of your fingertips, and a callous. I play all day, and my fingers aren't sore anymore. Expect that for 3 or 4 weeks, or months if you don't practice much.
You have to make sure that you put enough pressure on the note, and keep the pressure up as you slide. If you lift your finger off, it will dull the note.
Hi, when you are sliding up/down, how do you make it change the note? Mine just sounds kind of.. Dull when I slide up/down.
It's a brand new banjo, HBJ-25. Got it this morning and would really like to learn a song within two weeks. You're a great teacher by the way, thanks.
I'm twenty years old, just bought a banjo because I really enjoy it in the band Mumford and Sons. Your videos are really helping me enjoy the instrument right from the get go. Thanks a lot.
I have a question, I can see you are using a thumb pick. Are you also using picks for your middle and index fingers?

Just bought my first banjo and the book i was using wasn't fun at all, your lessons so far are producing music and in a simple way. Thank you, keep up the good work. I'm off to practice.
Woo hoo, i am now playing cripple creek up to speed after 3 weeks, still needs tidying up a bit but it gets easier everytime! Foggy mountain next, my favourite:-) Thanks again.
Rob Thanks for posting these wonderful lessons. Just got started on them tonight after watching them all yesterday. Great to see how the tune comes together. I am a raw novice.and this type of instruction is fantastic....Thanks again
Love the sound of the banjo Rob. I just learned some of the guitar part of Dueling Banjo's. I was lucky to have a new neighbor move nearby who teaches guitar.. I found a live teacher who can answer questions so your not grabbing your mouse to backup and restart is really nice... I still use the "Tube" to watch people like you and others who share their time and teach for free. Not many players of your caliber teach for free. I like to watch your solo's once in awhile too..
cant afford a banjo :(
but ive tuned up an old guitar the same and its working alright :)

@robbourassaguitarist
Thanks very much for that Rob :-)
At least I can carry on doing the tutorial (which by the way is most excellent), knowing that eventually my fingers will get tougher.
I appreciated the help and your time in teaching us to play the banjo. Hope the new year brings you many blessings! :-)

Hi Rob. Thanks for the vids. At what speed is your metronome set? I'd like to match it for practice without the clip.

@matahking Yes, I use a Dunlop medium pick on my thumb, and two dunlop nickel picks on my fingers.

I've started teaching myself the banjo 3 days ago. This is by far the best video I've come across.
Everything is paced, broken down, detailed and well explained.
Keep up the great work!

why don't you set up a pay pal account so we can at least pay you if we want to. I would be happy to pay for professional lessons like these.

I have a Paypal account and I do charge for my private Skype lessons with the web cam, but these are free.
Something in this world should still be for free. I try to do my part.

Hi Rob, I have been enjoying your lessons. You are a great teacher.
It could take me a few days as you mentioned in an earlier video.
Thanks Al
