I think this is cool. An easily accepted adaptation of this might be making a folder containing all the icons rather than a pile of icons. The quick view of folder icons on the desktop could be very cool though - sort of like Apple's implementation of "stacks", but not limited to the dock.
So because people are lazy and won't clean or organize their desks. You (the ones behind the idea) think it's a good idea to bring all that clutter to computers. Tbh this is really dumb. Would be fun playing around with it though.
When I see the tremendous disorganized and confusing mess on my desk and in my den, I often wished I could replicate that mess on my computer's desktop. Now I can!!!
WAY TOO USELESS. People just wanna create stuff but better to win money which is stupid. I mean this is useless. Just use a normal desktop and there. It is just and interacting thing, and this would be very expensive, and when you have it you would be like, why did i bought this? it is totally useless!
2 questions: Can it manipulate folders with files in them as well as files themselves? And this seems like something that can be implemented in Microsoft Surface and the iPhone. Can/Will Microsoft and Apple use this program in their devices? This could be made more realistic and fun using a hands-on device like Surface or iPhone.
This looks cool, but seems a little excessive. I think this would end up being a lot more complicated, when you can just organize files within folders how you want them.
Some of you people are idiots how would a system that allows the user complete freedom on document organization and structure be useless. Maybe if your a complete lazy idiot who wants all the work done for you so you can spend hours clicking through folders or trying to use a search program that plain outright sucks.
This would allow people to organize information in the best possible way to suit them. Idiots
You're right with that although, as a Mac user, I have to say that Spotlight and Quicksilver can replace the browsing process entirely (As long as one has a general idea of the name of the files).
I assume that the next big step in browsing will be content aware search, by which I mean a search process that doesn't specifically scan for file names but for aspects of their content (Colours in a photo, melodies in a music file etc.).
looks kind of cool, but is useless, it's fun to move around in that way but it doesn't organizes files very well... if you want real organization, it has to be automatic and not done by yourself
you know, in all my years of using computers I never once though, "If my file system was 3D i'd be much more productive"
I'd just have to look around even more to figure out where the hell I put stuff.
A search box is about 100x more useful than '3d file navigation system'. That's just a gay ass gimic that nobody will ever really use productively. Just to show off and to fap to while screaming out, "YESS STEVE JOBS I LOVE YOU"
So... you're basically taking people's messy, unorganized desktop methods onto an interface that offers nothing really new? It's cute, but unfortunately offers nothing really interesting or innovative. Find a way for people to properly organize their files without the mess and without headaches, and you'll have something that can actually sell!
@groovdafied You're joking right? Lookup bumptop. It might shock you. Sure the interface is in it's pre-alpha phase but it's the desktop of the future.
@groovdafied this would be a good option to have if integrated with the current systems to help organize folders and desktops. the current systems have not been changed or updated in a while
*couch* stacks *couch* cover flow *couch* osx Thanks, I have a cold ;)
Okay it looks good, really good user interface, and as long as it wasn't made BY windows, it's good. When will it be available on OSX or where can I get it for windows?
this is insanely cool! "Not practical" my ASS, this thing would totally work. like anything, it would take a little time toget used to, but that's so cool! I've always wanted to use a 3d desktop! nice job!
This is awesome. I don't care what people say about "not practical" or "wouldn't use it". Bull! It's amazing. Plus, it's just a prototype, so it's not supposed to be perfect or complete - these are great ideas, though. Absolutely amazing.
But where did he get his pronunciation of "lasso"? It's a singular O, so it's "LASS-oh", not "las-SUE". Strange.
Nice concept! I don't see this particular form spreading around, but there's certainly a great overall idea there! it was about time for someone to show up and start working on the concept of 3d OS interfaces - And les agree that putting windows on a cube is not 3d OS! I'd like to know more about the project...
its awesome!. I mean now your desktop, instead of being lame and have only one use, is now a playground, a tool, something to do when you're bored and you have a download in progress...
Whos crazy idea was this?! I dont want a mess on my screen. Its enough trouble just doing what I need to do quickly when everything is organized. Why would anyone want piles?
Why simulate the "reality" when today's organizing is superior? I'd love (or not) to see that desktop with a couple of thousands of files. My file manager handles it just fine.
why would you go back to such an old method of dealing with files. the computer-filesystem we are using now is the revolution from the "pile on desk" system... otherwise we would just print all our document and do a pile on a real desk! ffs
Note that this is not a final release or anything. It's just a simulation to give you an idea of what future desktop environments may be like, to make the experience more "human". I'm sure icon previews, file names, other UI features etc. will be added if it gets implemented, this is just a rough framework that I think is really promising. By then Folders, or at least one-level folders (no idea how they're going to do nested ones) will be outdated because piles offer so much more functionality.
I can see this has been well thought out, but I think its old thinking, no offence. I don't know exactly how 3D will work but its got to be something completely different.
You can't quickly recognize an icon if it's rotated or disoriented. Or find an upside down photo- why the forced disorganization? But I like the grouping features- could be a nice way to auto-create a folder for the files.
They have a lot of inner logic that can be better displayed and arranged with a further dimension. This is not the case with the desktop - actually, you can work without the desktop...
I don't think this is needed... Makes stuff to messy. But if they are going to put this in windows and apple then I hope you can choose between grid and freemove thingy... And that we can have folders on that desktop too... I don't really like the pile idea... But if I could pile folders, then I would be happy =3
right click , new folder , drag the stupid files inside that is a tidy pile ...
please fresh ideas .
nothing new exept the playing with the mouse more than just "right clik refresh rectangle , right clik refresh rectangle , right clik refresh rectangle , right clik refresh rectangle , right clik refresh rectangle , right clik refresh rectangle , right clik refresh rectangle , right clik refresh rectangle ..."
One problem. You can't read the file name. Say you have five mp3's on your desktop, how would you know which one's which? They have the same icon. Major flaw.
Not a bad thing, but...... you play with it for a few hours and then uninstall it. I tried it a few months ago and that was funny. But not really usefull. It's just for fun, put files really into the trash, to have the files which can collides etc... but boring and it has still some bugs because of explorer.exe. It would be better if it was able to work without explorer, so the start menu would not come sometimes in front of the desk^^
I think this should be a document basement, so you have a OS X like gui for apps, but when you want to browse files and folders, you head downstairs into a 3d environment, much like the transition from OS X to FrontRow or TimeMachine.
i think this would only sell to kids as more of a realistic training game for working in the corporate world, but then again, this is more like an ATTEMPT at science fiction than actual use in the office
ok its possible its easier to use with tablet pc's and stylus/pen(ever tried to double click with a pen?) but most of it could be integrated in 2d view which is actually better for interaction with a mouse and the pile making is a type of making folders. But exept for fast(erish) arrange its not really practical of course if your job isnt arranging files all day.(or youre bored at work and play phys sims) Altough its a very good research project to try to push the ways we interact with computers
Seems familiar to me also. But it to lack a major concept: metadata. No filenames, creation/modification dates, file sizes, types, permissions, and so forth. These are data that would otherwise be displayed in list views.
How is having a cluttered desktop a good thing? If software in the future is designed to make our lives even more disorganized, that's not a good thing. Considering the huge amount of data people have to deal with, clutter is bad. Graphically, this looks nice. But the concept is flawed. The future is in haptics and natural speech recognition. Apple's iPhone shows just how successful touch can be for computer navigation.
it looks really cool and sounds really cool, but i like the idea of perfect organization on my pc, why would i want to be unorginized on a computer....its like were going backwards
its a great looking interface...be great if it was touch based rather than mouse base....also, incorporating multi touch....
I noticed a lot of people being really defensive about thoer windows machines...surely the point is you shouldn't have to "know how to look after" you pc in order for it to run well. It should run well without the user (usually non tech people) having to perform maintenece and other tasks to keep out virus etc...just my $0,02
this is totally useless. the whole point of designing computer interfaces is to do away with the clutter and disorganization that we struggle with when dealing with physical objects, not replicate it.

i think thats a good idea, i hope they make it for xp, vista and osx. but i dont know how much would be resonable to charge...

i think this would only sell to kids as more of a realistic training game for working in the corporate world, but then again, this is more like an ATTEMPT at science fiction than actual use in the office

ok its possible its easier to use with tablet pc's and stylus/pen(ever tried to double click with a pen?) but most of it could be integrated in 2d view which is actually better for interaction with a mouse and the pile making is a type of making folders. But exept for fast(erish) arrange its not really practical of course if your job isnt arranging files all day.(or youre bored at work and play phys sims) Altough its a very good research project to try to push the ways we interact with computers

yeah.. cool.. but where are the file names?

its just right for slobs. didn't we see this from apple quite a few years back at a developer's conference? i seem to remember this...

Seems familiar to me also. But it to lack a major concept: metadata. No filenames, creation/modification dates, file sizes, types, permissions, and so forth. These are data that would otherwise be displayed in list views.

cool!

And how is that helping me? I mean, it's not practical...not helping...it's an innovation just at graphics and interaction....but not practical.

Do you really think so? I totally disagree... there are many ways to work around for many different kinds of people.
I'm one of the kind who does find this practical...

If this was operated on MultiTouch instead of Graphics tablet, it would be PERFECT =D

it looks really cool and sounds really cool, but i like the idea of perfect organization on my pc, why would i want to be unorginized on a computer....its like were going backwards

very cool,
im guessing this will be on a tablet laptop or
only when transitioning from the desktop to the dock viewing.

...so basically, "we explore how to take out everything that made your computer more organized than the pile of crap on your desk."
yeah, that's a good idea...

its a great looking interface...be great if it was touch based rather than mouse base....also, incorporating multi touch....
I noticed a lot of people being really defensive about thoer windows machines...surely the point is you shouldn't have to "know how to look after" you pc in order for it to run well. It should run well without the user (usually non tech people) having to perform maintenece and other tasks to keep out virus etc...just my $0,02
bleuner 4 years ago
this is totally useless. the whole point of designing computer interfaces is to do away with the clutter and disorganization that we struggle with when dealing with physical objects, not replicate it.
ambrettemont 4 years ago 2
Exactly!I have it and it's completely useless.
nedaminod 4 years ago
Seconded. How does having a messy desktop with documents which 'bounce off' each other help?
aribenzane 4 years ago
Didnt they say that computers would lead to the paper free desk?
Well that never happened, and i think that this is bridging the gap between the real desk and the computerized desk.
You wouldn't have ti have this all the time, it could be a sub environment for file handling. Its a great idea and i hope it catches on.
