It does say karate, but sometimes Americans refer to tang soo do and tae kwon do as Korean karate or merely karate as a lot of lay people have never heard of TKD or TSD.

Do the judges take off points if you fail to completely break the bricks or boards?

In this event, which is power breaking, it is the number of bricks or boards broken which counts in scoring. In creative breaking, it is the combination of power, correct technique, completion of breaks and creativity of the breaker which counts.
