@rrgert4 If you want a distro that doesn't need much memory I believe you might want to look into Xubuntu. It should use significantly less than Ubuntu and Fedora. Supposedly it runs on as little as 128MB of RAM.
@k2kraze good :D cause i had this crappy pc that had only like 300mb.. was thinking about puppy linux or damn small linux :D but they were really really low
i tried mint and had problems. my opinion is the best is which one you feel meets your needs. i'll be sticking to ubuntu. but mint and fedora is nice too.
@emewify I would recommend Ubuntu to a new user, because so many packages are readily available. My mom was really confused with Ubuntu and GNOME3 however, because of their different look from Windows.
@tommycarstensen True, any new desktop environment takes some getting used to. Did she stick to it? If so how does she like it after using it for awhile?
@joe4ska She didn't like Ubuntu, so I switched to F15 unaware of the GNOME3 upgrade. She has gotten used to GNOME3 by now. It's not difficult to operate, when you only run one application at a time (web browser or card games). I still have a machine running Fedora14, and I think I'll switch to Xubuntu or Kubuntu myself, when the maintenance of F14 ends. I really really don't like GNOME3, as you might have guessed :-)
@tommycarstensen Same here Gnome3 is nice at first until you want to change it's appearance. I primarily use XFCE as it's very close to GNOME2. I'm currently running ArchLinux and I understand that there is a Gnome2 fork available. Have you considered Lubuntu? (for laptops) or Sabayon (gentoo based)
if you actually take the time to learn a bit of code and understand how to call packages, arch linux is pretty much the shit. it starts up with nothing, you get nothing more than you need. although ubuntu is pretty good, but i advise 10.10 or below cuz the new ones are starting to get buggy and are unstable
Ubuntu is good but too much work to install the apps you really need. fedora is cool too. My Choice is Linux Mint.
Best for Windows and Mac Migrants, everything works out of the box, like mp3, flash videos, interface is the most user friendly. Linux Mint crushes these too. You can say Linux Mint is a remix to Ubuntu.
@dgvenomdesigns I have had problems with nearly every linux distro. Ubuntu was the best, I just had a shitty bootup screen and my system tray looked like vomit. But at least all the other software just worked on it.
PCLinuxOS couldn't install office, Mint flash, gave me white screen (always had problems with flash/nvidia video card), puppy is pretty good but a little too complicated, Fedora 15 with gnome 3 is aalright but slow and installing software is slow. I need a rolling release distro
..that's stable, has the latest versions of software that are mostly stable and just works. I tried Debian stable and it hard crashed on me..wtf, that has ironically been the least stable distro eva for me ! I am using debian testing, and now I can't use wine/playonlinux to open my files from the file manager. Always so many problems with Linux. I thought Linux was supposed to be so much better than winblows...no frickin way !
..seems to be one continuous train wreck, you get everything working then a software update stuffs something up that you need, over and over again this happens. And you constantly have to compromise like with compiz effects and flash video. I just want it to work, to not have to think all the time just to use it. Sure it's faster than Windows 7 especially in booting times and no antivirus but that's about it.
Debian is really much more stable then Ubuntu. And I've found that Fadora isn't bad and is pretty stable. Ubuntu changes things way too much and has gone too far away from it's Debian roots even though it's a Debian based Linux. Ubuntu is also slower then Debian in many respects.
fedora 14 . . was give me the best performance , however hard i tried , its satisfied me . . . ubuntu also give best service , however im prefer to fedora . . .
I dare say Ubuntu is way better that fedora! Fedora does not have what it takes to work for office/work. Ubuntu is an excellent way to get started in Linux, and has some great looks there! A truly superior operating system compared to any others. Ubuntu FTW :)
I gave Ubuntu a fair shot, I really did. It is a noob toy, plain and simple. If your new to linux, and want to play with it. Ubuntu is the best choice. Specifically, it's helpful that flash and video support is there at install. If you truly want to learn to utilize the power and security of linux start with Fedora.
hi, i want install Linux in my Thinkpad, but I don't know if install Ubuntu or Fedora, can somebody help me? please, thanks. =) between Ubuntu and Fedora what is better?
@jgarale Well, I installed Ubuntu because was the first choice that came to my mind when my Windows got fu***d up. But do a little research about both (and other) distributions and chose the one that you think is the best one for you. There's a plenty of flavors in the world of Linux.
BTW, if you decide to install Ubuntu: Always, ALWAYS install the LTS versions. Never EVER the beta ones.
flash player doesn't really play nice on fedora.. at least as far as i've seen, unfortunately flash IS still used everywhere and as a result we still have to support it as web users. html5 please take the wheel!
There are very few things that I can't do with Linux. I've been using it almost exclusively since 2007. I still boot into Windows to sync my iPhone with iTunes periodically and to use Turbotax once per year, but that is about all I need Windows for. Linux is faster, rock stable, and smart. I don't have to spend all day acknowledging update dialogs from 20 different programs or finding device drivers when I add a new device or install a new distro.
I'm surprised no has mentioned the upstreams. I like the Fedora -> CentOS -> RHEL path. Rather than ubuntu -> debian -> ?? I love all open source, but run Fedora because all of my servers are CentOS or RHEL.
i dont see a point you are trying to make with this video. they are different distros with different values. for instance fedora suits me much better than ubuntu
What turned me off about Fedora is the SLOW installation of packages, Ubuntu's dpkg with APT kicks RPM's butt, also Arch Linux's Pacman has exelent speed =D
@MasterBot300 I'm an Ubuntu user, but I know most of Autodesk 3D software ,and movie software is made for Fedora first before other Linux distributions. Companies like Pixar, and DreamWorks Animation both use Fedora 64bit . Maya 3D is made for Fedora , and RedHat . However Houdini 3D is used in movie making and is made for Ubuntu, Debian , RHEL, and Fedora
P.S. Google this "Autodesk Collaborates With DreamWorks and Imageworks on Mudbox for Linux "
@maw88ify Never hear about those programs xD but why the release is first on fedora is because fedora is used more by company and ubuntu for normal user.. but if a software works in one linux distribution should work on others. do you hear about blender it may work for you and its on ubuntu repositories...
@MasterBot300 Autodesk software is the worlds biggest 3D company all Playstation , X-Box , and Nintendo games are made with Autodesk software. Almost every movie that has any 3D animation most-likely was made with Autodesk software , or Houdini 3D . None of that software is open , or free, and all of them cost between $ 6,000 up to $ 10,000 u.s. dollars each .
As nice as Blender is for being free it's not as good as Mudbox , Maya3D , or Houdini 3D.
They're both good distros for free. Ubuntu is easier to use. Fedora is suppose to be bleeding edge, funny thing is I don't see any blood hitting the ground. I work with highend animation software and there isn't a single distribution that has a gui coupled with driver support that can run it without a great deal of issues. Maya, Softimage. In house developers always have to develop drivers to get accelerated graphics to behave on par with Windows and Macs. Want to impress me, get solid drivers.
I am the user of UBUNTU 10.10, actually i need a os which give me nice look, great security as well as performance which I get in Ubuntu 10.10. Fedora is very secured os. but it looks not very well. so I think comparing two distro Ubuntu is little bit better than fedora.
Fedora is vastly superior in many respects. Comparing the two is like comparing a Ferrari to a Honda. Fedora is a glimpse at the future of Linux. Ubuntu is what the kids who typically don't understand linux run.
@philkgray The main reason people use Ubuntu is because it has a software center, and to tell you the truth I'm not sure why all distribution don't have software center.
@maw88ify What exactly are you talking about? Fedora, default install. "System -> Administration -> Add / Remove Software" - do you need everything presented to you like the Android Market, or do you just want to get crap done?
@dtchky I want to be able to tell what the software looks like before I download , and if it is crap or not before I waist my time installing it. The Add / Remove is sloppy work at best, and was poorly made, and out dated. The reason Linux has been stuck at 1.5% of the market is because of people think like you ... A clean looking software center help me "get crap done" because easily find the software I need faster ...
The way you can tell that you have won a fight on youtube is if the only come back the person your talking is learn to spell , check your grammar , or take an English courses. People only say stuff like this when they have nothing better to say, and they know the person is correct. Every one knows that... So come back when you have something intelligent... That is not grammar , English, or spelling related...
@maw88ify Learning the language you're communicating in is an essential part of expressing ideas. The sole purpose of having ideas is to express some form of them or their offspring; Because of this, if you wish to properly express your views, right or wrong, you should first learn the language you wish to express them in, I'd prefer to express my ideas in Japanese, though right now that's not optimal because I haven't attained a reasonable amount of fluency, thus I will stick with English.
@197022007 Stop spamming this page with comment about language. If you have anything intelligent to say about Linux do so , and if not shut the hell up. Your comment is basically spam because it has nothing to do with this video . I know a TROLL when I see one and you are Troll. So go back to watching Japanese porn , and let use big boys talk about Linux. You can come back when you grow up.
Just becouse are more ubuntu users is necessary to be best or worse distro. If a newbie have a ubuntu distro and before that used Windows will say is the best Linux distro, that becouse he doing same thing like in Windows...just clicking.Just clicking even in llinux the brain wil be limited like when use Windows.
@philkgray i guess so but not with speedif you care about having programs ubuntu is the best i have 2 virtual machiens 1 fedora 1 ubuntu i almost never use fedora they look almost the same, and the same speed but there are a lot more .deb files out there
@philkgray Fedora may not be as pretty as ubuntu as default. It can be prettier than ubuntu if you care so much about the appearance of your operating system. Not to mention that Ubuntu and those too-much-user-friendly distributions are creating a new generation of dumb and lazy users.
@lolineko Ah you know man I have a place in my heart for standard Slackware but I dont see anything wrong with User Friendly. It's what has held Linux back from Windows and Mac for so long, their finally now Catching on, hell even BSD is getting the message. People that want to be nazi geeks will always be nazi geeks no matter how EZ mode the OS is. Someone will make something too hard for average dip shits to use. Its like complaining about sour milk while taking a shit.
@lolineko Ubuntu is a great Linux to start with when switching from Windows because it's user friendly and simple. MOST people on this planet don't wanna spend hours and hours on Linux forums just to find out how to do basics in their system or install the drivers.. Ubuntu also breaks stereotypes that say Linux is difficult ,user unfriendly and stressful which makes people turn to Windows and Mac and the filthy rich CEOs of Microsoft and Apple only get richer.Genius lies in simplicity
i've been an ubuntu user for a little over a year now, but i switched to fedora a few days ago and i gotta say:
rpm sucks
fedora is slow as molasses especially at installing rpms..
fedora needs a better package installer. synaptic >>>
and even though i don't really like the direction ubuntu is going in as far as the new mac-style theme, it's better than fedora's default gnome theme that has gotten old and stale over the years.
otherwise, fedora's not all that bad really.. ubuntu's just better
@sleepee11 actually rpm wins in terms of speed over naptic , also fedora is more cutting edge than ubu and you ll have newer software. Unity doesnt look like Mac?!
idk, installing rpms on fedora seem pretty slow for me... i'll admit i'm running fedora on a pretty old desktop, but i went from ubuntu to debian to fedora and i noticed a pretty significant slowdown in installing packages after i switched to fedora...
maybe it's b/c my computer is so old? idk.. but it's slow..
and idk about you, but moving the close, minimize, maximize buttons to the left, using the global menu, the new color scheme... it looks more mac-ish to to me.. just sayin
btw, as far as overall speed when just using fedora, i actually find it a little faster than ubuntu... it's just installing packages where fedora is really slow..
I used to a ubuntu 10 lts x64 and for how praised it is,i was totally disappointed,a specialy with speed reaction. And i'm not agree with statement (from other ubuntu users) "ubuntu is for biginers/newbie" becouse a newbie/biginer will not be able to handle even a Windwos OS.(IMO)
it's not just about selinux and using the most cutting edge stuff... the overall user experience counts for a lot. that's why people love macs and iphones so much. they're not necessarily the most advanced stuff, but the user experience is really good, so people buy it.
i don't get that with fedora. not that fedora is a bad distro. it has its benefits, but it just focuses on things that don't make it as pleasant to use as ubuntu.
@sleepee11 Fedora is a general purpose system — it does not concentrate on one specific market. It is suitable both for home users, programmers and the corporate server. Unlike with Ubuntu, Proprietary software is not included in the repo's and must be added. I think most people who install fedora know they will have to roll their sleeves up at some point given it's bleeding edge nature - same with Arch Linux etc. For desktop simplicity maybe Ubuntu is better but thats not what everyone wants.
some errors happened on ubuntu before 4 days, i cannot start xwindow. i don't know why, so i replace with fedora. fedora is beautiful but i don't like fonts of fedora. it is so rough.
Fedora is really good GNU/Linux distro - only good way for me. Ubuntu after 8.04 Hardy Heron is neverending beta. Ubuntu have zylion of unstable things, Fedora is designed to be usefull, designed for normal Linux users (not ex-Windows or current Windows users like Ubuntu). Ubuntu is concentraded on nice system look, Fedora not. I've used Ubuntu 3 years - today Ubuntu is not this same Ubuntu. Ubuntu is for newbie in Linux, Fedora is like Windows - normal system to everything.
LOL at this guy thinking he's some sort of advanced Linux user for making this video comparing the gui of some random desktop apps... Ubuntu brought all this n00bs to the Linux world and now, we all got to deal with them. Facepalm!
No blood, avatars blowing apart, chain lightning jumping? This is no death match. =P Good video. Both nice distros but the first thing that pops in my head are things like "no warning" on the weak password on ubuntu or did I just miss it? Or the confirmation on root access to install libraries etc. Whats the biggest thing that plagues windows? Its not lack of security. Its lack of well implemented existing security.
No doubt, but I think what drove me off from Fedora was the updater. If it is installing them and there are missing libraries it just stops, where as Ubuntu is much more intuitive and skips them or suggests the libraries required and installs them automatically . I guess I could always change the sudoer file, but it is such a tedious task. I understand the reasoning behind this though. Just sometimes that is just overkill with this security or safety concept.
@CARPioJPV Bingo. I used Ubuntu when I first started using Linux and the first time I used Fedora I tossed Ubuntu out. Too few actually features and programs in Ubuntu as compared to Fedora.
Great to have a choice!! Ubuntu is sleeker, easier to use, Fedora is always a little more cutting edge under the bonnet....but I like them both, One thing Fedora does not really have is a long term stable release version...well it does sort of, thats Redhat ;)... I am starting to have separate partitions for /home so I can just do new installations rather than upgrades, that way a new install each 6 months is a breeze....whichever one I have or both
Personally I got no bad vibes with Fedora, but I like the way Ubuntu handles administrative privileges with sudo command. I don't like having to login into the administrative user to do administrative tasks.
If you are getting away from MS products it means that you are either brave/stubourn enough to learn a whole new OS, what is the point of letting everything be decided for you? Get control of your PC, learn it ways and then have your way with it, and that is the beauty of Fedora 100% FLOSS
When Ubuntu is running on Raspberry Pi SBC - a credit card PC for £21.60 ?

They're both good distros for free. Ubuntu is easier to use. Fedora is suppose to be bleeding edge, funny thing is I don't see any blood hitting the ground. I work with highend animation software and there isn't a single distribution that has a gui coupled with driver support that can run it without a great deal of issues. Maya, Softimage. In house developers always have to develop drivers to get accelerated graphics to behave on par with Windows and Macs. Want to impress me, get solid drivers.

WTF, what are you trying to prove? lol
obviously fedora kick ubuntu's ass...
Ubuntu is just a distro for newbie user, like windows users.

I am the user of UBUNTU 10.10, actually i need a os which give me nice look, great security as well as performance which I get in Ubuntu 10.10. Fedora is very secured os. but it looks not very well. so I think comparing two distro Ubuntu is little bit better than fedora.
MrSwamoy 1 year ago
Fedora is vastly superior in many respects. Comparing the two is like comparing a Ferrari to a Honda. Fedora is a glimpse at the future of Linux. Ubuntu is what the kids who typically don't understand linux run.

im never going back to Ubuntu. I believe Fedora pwns, and its crazy why its not so popular.
philkgray 1 year ago 2
@philkgray The main reason people use Ubuntu is because it has a software center, and to tell you the truth I'm not sure why all distribution don't have software center.
maw88ify 10 months ago
@maw88ify What exactly are you talking about? Fedora, default install. "System -> Administration -> Add / Remove Software" - do you need everything presented to you like the Android Market, or do you just want to get crap done?
dtchky 9 months ago
@dtchky I want to be able to tell what the software looks like before I download , and if it is crap or not before I waist my time installing it. The Add / Remove is sloppy work at best, and was poorly made, and out dated. The reason Linux has been stuck at 1.5% of the market is because of people think like you ... A clean looking software center help me "get crap done" because easily find the software I need faster ...

Stay in school. Take some English courses, then you can construct coherent sentences.
durrrrrrrrrrrrr 9 months ago
@durrrrrrrrrrrrr WOW an English slam ...
The way you can tell that you have won a fight on youtube is if the only come back the person your talking is learn to spell , check your grammar , or take an English courses. People only say stuff like this when they have nothing better to say, and they know the person is correct. Every one knows that... So come back when you have something intelligent... That is not grammar , English, or spelling related...
maw88ify 9 months ago
@maw88ify Learning the language you're communicating in is an essential part of expressing ideas. The sole purpose of having ideas is to express some form of them or their offspring; Because of this, if you wish to properly express your views, right or wrong, you should first learn the language you wish to express them in, I'd prefer to express my ideas in Japanese, though right now that's not optimal because I haven't attained a reasonable amount of fluency, thus I will stick with English.
197022007 9 months ago
@197022007 Stop spamming this page with comment about language. If you have anything intelligent to say about Linux do so , and if not shut the hell up. Your comment is basically spam because it has nothing to do with this video . I know a TROLL when I see one and you are Troll. So go back to watching Japanese porn , and let use big boys talk about Linux. You can come back when you grow up.
Good day sir .

jfb112697 9 months ago
@philkgray Fedora may not be as pretty as ubuntu as default. It can be prettier than ubuntu if you care so much about the appearance of your operating system. Not to mention that Ubuntu and those too-much-user-friendly distributions are creating a new generation of dumb and lazy users.
lolineko 6 months ago 9
@lolineko Ah you know man I have a place in my heart for standard Slackware but I dont see anything wrong with User Friendly. It's what has held Linux back from Windows and Mac for so long, their finally now Catching on, hell even BSD is getting the message. People that want to be nazi geeks will always be nazi geeks no matter how EZ mode the OS is. Someone will make something too hard for average dip shits to use. Its like complaining about sour milk while taking a shit.
Faelsun 4 months ago
@lolineko Ubuntu is a great Linux to start with when switching from Windows because it's user friendly and simple. MOST people on this planet don't wanna spend hours and hours on Linux forums just to find out how to do basics in their system or install the drivers.. Ubuntu also breaks stereotypes that say Linux is difficult ,user unfriendly and stressful which makes people turn to Windows and Mac and the filthy rich CEOs of Microsoft and Apple only get richer.Genius lies in simplicity
UnforgivableMen 1 week ago 2
@philkgray YOu can theme both so 'pretty' is fairly moot.
ShadowEater120880 6 months ago
i've been an ubuntu user for a little over a year now, but i switched to fedora a few days ago and i gotta say:
rpm sucks
fedora is slow as molasses especially at installing rpms..
fedora needs a better package installer. synaptic >>>
and even though i don't really like the direction ubuntu is going in as far as the new mac-style theme, it's better than fedora's default gnome theme that has gotten old and stale over the years.
otherwise, fedora's not all that bad really.. ubuntu's just better
sleepee11 1 year ago
@sleepee11 actually rpm wins in terms of speed over naptic , also fedora is more cutting edge than ubu and you ll have newer software. Unity doesnt look like Mac?!
xPhreakx 1 year ago
@xPhreakx
idk, installing rpms on fedora seem pretty slow for me... i'll admit i'm running fedora on a pretty old desktop, but i went from ubuntu to debian to fedora and i noticed a pretty significant slowdown in installing packages after i switched to fedora...
maybe it's b/c my computer is so old? idk.. but it's slow..
and idk about you, but moving the close, minimize, maximize buttons to the left, using the global menu, the new color scheme... it looks more mac-ish to to me.. just sayin
sleepee11 1 year ago
@sleepee11
btw, as far as overall speed when just using fedora, i actually find it a little faster than ubuntu... it's just installing packages where fedora is really slow..

@DeadliftXI
it's not just about selinux and using the most cutting edge stuff... the overall user experience counts for a lot. that's why people love macs and iphones so much. they're not necessarily the most advanced stuff, but the user experience is really good, so people buy it.
i don't get that with fedora. not that fedora is a bad distro. it has its benefits, but it just focuses on things that don't make it as pleasant to use as ubuntu.
sleepee11 1 year ago
@sleepee11 Fedora is a general purpose system — it does not concentrate on one specific market. It is suitable both for home users, programmers and the corporate server. Unlike with Ubuntu, Proprietary software is not included in the repo's and must be added. I think most people who install fedora know they will have to roll their sleeves up at some point given it's bleeding edge nature - same with Arch Linux etc. For desktop simplicity maybe Ubuntu is better but thats not what everyone wants.

Its lack of well implemented existing security.
daeamarth 1 year ago
and fedora 14 wins!
TripleRhu 1 year ago 2
No doubt, but I think what drove me off from Fedora was the updater. If it is installing them and there are missing libraries it just stops, where as Ubuntu is much more intuitive and skips them or suggests the libraries required and installs them automatically . I guess I could always change the sudoer file, but it is such a tedious task. I understand the reasoning behind this though. Just sometimes that is just overkill with this security or safety concept.

Nanotech233 1 year ago
@Nanotech233 Sudo is also available in Fedora!
If you are getting away from MS products it means that you are either brave/stubourn enough to learn a whole new OS, what is the point of letting everything be decided for you? Get control of your PC, learn it ways and then have your way with it, and that is the beauty of Fedora 100% FLOSS
