I feel like going out in the summer heat and hot-wiring a car, taking in the scent of the leather, imagining about the owners of the car and driving into the night...
The Mayan Theater version of both "Stolen Car" and "Never Coming Home" are much better than the album, in my opinion. Not that the studio versions are bad, but you really get an appreciation for his talent with the acoustic version and the background singers here are fantastic. This reminds me of some of his original solo albums, that smooth, jazzy feel. Didn't get that same feeling from the album itself.
@912falcons I think a lot of that is because his live versions are built around the jazz musicians he's collected around himself (people he has chemistry and with whom he's comfortable doing some improvisation), while his studio versions are stripped down to to his initial vision of the songs (and are more purely Sting).
@v312ym34n That makes sense. I think the studio/radio version for this was a little overdone because they were trying to make it a dance song. It wasn't horrible, but I don't think it compliments Sting's style as well as it does with some other artists. This, on the other hand, is brilliant.
Shawn Colvin originally performed the song "All Would Envy" with Chris Botti on his album "Night Sessions". Chris Botti is the trumpet player in the video. The song "All Would Envy" was written by Sting for his album "Brand New Day" but was cut from the album. So while it was first performed by Shawn Colvin it was written by Sting.
What I take from this song is that no matter who is driving the car, it is as if it is stolen. Of course, there is the narrator, who is actually stealing the car, but both the imagined husband and wife steal the car as well, even if they own it. Just like the actual thief, the husband and wife are detached from each others existences. Without a sense of union and solidarity between husband and wife, the car is not shared but stolen from each other for different motives.
he is simply speaking to the car as if it were human... literary poetry at its best. u all are in for a treat with this video, its the only known verson of sting performing "all would envy"
he's talking to the car he's willing to steal like it's somekind of person that he's trying to reassure.. just like a surgeon will do with his patient..
@djomarino i believe he is referring to the alarm system. "it only takes a moment" means that he could slim jim his way into the car in less than a second. " don't be afraid" is about not setting the alarm off. kind of like if you surprise a person, they would scream or something. hope this helps you out.
To all of you that recognized the second song as a second part to the Stolen Car, that is actually a song called "All Would Envy", performed by Chris Botti and Shawn Colvin. It was featured in Chris Botti's Night Sessions and also played at the Blue Note in NYC. Both videos can be found on youtube. Here Sting made changes in the lyrics on a couple of occasions. The two songs were played together because of Chris' guest appearance.
What we have here is a mature artist plying his trade at the apex of his creativity - the band he's put together fits him like a glove and helps to make this a classic performance.
The second part is intriguing -it's not on the CD.. Sting can identify age-wise with the "older man" persona (as can I)
markovicjanko, you can find lyrics to all Sting songs on his website: w w w (dot) sting (dot) com.
Once on the website, go to "Discography", then hit "All songs" (on the left), and pick the songyou like. You'll find lyrics, comments, and descriptions for all songs.
Oh, the first part is "Stolen car", and the second part is "All would envy". Both are about cheating spouses. They are brilliantly weaved together here, are they not? :-)
I must say the concert version does give a smoothness in his voice, but to me the back up singers at some parts of the song (ie: "I'm a company director, two kids and a wife") in my opinion give a subtle mysterious sound to it.
Cool version, bravo Sting!

MuroKhan, you're absolutelly right. The studio version has a mysterious feeling, sort of haunting... It's one of my fave Inside/Sacred Love songs. :-)
This version is completely different from the album version, isn't it? Sounds more intimate, more melancholy.
Darn, Sting is such a great composer! His songs always sound and feel entirely different on live or acoustic versions! He's a genius!
