I prefer Laura Nyro's version but I can see why this was a hit. It's the first time I've heard this version and it's not just a straight copy of the original.
This song reminds me so much of how cool the early moinths of 1971 was, Reminds me of the Sylmar earthquake that I've experienced and even that was fun, Believe it or not.

@BonelessSausage69 To BonelessSausage69 oh I'm sorry I meant to say spineless jelly fish 69 why in the world would you post something like this? Is it because you have such a sorry little mind or a sorry little life? Do you feel hot? Well guess what its not the sun, I don't think that you are going to be so lucky. You know where you are going. And oh by the way there is no air conditioning or fans there. Feel free to dress in your tin foil suit because you will want to stay as hot as you can.
Sad song. It seems the poor girl who wrote this song was struggling with her sexual feelings of an improper nature. She knew it was wrong, but was nearly intractibly drawn to its exotic, impure but exciting nature. Exciting because it appealed to the flesh and promised so much, emotionally and physically. But, this is what happens to those who do not belong to Jesus Christ, Whose Name she even invokes. This song shows she had some familiarity with Him, but never drew close enough to know Him.
@KDL89983 Lady: Laura was half-Jewish and Bi-sexual. And her torment was just because she was brilliant and sensitive, not because of any of that judgmental Christian malarkey of yours. I dig Jesus too. But none of us can pretend to know what it was he wanted for us. Except to love one another.
This is one of the greatest pop songs OF ALL TIME! IMA LET YOU FINISH but seriously, the lyrics in this song were BANNED when Laura Nyro wrote it. Only a few people could even sing this but it's Barbra's signature. This is the only song I would ever buy or see Barbra sing. I'm into Radiohead. But this song is a masterpiece.
I LOVE this song! It's awesome the way Barbra slides up and down the scale but always nails the note. This is a fine example of how vocally skilled and talented she really is.
I think it is one of her best songs. I think this song hits deep in her heart. If you watch her she seldomds sings the who le song. I one video she makes comments like "yea MY mother working in a mine". The last time she sang, that I know of, she had the lyrices pasted on the floor. She seems to want to forget the song. My geuss is it hits deep in her heart. As for politics she has the same rights as any other American. In 1970 it was #6 one the charts.
@TheJessiePineapple Good example is Motley Crue. Loved their concerts and have their tapes and cds, but the way they lived their lives is absolutely appalling. Point being, love the music but don't have any expectations beyond that.
@RoryVanucchi The clock can't run out any faster (trust me, she'll live another 50 years), just like her mouth. I love this song though. And Laura, I love her version better. Obviously they didn't give her the band to back her up.
Alright, here's my last word on it: I keep the 45 to this song safely tucked in the back of the closet along with my Judy Garland records and my Garbo poster. Are pompous humorless idiots happy now?
I'm with 'tusconia',why's everyone getting themselves in a tizz over his comments? Jeeze, lighten up,peeps, lol! gay or not gay, a splendid performance of a great song by one of the greatest female singers-songwriters ever, Laura Nyro... Streisand's version is even better than the original
@DORSEY12100 I don't hate you unless you hate gays....a lot of straight people are against us having the same civil rights are you even though we are taxpaying American citizens. You can't oppress others and not have them hate you. It works both ways.
@DORSEY12100 Why would Barbra hate you? I'm gay and Christians treat us like shit. Christians are usually the ones going around hating people and discriminating. Honestly, the most christ-like people I've ever met are atheists.
@billyboylb The irony of course is that Christ himself said that there would be many bearing false witness in his name. But I suspect even Christ would be appalled by just how dastardly and full of hate so many nominal Christians - ESPECIALLY of the "born again" variety - have become. In that sense, it's actually too bad that the "second coming" is just another myth by which the controlling herd the credulous. I'd have gladly paid $49.95 to watch it on pay-per-view. @BedBugAcres LOL...very well said....I especially love the pay-per-view comment. While as old as time it really is sad how organized religion is used as a tool of control.
@billyboylb True Christians don't hate. Those that do can not call themselves true Christians. Please don't lump all of us in the same category. I am sorry you were or still are treated badly, but those that show hatred or treat you that way are not "Christian". Believing in Christ and following Christ is two different things. A true follower knows that you love everyone.
@nakedBison69 blah blah blah....more "christian" love I see......would love to chat, but my husband wants his big fat all-American dick sucked.....shouldn't you be reading "bible" verses in "YOUR" America? wonk, wonk...
billyboylb the gay homo treats normal, straight people like shit. billyboylb the gay homo goes around hating people and discriminating. honestly, the most gay homos are truly gay
@hustoni You are incorrect! Barbra is gifted with the greatest female voice ever! No one could ever sing this song better, I don't care who wrote it!!
i am a rock and techno person, but this album is great by any standard. most of it anyway. ive always tried to tell people who dont like her that she once made a great album, but nobody believes me. unfortunately, it only happened one more time with the "barbra joan" album. and then i never liked her albums again. except way we were a bit. this is also the period she made her only films that i like. go figure.
This vocal by Barbra puts me in awe everytime I hear it. Hearing this as a kid started me being a lifelong fan. An obvious assertion from the album cover - one could think of the stoney end as the end of the road?
what louie says is absolutely correct. Hard men, men in touch with their feelings, men who cry at the end of "the way we were", LOVE the BABS. Babs, you will always be the queen. You, too, Louie. ;-)
"When it rains it pours, sweetheart." "Hello 'Frisco!" "It daddy could see me know." "Rubba' rubba dub dub..." I bet you like Sondheim as well, honey. Just kiddin'. I'm a theatre person as well so I'm aware of the occupational hazard. 1 second ago
Sad, but not complicated. This song is about a girl, from a very hard life, and romantic love proved to be even more disappointing. Momma cradle me again too.
Streisand had (and says she still doesn't have) ANY clue what this song is about. Her then-record producer, Richard Perry, talked her into recording it.
Putting aside all the deep meaningful ideas of what the song is really about, I think that it is just such a great sound from the 70s that brings back so many good memories, oh what a youthful time without all the cares and concerns of nowadays...perhaps I'm just a nostalgic old git, but they were definitely better times.
Yes, it was being more youthful and thus more optimistic at the time. But objectively we're a more mean-spirited and insecure society, financially and otherwise now than we were then. You can't say no.
when i first heard this in the early 80s i thought it was "stormy end" which would make sense going back to momma after a bad relationship.
now knowing about laura nyro it is a little confounding to have an upbeat, uplifting song about being stoned to death and looking for a mother's help.
it's still a gem that should be on 70s radio stations instead of the same 200 politicallty connected songs.
@tucsonia You're sister sarah's kind of guy.... keep up the racism, stupidity, ignorance and intolerance. You are in no way a christian, and that's how the goBP loves em - stupid, racist, ignorant, un-educated. You and the plumber's helper could go a long way on faux "news".
@TumblingDice1972 Your name is "TumblingDice1972" My absolute favorite song of all time from my favorite band of all time. One of the Stones lesser hits - I'll never know why.
@tucsonia i dont think you have to be a deviant to like this song..it was miss streisand's attempt at being a pop artist...it was a success.. i dont know her personally,i am not gay, im not white , but I like her music too......
@nealadams70 Er, I never labelled gay as deviant, though my mainly tongue-in-cheek original response has gotten a lot of responses. It's just that loving Babs is thought to be stereotypically gay, like having a Garbo poster or Judy Garland records stashed in your closet (literal as well as rhetorical).
@tucsonia At first I was a bit put off by your your parenthetical comment: straight white guy etc...Bu then I realized that there are alot of of straight guys who dig the streisand sound (ha-ha). My father was a huge fan, and they didn't come any straighter than him. I've heard there's a web-site specifically geared to straight guys who are into streisand. Lastly, it just goes to show you that you don't have to be anything to like good music...Just an appreciator of music.
@tucsonia I've usually found her a little annoying; too melodramatic for the most part. But, "Stony End" and "Prisoner" seem to benefit from the same traits that I find so grating in most of her other work. It also didn't hurt being backed up by a great songwriter and a very tight band.
@tucsonia you're not straight - You have to be gay if you like barbra! ---you're closeted! -Your boyffriend knows that- You broke your mother's heart - your father questions his manhood - Please say you don't like Streisand - We want you as a straight man -Don't leave us- Sounds ridiculous doesn't it? next time don't precede your comments - gay men liove Sinatra and straight men love Liberace- Music has no labels or sexuality,--Remember that sweet boy!
@StanBennet Stan, What do you mean, every girl in AA fits this song? Really, would you explain it to me cause I love the song, but I don't get the meaning. Thanks.
I love both singers - Nye Streisand - both rich voices - different renditions.
For God's sake, people!
Who cares whether Whites or Blacks were better at mucis- or in the 60s music or what!?
Each is beauty full in whichever version or song or Time!
Personal choice really depends on the mood of the moment!
Stop with the "who is better"- God (!) let's go back to the time of the Troubadours of Aquitaine- where music was freely dispensed and shared- added to -improved - improvised !
Thanks -- why I didn't see it before is that flim flam man is the subtitle (In brackets), and Hands off the Man is the main song title, which I searched for.
After listening to Diana Ross' virtual knock off of this verson of Nyro's classic tone, (all be it slower and a bit dreamier); I'd put Barbra's cut head and shoulders above Ms. Ross' in power, passion and pop appeal. N short, Barbra has verve with a capital V.
This is my absolute favorite of all of Laura Nyro covers. It was the perfect venture into pop by Barbra Streisand. It doesn't stray far from Laura Nyro's own version. It is just more pop, less blues version. I remember being 2 years old and my mother incessantly played this song over and over. Forever etched in my mind.
I actually bought the vinyl single for this in 1971, about January, I think. It was winter. I had forgotten all about it and how damn good it was. Babs had the PERFECT voice for this one!
my favorite song since i have been a kid still great Babs BG

@billyboylb True Christians don't hate. Those that do can not call themselves true Christians. Please don't lump all of us in the same category. I am sorry you were or still are treated badly, but those that show hatred or treat you that way are not "Christian". Believing in Christ and following Christ is two different things. A true follower knows that you love everyone.

i am a rock and techno person, but this album is great by any standard. most of it anyway. ive always tried to tell people who dont like her that she once made a great album, but nobody believes me. unfortunately, it only happened one more time with the "barbra joan" album. and then i never liked her albums again. except way we were a bit. this is also the period she made her only films that i like.

You, too, Louie. ;-)

Putting aside all the deep meaningful ideas of what the song is really about, I think that it is just such a great sound from the 70s that brings back so many good memories, oh what a youthful time without all the cares and concerns of nowadays...perhaps I'm just a nostalgic old git, but they were definitely better times.
gom1956 1 year ago 5
Yes, it was being more youthful and thus more optimistic at the time. But objectively we're a more mean-spirited and insecure society, financially and otherwise now than we were then. You can't say no.
tucsonia 1 year ago
@gom1956 I can't agree with you more.
WinsomeJohnny 1 year ago
when i first heard this in the early 80s i thought it was "stormy end" which would make sense going back to momma after a bad relationship.
now knowing about laura nyro it is a little confounding to have an upbeat, uplifting song about being stoned to death and looking for a mother's help.
it's still a gem that should be on 70s radio stations instead of the same 200 politicallty connected songs.

@tucsonia i dont think you have to be a deviant to like this song..it was miss streisand's attempt at being a pop artist...it was a success.. i dont know her personally,i am not gay, im not white , but I like her music too......
nealadams70 1 year ago

Cheers!
billygoyboy 1 year ago
@tucsonia I've usually found her a little annoying; too melodramatic for the most part. But, "Stony End" and "Prisoner" seem to benefit from the same traits that I find so grating in most of her other work. It also didn't hurt being backed up by a great songwriter and a very tight band.
lrd9999 1 year ago
@tucsonia Funny, I couldn't put your comment any better. I can't stand her, but this is a great song.

Can you post the other two Laura Nyro songs Barbra covers on the album -- Hands off the Man and Time and Love ? I've never heard them.
drwinkle101 2 years ago
@drwinkle101 Flim Flam Man is already on here.
StanBennet 2 years ago
@StanBennet
Thanks -- why I didn't see it before is that flim flam man is the subtitle (In brackets), and Hands off the Man is the main song title, which I searched for.
Drblooter99 2 years ago
