  • my favorite song since i have been a kid still great Babs BG

  • took no effort from this female genius to make this. what a great song from a gifted singer.

  • Witty album cover.

  • I prefer Laura Nyro's version but I can see why this was a hit. It's the first time I've heard this version and it's not just a straight copy of the original.

  • Adorable!

  • 3 people have never seen the Stoney End....and that's too bad....

  • This song reminds me so much of how cool the early moinths of 1971 was, Reminds me of the Sylmar earthquake that I've experienced and even that was fun, Believe it or not.

  • i like diana's version better

  • 3 people don't want to go down to Stoney End.

  • This is just a good song and Barbra sings it beautifully!

  • @snowsbeau Barbra sings everything beautifully!

  • Brilliant song writing by Laura Nyro

  • Nice...I always like when Babs sings rockish stuff like this, it really shows her versatility as a performer.

  • anybody seen Harry Hill sing his in this Stand up DVD Hooves

  • @BottomBoosh Yep! I seen it live as well (not the evening of the recording though). Fantastic show.

  • Jesus was a great Guy , he liked Wine ,Women and people , he could tell a good yarn , and he was a bit of a Rebel RIP JC , Great song by Babs and Laura 2 NYC Girlies , FAB

  • @25ghr I don't know about the whole facial hair thing though. How many Twitter followers do you think he would have had? At least in the thousands I'm guessing

  • Barbra sings this with SOUL!

  • I think this is my most fave song sang by Good Ol' Barbra herself!! What a woman!

  • @BonelessSausage69 To BonelessSausage69 oh I'm sorry I meant to say spineless jelly fish 69 why in the world would you post something like this? Is it because you have such a sorry little mind or a sorry little life? Do you feel hot? Well guess what its not the sun, I don't think that you are going to be so lucky. You know where you are going. And oh by the way there is no air conditioning or fans there. Feel free to dress in your tin foil suit because you will want to stay as hot as you can.

  • Oh, I just love the tone of Barbra's voice in this, and her feel for a lyric and the spirit she imbues it with are excellent.

  • Great song by Nyro and great album cover.

  • Sad song. It seems the poor girl who wrote this song was struggling with her sexual feelings of an improper nature. She knew it was wrong, but was nearly intractibly drawn to its exotic, impure but exciting nature. Exciting because it appealed to the flesh and promised so much, emotionally and physically. But, this is what happens to those who do not belong to Jesus Christ, Whose Name she even invokes. This song shows she had some familiarity with Him, but never drew close enough to know Him.

  • @KDL89983 Lady: Laura was half-Jewish and Bi-sexual. And her torment was just because she was brilliant and sensitive, not because of any of that judgmental Christian malarkey of yours. I dig Jesus too. But none of us can pretend to know what it was he wanted for us. Except to love one another.

  • My all-time favorite Barbra Streisand song.

  • i like this uptempo Babs version very much as the audiences did too!

  • I remember buying the 45 of this back in the day. Still a good tune!

  • Babs singing Laura Nyro! It doesn't get any better than that!

  • ...funny. notice how few youtubers even bothered to click on Linda Ronstadt's version of Stoney End? hee, hee, hee....

  • This is my Streisand song, her voice is incrediable in this song. thanks for posting it .

  • Nyro wrote some terrific songs, but as a singer, come on, she was tone deaf. when I heard her sing this song, it made my ears bleed.

  • @jtsct I can't disagree more. I think she had a tremendous voice.

  • @jtsct She was a nervous singer, nervous in public. Listen to a few more videos. Really, she had a pretty good voice.

  • @jtsct Listen to hear on "Gonna take miracle". Very powerful and I think is the best version of the song.

  • This is one of the greatest pop songs OF ALL TIME! IMA LET YOU FINISH but seriously, the lyrics in this song were BANNED when Laura Nyro wrote it. Only a few people could even sing this but it's Barbra's signature. This is the only song I would ever buy or see Barbra sing. I'm into Radiohead. But this song is a masterpiece.

  • Wow!

  • Written by a Bronx girl.... Laura Nyro what a talent!

  • love this song

  • I appreciate those that enjoy Barbara & Celion. For me, this is the only song of Barbara's I really love.

  • i got news for you i am born again christian since

i was 11 so go about your business

  • BLAHBLAH GAY BLAH BLAH DICK BLAH I'M A LOSER -

getting back to the song, this is a great rock song from Babs.

  • barbra was asongbird and laura nyro was an angel. gr8 song

  • I LOVE this song! It's awesome the way Barbra slides up and down the scale but always nails the note. This is a fine example of how vocally skilled and talented she really is.

  • Thanks for this

  • brilliant song, this was a big favorite in a nightclub i used to go called Carolines in Manchester 1974

  • I WAS BORN FROM LOVE; AND MY POOR MOTHER WORKED THE MINES. I WAS RAISED ON THE GOOD BOOK JESUS, TILL I READ BETWEEN THE LINES.

    CLASSIC BABS!

  • I think it is one of her best songs. I think this song hits deep in her heart. If you watch her she seldomds sings the who le song. I one video she makes comments like "yea MY mother working in a mine". The last time she sang, that I know of, she had the lyrices pasted on the floor. She seems to want to forget the song. My geuss is it hits deep in her heart. As for politics she has the same rights as any other American. In 1970 it was #6 one the charts.

  • my fav

  • A truly talented voice that only comes once in a lifetime, if only she wasn't such a big mouth liberal.

  • @jtsct her political preferences have ABSOLUTELY no place on the judgement of

    th quality of her music

    music is universal

  • @TheJessiePineapple That is the best post I have ever read, you are ABSOLUTELY right:)

  • @TheJessiePineapple Good example is Motley Crue. Loved their concerts and have their tapes and cds, but the way they lived their lives is absolutely appalling. Point being, love the music but don't have any expectations beyond that.

  • @jtsct So you don't believe in free speech? I guess you're not a fan of the Constitution.

  • I don't know if it's Barbara's best song, but it surely is her most soulful!

  • @local2458 right up there! Ii think it is --- Laura Nyro wrote some great stuff!

  • streisand's best song, hands down.

  • @poeticjournalism ABSOLUELY. I love to youtube this and the Laura Nyro songs by the 5th Dimension.

  • what a brilliant song i could listen to it every day, what a singer

  • Wow!...Forgot this one!...I bet it has been 35 years at least since I have heard this...Thanks!

  • My favorite of her songs by the great Laura Nyro, who also did a wonderful version.

  • great artist..great lyric by Laura Nyro...great song...one of her many...

enjoy Barbra while you can...the clock is ticking on one of our great

    treasures...

  • @RoryVanucchi The clock can't run out any faster (trust me, she'll live another 50 years), just like her mouth. I love this song though. And Laura, I love her version better. Obviously they didn't give her the band to back her up.

  • what's sexual orientation-have to do with it ? lolol --I love Barbra--and this song --and i am married with 3 kids and grandkids lol

  • Alright, here's my last word on it: I keep the 45 to this song safely tucked in the back of the closet along with my Judy Garland records and my Garbo poster. Are pompous humorless idiots happy now?

  • @tucsonia I'm no idiot, but I love Garland, Garbo, and Streisand. Lol

  • My God, what a beautiful, beautiful voice. <3

  • I'm a short lesbian african jewish nun who lives near a brothel and I LOVE BABS and Stoney End...in fact I am stoned NOW!

  • I'm with 'tusconia',why's everyone getting themselves in a tizz over his comments? Jeeze, lighten up,peeps, lol! La Streisand IS seen as something of a 'gay icon',as are most female 'torch song' singers, and I instantly saw tusconia's comment as tongue in cheek! Oh,and YES,I am a gay man! Streisand has churned out some real crap down the years, and YES,I am a huge fan, lol. This song, however,is one of her best renditions.Say what you will about her,she always gives her all!

  • Barbra's going to be in meek the folkers2. I wanna see her in movies again.

  • What has being gay have anything to do with liking this?? This was Barbra Streisand's first attempt to break into the pop field and she chose then hot songwriter Laura Nyro's Stoney End. This version does not stray far from Nyro's own version. It is just more pop and less of the blues edge than Laura Nyro's version. It was a perfect song for her to break into pop music. I never tire of hearing it after almost 40 years. I am only 40 so it tells you how clear I remember this as a young kid.

  • Hey, I thought I just clicked over, off, of the Black Metal pages...why is everyone still arguing?? Tee...just kidding...I was just dreaming of how great it would be if I could do a Black Metal fusion version of this song!! Seriously...I know it would be so great! Hee hee...(no...I mean it...rraaaarrrrgghh...)...

  • Same with me.

  • I'm not really a Streisand fan (I'm a gay white guy) but I love this song.

  • The chord that she hits in the last 20 seconds of the song....only God

can really appreciate how great it is........

  • How come she never gives Laura Nyro any credit for writing this??? Maybe because her voice is so great that it supercedes everything.......

  • Brings back fond memories of the early 70's and my university days.

  • BARBRA IS A GODDESS IN POP MUSIC !!!! 50 YEARS AS A DIVA AND NO SCANDAL!!!!! SHE IS THE GREATEST POP SINGER OF ALL TIME!!!!!

  • Love the comments. Especially (and not in a good way) the one about the straight white guy. Kind of like you would have heard 50 years ago... I loved the song, even though I'm a white guy....

Keep up the supidity, ignorance, and racism... after all that's what sister sarah wants you to do, along with pick up arms and be a "warrior" for her views of religion.

  • @hoochgooch you're still a presumptuous, lefty ass. No matter how openminded you paint yourselves to be you all aresftill some of the most intolerant people on the face of the earth.

  • Love most of the comments. The funniest and not in a good way is the one about a straight guy. Kinda like you would hear 50 years ago, nice song, I like it - even though I'm a white guy.

Keep up the stupidity, racism, and ignorance. Sister sarah loves ya!

  • gay or not gay, a splendid performance of a great song by one of the greatest female singers-songwriters ever, Laura Nyro... Streisand's version is even better than the original

  • WOW! I still have the 45 of this song! I loved this song then, and I love it now.

  • But This is an Awesome song, or you would have to be able to appreciate it....

  • billyboylb

you answered your own question ,barbra hates me because I am a christian ,for the same reasons muslims hate me ,and I'm sure gays hate me too ......

but it was a pretty song

  • @DORSEY12100 I don't hate you unless you hate gays....a lot of straight people are against us having the same civil rights are you even though we are taxpaying American citizens. You can't oppress others and not have them hate you. It works both ways.

  • there are other versions of this song? this is the only one i have ever heard and i am 52.

  • Jim Morrison's cover of this song is better than Barbra's.....

  • God I loved this song.

  • I'm a white guy and christain ,I'm sure barbara hates me ,but this was a good song and she sang it well ,it is beautiful

  • @billyboylb The irony of course is that Christ himself said that there would be many bearing false witness in his name. But I suspect even Christ would be appalled by just how dastardly and full of hate so many nominal Christians - ESPECIALLY of the "born again" variety - have become. In that sense, it's actually too bad that the "second coming" is just another myth by which the controlling herd the credulous. I'd have gladly paid $49.95 to watch it on pay-per-view. "I know ye not!" indeed!

  • @BedBugAcres LOL...very well said....I especially love the pay-per-view comment. While as old as time it really is sad how organized religion is used as a tool of control.

  • @billyboylb you make a good point

  • @billyboylb

Well said! Christians like that have their feet mired in the sewers of history.

  • @Khatrubill Yes they do! :)

  • khatrubill's feet are mired in the sewers

  • @billyboylb True Christians don't hate. Those that do can not call themselves true Christians. Please don't lump all of us in the same category. I am sorry you were or still are treated badly, but those that show hatred or treat you that way are not "Christian". Believing in Christ and following Christ is two different things. A true follower knows that you love everyone.

  • @ahcomeon1 I'll believe you when I'm free to marry the person of my choice and serve my country without lying to my own government about who I am.

  • billyboylb is ungrateful of the fact that he lives in the greatest country in the history of mankind

  • @nakedBison69 blah blah blah....more "christian" love I see......would love to chat, but my husband wants his big fat all-American dick sucked.....shouldn't you be reading "bible" verses in "YOUR" America? wonk, wonk...

  • billyboylb the lesbian bitch sucks rosie odonnell's fat ugly misshapen ass

  • @nakedBison69 Whatever makes one happy!

  • billyboylb admits to being a lesbian

  • @nakedBison69 And you admit to being a hetero male with a 2 inch dick that ain't gettin' no pussy!

  • billyboylb the lezbo bitch has a gay two inch dick

  • @billyboylb You've said a mouthful there, Billyboy!

  • i better not ask what his mouth is fully of. yuck :-(

  • billyboylb the gay homo treats normal, straight people like shit. billyboylb the gay homo goes around hating people and discriminating. honestly, the most gay homos are truly gay

  • She did a good job, though not as great as Laura Nyro...

  • @hustoni You are incorrect! Barbra is gifted with the greatest female voice ever! No one could ever sing this song better, I don't care who wrote it!!

  • to each his own LACK OF TASTE!

  • @hustoni Laura Nyro is the female Rod Temperton, or is Rod Temperton the Male Laura Nyro, think about it, which is it?

  • this woman knows how to sing and can carry a note ,unlike the overrated artists of today

  • I've always loved listening to Barbara singing this song. She's got such a beautiful voice.

  • i am a rock and techno person, but this album is great by any standard. most of it anyway. ive always tried to tell people who dont like her that she once made a great album, but nobody believes me. unfortunately, it only happened one more time with the "barbra joan" album. and then i never liked her albums again. except way we were a bit. this is also the period she made her only films that i like. go figure.

  • this has to be the wrecking crew.

  • This vocal by Barbra puts me in awe everytime I hear it. Hearing this as a kid started me being a lifelong fan. An obvious assertion from the album cover - one could think of the stoney end as the end of the road?

  • REAL MEN REALHARD MEN LOVE BABS.....and guess what fellows I'm not homophobic, guess why?I'm GAY HAPPY VERY HAPPY but not gay.

  • what louie says is absolutely correct. Hard men, men in touch with their feelings, men who cry at the end of "the way we were", LOVE the BABS. Babs, you will always be the queen. You, too, Louie. ;-)

  • "When it rains it pours, sweetheart." "Hello 'Frisco!" "It daddy could see me know." "Rubba' rubba dub dub..." I bet you like Sondheim as well, honey. Just kiddin'. I'm a theatre person as well so I'm aware of the occupational hazard. 1 second ago

  • Sad, but not complicated. This song is about a girl, from a very hard life, and romantic love proved to be even more disappointing. Momma cradle me again too.

  • Streisand had (and says she still doesn't have) ANY clue what this song is about. Her then-record producer, Richard Perry, talked her into recording it.

  • ha ha yes its a 12 step also has chapters for Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, and Diana Ross. Sadly no charter groups in Europe yet

  • LMAO You're too much!!!

  • @martdelcat thanks glad I made ya laugh. my work is done here.

  • sorry was reply to wrong commennt

  • WHY DID LINDA R EVEN COVER THIS AFTERWARD, THERE'S CERTAIN SONGS YOU JUST don't DO.....ANYTHING STREISAND MAKES HER OWN ...USUALLY A GOOD IDEA!!!!!!!

  • brings back the memories of the good ole days smokin pot.

  • Brings back memories of college and discovering this great song.

  • Putting aside all the deep meaningful ideas of what the song is really about, I think that it is just such a great sound from the 70s that brings back so many good memories, oh what a youthful time without all the cares and concerns of nowadays...perhaps I'm just a nostalgic old git, but they were definitely better times.

  • Yes, it was being more youthful and thus more optimistic at the time. But objectively we're a more mean-spirited and insecure society, financially and otherwise now than we were then. You can't say no.

  • @gom1956 I can't agree with you more.

  • when i first heard this in the early 80s i thought it was "stormy end" which would make sense going back to momma after a bad relationship.

now knowing about laura nyro it is a little confounding to have an upbeat, uplifting song about being stoned to death and looking for a mother's help.

it's still a gem that should be on 70s radio stations instead of the same 200 politicallty connected songs.

  • I'm not reallly a Steisand fan (I'm a straight white guy) but I love this song.

  • @tucsonia Lol. I can do better than that because I am not either and I love this song as well.

  • Its nice to know straight white guys can like this song....(I am sure there is a support group.)

  • yes it is a 12 step, there are also chapters for Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, and Diana Ross. Sorry no Europian charter groups yets.

  • @tucsonia That's what they all say!

  • Somehow I knew I was gonna get it after I made that remark. I guess I won't bring up my Judy Garland records or Garbo posters then.

  • @tucsonia I was just trying to be funny, not a big Straisand fan either but this song rocks.

  • @tucsonia Music is music, straight, gay, black, or white. Don't make you less a man to listen to anything.

  • @tucsonia Don't worry...we won't think you're gay just cause you like a Barbra song. You straight boys are funny...lol

  • @tucsonia You're sister sarah's kind of guy.... keep up the racism, stupidity, ignorance and intolerance. You are in no way a christian, and that's how the goBP loves em - stupid, racist, ignorant, un-educated. You and the plumber's helper could go a long way on faux "news".

  • Comment removed

  • @tucsonia i know you are straight; but would you like some great head sometime?

    i am bi.

  • @tucsonia yah me 2 love the song

  • @TumblingDice1972 Your name is "TumblingDice1972" My absolute favorite song of all time from my favorite band of all time. One of the Stones lesser hits - I'll never know why.

  • @tucsonia i dont think you have to be a deviant to like this song..it was miss streisand's attempt at being a pop artist...it was a success.. i dont know her personally,i am not gay, im not white , but I like her music too......

  • @nealadams70 Er, I never labelled gay as deviant, though my mainly tongue-in-cheek original response has gotten a lot of responses. It's just that loving Babs is thought to be stereotypically gay, like having a Garbo poster or Judy Garland records stashed in your closet (literal as well as rhetorical).

  • Comment removed

  • @tucsonia At first I was a bit put off by your your parenthetical comment: straight white guy etc...Bu then I realized that there are alot of of straight guys who dig the streisand sound (ha-ha). My father was a huge fan, and they didn't come any straighter than him. I've heard there's a web-site specifically geared to straight guys who are into streisand. Lastly, it just goes to show you that you don't have to be anything to like good music...Just an appreciator of music.

    Cheers!

  • @tucsonia I've usually found her a little annoying; too melodramatic for the most part. But, "Stony End" and "Prisoner" seem to benefit from the same traits that I find so grating in most of her other work. It also didn't hurt being backed up by a great songwriter and a very tight band.

  • @tucsonia Funny, I couldn't put your comment any better. I can't stand her, but this is a great song.

  • @tucsonia you're not straight - You have to be gay if you like barbra! ---you're closeted! -Your boyffriend knows that- You broke your mother's heart - your father questions his manhood - Please say you don't like Streisand - We want you as a straight man -Don't leave us- Sounds ridiculous doesn't it? next time don't precede your comments - gay men liove Sinatra and straight men love Liberace- Music has no labels or sexuality,--Remember that sweet boy!

  • @tucsonia u suc

  • @StanBennet Yep Im one of them :))

  • Comment removed

  • @StanBennet Stan, What do you mean, every girl in AA fits this song? Really, would you explain it to me cause I love the song, but I don't get the meaning. Thanks.

  • I love both singers - Nye Streisand - both rich voices - different renditions.

    For God's sake, people!

Who cares whether Whites or Blacks were better at mucis- or in the 60s music or what!?

Each is beauty full in whichever version or song or Time!

Personal choice really depends on the mood of the moment!

Stop with the "who is better"- God (!) let's go back to the time of the Troubadours of Aquitaine- where music was freely dispensed and shared- added to -improved - improvised !

  • Can you post the other two Laura Nyro songs Barbra covers on the album -- Hands off the Man and Time and Love ? I've never heard them.

  • @drwinkle101 Flim Flam Man is already on here.

  • @StanBennet

Thanks -- why I didn't see it before is that flim flam man is the subtitle (In brackets), and Hands off the Man is the main song title, which I searched for.

  • After listening to Diana Ross' virtual knock off of this verson of Nyro's classic tone, (all be it slower and a bit dreamier); I'd put Barbra's cut head and shoulders above Ms. Ross' in power, passion and pop appeal. N short, Barbra has verve with a capital V.

  • Comment removed

  • This is my absolute favorite of all of Laura Nyro covers. It was the perfect venture into pop by Barbra Streisand. It doesn't stray far from Laura Nyro's own version. It is just more pop, less blues version. I remember being 2 years old and my mother incessantly played this song over and over. Forever etched in my mind.

  • I actually bought the vinyl single for this in 1971, about January, I think. It was winter. I had forgotten all about it and how damn good it was. Babs had the PERFECT voice for this one!
