To say Operation Chastise was a failure due to 53 men dead and 8 bombers lost is like saying the St Nazaire raid was a failure because 163 men died and a destroyer blew up.
It also gave Barnes Wallis support to develop his tall boy and grand slam bombs which became the most strategically important bombs in the latter stages of the war, sinking the tirpitz etc.
@ spineyExtra the loss of 8 bombers and 53 men can hardly be called a disaster. In context it prevented the German forces from forming a defensive line along the Mohne and Ruhr valley (the original Dutch plan for defending against attack) it also severely damaged German food production as the Ruhr valley was a major source of food for German forces in France.
good doc. but the truth of this raid was not successful - except as propaganda, no mission in which half of the aircraft are lost can really be anything other than a disaster. The actual amount this affected war production will never be properly known but is estimated at 2 weeks.
