this song was one of my uncles favoriet songs when he came home from viet nam. My family lost him to cancer recently. I had to hear this song and remember him. I love him and will miss him. Even though I was about three years old at the time I can still remember hearing that song on the radio and riding in his green olds. cutless.
I always loved the 'Salvation Army Band' style music. Since I was ten years old when this came out I had no idea it was about prostitutes. Funny thing the song was used as a commercial for some dairy product that I can't completely remember right now, but I do remember it featured women walking through a room with trays of sweet creams.
Man, DJ's back in the day freaked out when they figured out that this song was about prostitution. And, of course, churches had to get into the act and demand that the song be removed from playlists. If there is a god, I hope he/she pisses on the roofs of all churches that don't mind their own business. Fuck those assholes.
Weren't the psostitues in quesiton also mulatto?? (Like Rashida Jones and Maya Rudolph today?) That would explain the title and some lyrics like pitting them agauinst vanilla before the instrumental section..not that I have a problem with any of this!!! Great song)!!
Sweet Cream Ladies in life are some of the most down to Earth and responsive laadies a man could ever ask for, they employ their actress skills most of the time but can make a dude feel really loved by their words, manners and actions..
Yes indeed I knew from the start this song was about prostitutes...and I was 12 when it came out....
I love Sweetcream Ladies, the song and the Women....
I was a freshman when this song came out. LOL for some reason everytime I hear it I go back to my freshman year & going across the street to the cafe across from the school.
Hey y'all! How 'bout this? I never even heard this Box Tops song until 2008!! I was born in 1960 and should have... But some how it passed me by! When I heard it I thought, I wonder how many other REALLY COOL songs have passed by and I did not catch them the first time around? That'd be a cool topic.... Finding those songs, and highlighting their greatness... Those that maybe were on the charts a very short time, or what have you. We may all have our own songs that pass us by! Interesting
Bought this when I was 10 on 45. I dont care what it's about. I like eggs over easy and I leave my lyrics vague. This is a radio edit, btw. Dig late 60s pop songs with marching beats. Try "Evol Not Love" by the Five Americans. Any one think of any more?
Incredibly awful tune glorifying hookers. Namby-pamby lyrics & music. The only other song I can think of that was this bad in this era that made top 40 is Imagine.
@Desiree50 I hated Imagine from the first time I heard it. I hate it even more now. I see its appeal to progressive liberal dope swillers, though, lol. Good little lemmings.
@nachodaddy i guess i like almost any music that was around when i was a kid LOL.Maybe just hearing the songs brings back alot of good memories the late 60s and 70s were good to me.In my life the 80s were not good to me,so maybe i am blocking out the music.Does that make any sense? Who know?LOL.Peace ,Des
Of all the Box Tops' songs, this was by far my favorite. I loved the tune, but when I heard the words, I thought, "The adults who are playing this tune don't really get what they are singing about." It was perhaps that nudge-nudge, wink-wink, that made it ever so much more delectable.
This is my favorite of their hits. This must have been the last gasp of their top-40 career as "The BoxTops". You can hear a lot more of Alex Chilton's real voice (as it sounded in "Big Star") here than on their earlier hits.
It had such a bubble gum sound to it, that the radios played the song without anyone picking up the song's meaning. This was pretty risque stuff for radio in that era, especially since it was still on AM stations.
Kinda sounds like a cross between a " Salvation Army " and " Sgt Pepper " tune ! I really like this a lot. A forgotten oldie that deserves more respect ! And, I love the line " Who get tired of vanilla every day ". I see where your coming from !! PEACE.......
Another of their many hits. Thanks Alex Chilton for everything you and the Box Tops did. At least we will have have your wonderful music to listen to forever.
An unusual song for its day. The fact that it is by the Box Tops, a band given to top 40-styled music, is even more strange. Great song with Great Lyrics.
After all these years I finally heard this song again. I was only 9 or 10 when it came out and only remembered the first few lines. Being so young I never new what it was about. Thanks for posting it.
I'm talking about the TV commercial that used the tune for Sweet Cream Ladies, but changed the words to sell Cream Pies. *Note my first comment about the commercial. Then you'll understand why I quoted the commercial. = )
I think it went "Cream Pie ladies forward march, cream pie men adore them." And there were all these modly dressed women marching down the street with pies and then they showed a lady serving pie to her husband and kids, wearing an apron of course.
@EmpressOfWyoming58 OMG! Someone should put that commercial on YouTube. It probably sounded perfectly innocent back then. The same way Friendly's "Happy Endings" 2 scoop sundaes did.

I agree with @nachdaddy that this song is an ode to the 'ladies of the night', but disagree strongly on his assessment of the song's quality & worth.
This is, quite simply, a timeless classic.
