  • Excellent tutorial. 9 1/2 out of ten.

  • Hi Remy, I do appreciate the videos a great deal. Just wanna say thank you!

  • love yr lessons

  • 7:30 Jesus that's fast... :( it a;; blended together.

  • Ah I fell from my stool laughing because of the warning that you blended in. There is no ESK.

  • @Lylania what does ask stand for

  • hiii these are nice lessons good one

  • i'm so confused with the questions..i cant understand them? i dont really understand waht it is your asking....huh!

  • Sympa de faire des vidéos comme ça pour aider nos amis anglophones ;)

  • Please dON't stop! :( We want more!

  • 6:37 - First Question

    6:57 - Second Question

    7:30 - Third Question

This has been the hardest test so far. Reading and somewhat writing French isn't difficult, it's understanding people speaking French I'm strungling with, I've been doing a French numbers 1-100 Test where a man would say the number and it would display on screen, I can get every number now 1-100 just by reading it, but I'm still struggling understanding it being said. That was my biggest problem here too. Any advise?

  • I LIKE THE WARNING ABOUT ESK :) the begginers such as me could never learn without such detailed explanations. Thanks, great job!

  • Hello, Remy,

I've recently begun to teach myself French. Your tips on intonation and examples of contracted forms have been very helpful. Thanks for posting

  • Cool

  • Amazing background! This tower in my opinion is the most beautiful monument.

  • I liked the question round. I got it first time around :) I can't really hear what you say, but with the text it's better :P I like this where you just say the french sentences, because you can kinda guess what the words mean.

    RayWilliamJohnson rip-off btw :P

  • thanks a lot!!! :)

  • Remy, Muchas gracias por las lecciones!!!! Muy motivadoras!! Aunque aun me cuesta decir la "i" como una a, por ejemplo, cinq!!!

  • Ugh.....so hard to 'hear'.....when I see the words, then I get it, but to just listen? Soooo hard for me!

  • Isn't "est-ce-que tu as un ticket de metro" should "est-ce-que t'as un ticket de metro"

    2 Vowels??

  • @ashutoshrookie

Nice of you to notice ;)

However there's no clash of vowel sound between a french u and an a because it sounds almost as if a w sound was in between.

This doesn't stop many French people saying "t'as" but it's 2nd tier French. It really should be "Tu as"

    "That's French for ya!"

  • Remy, why do you say that the word for "we" is "ou" but when I look online and talk to other people who learned basic french, they say the word for "we" is nous ? ?

    Did I miss something?

  • @alexgibson198209

You didn't miss anything. "on" is akin to "one" in English as in "One has to be careful" but it is also used to mean "we" in French even though the official word for we is "nous".

To facilitate conjugation I'm using "on" for now because verbs used with on conjugates like those following "he" and "she".

    "That's French for ya!"

  • Oh yeah, I meant "on" not "ou". I figured nous and on are used. And ON was more of a slang.

    Merci!

  • @alexgibson198209 ou in french means or

  • Esk xD

  • Your videos are accurate, but not really memorable

  • love the ad lol dat was brilliant ...lol

  • lol your "political statement" at the end was funny. really made my day XD

  • BOnjour Remy je suis jeuz..comment ca va...well i need to speak in english....je parle un petit peu francais....i just learned 2 days ago if you don't mind....I would like to say that your videos are quite effective to english speakers like me....and i'm just beginning to learn more french words....Thank you..God bless you!!!

  • hola mi nombre es RONY GUZMAN DESDE COLOMBIA ME PARECEN MAGNIFICAS TUS EXPLICACIONES MIL GRACIAS POR TU APORTE ESPERO CONTAR CONTIGO HASTA QUE APRENDA FRANCES.

  • I talk about that in the next few lessons :)

  • Hi Remy Im learning a lot with your videos thank u ! I wonder if you could explain when to use DE, DES cuz is kind of confusing for me Thanks a lot Byee

  • "Des" is use for the plural of "de" (when there's more than one)

de la soupe = some soupe

    des soupes = some soupes

    "That's French for ya!"

  • thanks, merci, grazie, gracias!!!

  • french is a very difficle language.tu learn french welcome to france

  • or you can move to Montreal... so you will be able to live in english too :P

  • In this context

    "est-ce que" is more like

    "is it that"

    than

    "is this that"

    in English you can say;

"Is it the case that ... ?"

  • Move to France :)

  • remy, whats the fastest way to learn french. dont say there arnt any

  • Well. I did a three-week lang. program In Québec and we were only allowed to speak french. (unless it was english day for the quebecers) and had classes for three hours everyday mixed with cultural Activities. It amazing how much you learn. I pretty sure i learned more than all the years of french in school. You used it while i ordered my food. i chatted with the cashier. Shopping. everywhere. I also made friends that were from Québec, and that helped alot!
  • Total immersion.

  • OK, I voted for you!!! :P

  • Thanks :)

  • Hello all.

  • I believe the english origin of ESK was ASK. Perhaps?

  • to tramlaw77

no "esk" doesnt exist and never existed. its been made up to make you understand the prononciation of " est ce que"

    because when you prononce it

est ce que tu danses ? = esk tu dances ?

though "esk" must never be written for it does not exist, it's just a tool jremy made to make things easier.

  • no way.. kkkk..

  • ESK is like ASK. It is use for asking.

  • Very good idea! Good way to remember it!

  • Yes you would most likely. French speakers learn to re-tune their ear to the English accent :)

  • j' aime jremy

    great job jremy

  • so why does the 's' disappear when you pose the question in the form: verb-pronoun-noun? as in: parle-tu francais? where'd the 's' from parles go?

  • that was a type it should be parles-tu

  • Comment removed

  • You've stumbled upon an exception to the rule.

Tous as a plural pronoun is pronounced with the "s" [TUS]

It takes on the meaning: everyone or all.

NB: if the people in question are all female then you need to use "toutes"

"Bonjour à toutes" would infer that I'm talking to a group of women.

In this case the "s" is silent.

  • Tend to think of it you will hear:

"Bonjour à tous et bonjour à toutes"

For example when a speaker is addressing a large goup in a somewhat formal way.

  • I aprove ur sense of humor, Remy. haha.

  • congratulations from bresil

  • I like the propaganda message at the end ;)

  • So the sound is "Esk-u tu parles francais ?" ?

    Great lessons by the way.

  • omg u r hilarious!!!!

  • I always had trouble pronouncing est-ce-que but now with "esk," I can finally say it! Never thought about it like that, thank you so much!!

  • Music to my ears :)

  • You are amazing in your teaching methods.... ESK is an apt example for this...... I dont think too many teachers will go to that level of innovativeness to make it easier for the learners...

    3 Cheers for your efforts..!!

Just one suggestion:- Commercialize your talent, dude!! Come out with Video CD's in the market....You are much better than many other products I recently bought from amazon.....

  • You're very kind.

When I have made enough videos I might write a more in depth guide perhaps on CD/DVD.

    We'll see :)

  • I agree i would buy your DVDs. What other languages do you speak?

  • English, French, learning Spanish. Knowledge of German. Studied Latin and ancient Greek also.

  • So impressive!

I love languages and im always excited to learn little things. I speak fluent english and spanish and learning french now :) MY boyfriend is norwegian so im trying to learn that too, but its quite hard.

Keep up the good work your videos really help :)

  • I am enjoying brushing up on my French by watching these videos. I noticed that you did not mention that the answer "Je suis français" would be different both in spelling and pronunciation for a woman. "Je suis française." Forgive me if you discussed this in an earlier lesson. I will continue to watch your contributions.

  • Indeed. A person of the female sex would say:

    "Je suis française"

Thank you for your contribution :)

  • Remy at the begining a touts those things means what?

  • tout, tous, toute = all

Bonjour à tous = good day to all

  • am tired of the 'a' word for 5 stars. why not use 'groovy'? Appreciate your gentleness with us Remy.

    West Coast Florida

  • so , wt r the differences between "qu'est-ce que" and "est-ce que"? when will we use either one?

  • Qu'est-ce que manges = what is this that you eat?

Est-ce que tu manges = Are you eating?

  • thank you very much for these lessons, i moved from western canada to luxembourg city where everyone speaks french and these have been very helpful!! thank you jremy7!!!

    ps) nice crickets lol.

  • i know french from yelle

    :]

  • It's not "est-ce-que" but "est-ce que"

  • The American people talk fast too!!

  • wow! so french people talk that fast eh?? i think i have to get my ears used to listening music or french conversations so i can follow up..! anyways thanks again Remy :)

  • you are

    the best

  • Good video. Thanks for including the questions at all speeds.

  • C'est trop facile ce que tu fais!

  • Es ist einfach für Sie, aber es könnte schwierig sein für andere :)

  • Ach, deutsch können Sie auch!? :D

  • Hallo, danke für das Video! Warum machen Sie nicht ein paar Erklärungen auch auf Deutsch, so wie clipclass ?

  • Hallo, Sie sind herzlich willkommen. Bekümmert, aber ich weiß nicht, etwas über clipclass.

  • J'dore the crickets lol

  • Hi Remy!

    Bill's daughter here!

Your lessons are a great idea. I will share this with Megan! She is in French II.

    Take care.

    Cathy

  • Hey Cathy,

Glad you like the lessons :)

  • I don't tutor online. Only in Dallas and in person.

  • I was taught that 'vous' is more polite than 'tu' meaning you in English. If so,

I wonder if 'Parle-vous Francais?' is actually more poilte than 'Parle-tu Francais?'

(sorry for asking such basic question on this lesson though)

  • I will eventually get to the difference between "tu" and "vous" :) But you're right it would be "Parlez vous français?"

  • This is a very nice video

  • Nice video

  • ur so cute funny n smart

  • Blush :)

  • I'm glad you reminded me to mark those little five stars. I was getting caught up in the lessons and forgetting.

  • Not much that I know of. The Swiss do have a particular accent a bit on the slow side. French Canadians and Belgians also have accents that French people usually make fun of. Little do they know that these accents are actually leftover from the way French used to be spoken a few centuries ago.

  • Ok...here's a quasi-educated guess:

the friend you referred to is:

qu'est-ce que (what is this that)

Ok...mysery solved. Feel free to move on now. : ) Add oil...vrooom

  • Oh no.... You gave the entire plot away :)

  • Hi Remy love the lession...

I wondered if you could help me with one of your previous lessons ?

"He is not" is it Il n'est pas

"You are not" is it T'es pas or Tu n'est pas

"she is not" is it Elle est pas or Elle n'est pas

    etc

My French Canadian friend said for a negative you should use the n' ???? Confused

    thks aj

  • You're supposed to use "ne pas" or "n' pas" but the ne is often dropped in the spoken language.

  • je que ce-est tre's bonne a vous est le qualite' pour votre lec'on est monter. je ne pas antende pas quand le lec'ons a' francais dure arrive'. (sorry i dont have an international keyboard)

  • salut Remy,je suis heureux de suivre tes leçons puor apprendre la langue française,je suis italien et je voudrais savoir si tu parles la ma langue:l'italien.bon chance pour tes videos et au revoir, buona fortuna e arrivederci

  • Mi dispiace ma io non parlano italiano :(

You did a good job with your French. :)

  • hi remy u r the best teacher i have ever seen..i love ur videos but i got lesson 15 but i cant find 16..17...etc...wt should i do after finishing lesson 15???plz reply me as soon as u can..god bless u

  • Thank you.

    I'm working on more lessons.

    Coming soon.

  • KEEP EM COMMING REMY... iv been sending people your way! well done

  • Thanks for the publicity :)

  • Hi Remy!

I am from Cuba, but I have been living in the US for about four years. When I arrived to the US I didn't even know how to say "hello,"so I am sure you know hard that must have been. I recently started taking french at school and let me tell you, without your videos it would have been impossible for to make any progress. With your videos and the help my teacher I am sure I will be able to at least communicate with others. Thank you very much.

    Au revoir.

  • Oh wow! I too just browsed through all your lessons in 3 days. Your lessons are awesome!! Really good!! I've never manage to learn French because it's so confusing, but after watching your lessons now i believe i can do it! =D

Btw .. if i may ask, how can i say my sweet darling, and is there a difference if I say it to my boyfriend and to a little child? Thanks! =)

  • You can use "mon chéri" (for a boy) or "ma chérie" (for a girl). You can use this for a boyfriend / girlfriend or a child.

N.B. Yes it's like the chocolates "Mon chéri" which are sold mostly around Valentine's Day.

  • I would say that, "parles-tu français" is very polite. We don't use that form really often. It doesn't mean that we're not polite!!! But we never use it with friends or family. Only during specific situations, with people that we don't know.

I would NEVER say to my friend "As-tu un ticket de métro", but "T'as un ticket de métro??". ("ta" sound = tu as = t'as / you have = you've). Something like that :-)

So, it's easy. Only remember the first way (to simply add "?" at the end OR "esk...+?"

  • Thanks for you input :)

  • I'm french and it's funny to hear about the "esk"/ "est-ce que" concept ;-)

The basic translation of "Est-ce" (not est-ce QUE), well the basic translation of "est-ce" is : "is it or is this".

    Est-ce difficile ? = Is it difficult ?

Oui, c'est difficle. = Yes, it is difficult.

Est-ce = c'est, when you switch the words.

    Parles-tu français? Est-ce difficile?

Est-ce que tu parles français? Est-ce que c'est difficile?

    Both constructions are correct.

  • wow...i just browsed through lesson 1 to 15 in 3 days. I only realized you started last year. I'm doing my best to integrate everything. Again, as I've said, understanding the meaning of words isn't difficult, forming sentences with the right thought and grammar is.

  • Hi Irwina. You're part of my growing group of subscribers from the Philippines :)

  • I love you Remy. :o)
