This guy clearly doesn't know what he's talking about, and just reads one page on internet and thinks he knows everything about an album/artist/band. Bon Iver is a band you retard!
also, not everyone has a huge recording budget to make things sound super pristine and perfectly eq'd. this is a home recorded home studio album. says nothing about the quality of the songs.
it should be noted, research-wise, that justin vernon recorded an absurd amount of solo material and other band material under different names prior to Bon Iver.
and yes, bon iver is a band. the first album may have been a solo project, but a live band of four has now expanded to a band of nine.
I completely agree this album was so patchy compared to For Emma, Forever Ago. I think the first half is good, Perth, Minnesota, and Towers are all great songs but the last half feels so empty and the last song is way WAY too 80s for me. Strong 6.
i hated this album at first because of its almost difficult aesthetics but as my life has changed ive found myself in a different place than before. this album sums up my feelings for reasons i cant explain and that is why i love bon iver, bon iver.
@WideRangeOfFreq he already did, gave it the same score as this. which is just sad considering he gave returnof4eva a 9/10. i'm a hip/hop head but this and KoL deserve a 9/10 more than that Krit tape. I like Emma more than this album but this is still a phenomenal album
I think the bigger issue on this CD is the production. By adding such reverb and delay and putting everything at a distance it really takes away the punch in pretty much all the songs. The songs themselves seem pretty well developed. The unnecessary instrumentation isn't as big an issue to me as it seems to be to you, only in a couple of songs does it really take away. Still, this is an underwhelming release.
You should review all of the old Zao Metalcore albums. One, because it would be funny to see how the hipsters would respond. Two, because they are most intriguing extreme music artists on the face of the earth. Underrated, unheard of, quasi religious, cult specters that have influenced some of the worst bands of our generation, while themselves being unique, interesting, and sometimes inspiring.
@IndieAuthorX Steve Albini found them and offered to record them, the result was an almost masterpiece that fell short, called The Fear is What Keeps Us here, indulgent and rushed, with moments of greatness.
It takes a lot of balls to write an honestly negative review of Bon Iver. I agree with you on almost all counts. The album falls short of its best tracks and misses out on being on "greatest ever" lists.
@pwnerinator the first syllable of bon hiver is pronounced bɔ (the n sound is part of the second syllable); he is saying boʊ, which is the sound in "bone". for some reason it seems that many americans are fond of pronouncing this first syllable the latter way, but i don't see why it shouldn't be pronounced the "usual" french way.
@Hegerridadorno because its much easier to pronounce the N in bon as you begin to say Hiver . Otherwise you would have two vowel sounds backed up against each other its much harder to say. I think of it like Bo N'Hiver
@merocket obviously it's french, my point is that the first syllable is not pronounced "boʊ". this is easy to verify for yourself. i don't really understand the point of your comment.
Love the review! And really agree with you here. Wish I could say otherwise since the debut and EP were so great. One other thing: the lyrics. On songs like stacks and Beach Baby, they were like poetry, but here they're gibberish
Just saw them last night at their first hometown show in 3 years. They are simply amazing. I might be a little bias too since I'm from the same town but there is no denying the insane talent coming from such an uneventful area. Plus Bon is nominated for 4 Grammys including best alternative album & record of the year so they must have done something right.
I honestly feel like this album was better than For Emma Forever. Loved the creativity in this one with the darker, more abstract lryics. Holocene is a masterpiece.
After all this time beth / rest turned out to be my favourite. I guess songs like these sound real different to a 19 year old laying in his bed, thinking about life, not "how am I going to review this". Too much instrument talk here. Justin still is the main instrument. Though I know the album could have been better... Maybe. I'd say less calgary more beth/rest next time. Thanks anyway Anthony! You're just being honest.
It's an album of two halves. First half is very nice with Perth the standout but as the album goes on it gets a whole lot more generic and bland for me with songs becoming way too self indulgent. Shame because the album begun so well. It's by no means a bad album. But it really should have been a lot better.
@OkayCompy YEH WELL FUK YOU SON, WE AINT IN FRENCH WE IN MURICA AND IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, GET THE FUK OUT MY GOD DAMN COUNTRY! GOD BLESS THE USA! USA! USA! USA! FUCK IMMIGRANTS! YEEEHHH
Really agree with him on this one, the album is very ambitious but a lot of the instrumentation feels like it's there simply for the sake of being there. Prefer For Emma in general, more of a Fleet Foxes fan anyway.
I actually hated the album when I first heard it. I thought the rearrangements and the use of a waterfall of instruments were far from the bon iver I had grown to love. But after a half a dozen more listens, I realized, though slowly, that I had listened to it half a dozen more times than I had expected to. And like the imaginary "vines" that Anthony so carefully alluded to during the review, I've come to admit that the album has come to grown on me as well.
it got boring after 2listens...i loved the early minimal releases very much. just too much stuff going on. same with the fucked up record...a concept too big for a band like that
Like the style of the review (first I've seen other than the review of Calgary before this album came out). I thought that many of your views had substance and I will definitely listen to more reviews from you; I think you missed some of the point of the originality of Bon Iver and how over time you come to love the strange choices he makes in the songs with twists and turns and strange production sounds. Love this album. Well done on some bold choices and a variety of new tracks Bon Iver.
Fails miserably. An issue I had with holocene, a song that everyone loves, is that as much as for once the instrumentation wasn't totally aimless, the lyrics were. What made for Emma was powerful vocals and meaningful lyrics. No such thing here.
This review was a breaking point for me. Its why i stopped watching this channel. I got tired of seeing great albums getting panned for frivolous reasons. Also the reviewing style is not for me. I want reviews to be a better mix of objective and subjective
i honestly just think bon iver's second album is missing what made the first album so special. A lot of the songs just fizzle out and the extra instrumentation feels like they weren't added for the purpose of enhancing the mood of the songs. I was falling asleep while listening to this album not too long ago and was jilted awake by some of the clumsy instrumentation. It distracts from his strengths, gentle guitar chords accompanying those haunting vocals that just transport you far far away.
There are ZERO reviews of Lia Ices' album Grown Unknown... You review Lady Gaga but cannot spare a minute to review someone who's actually musically talented?
This album has completely taken me by surprise. I was a moderate fan of the first. I can't stop listening to this one. The extra instrumentation is flawless. To me it all coalesces seamlessly. The mood and tone of the horns and swells are breathtaking. Yes the album is messy, muddy etc, just as the first, but the fact that all these other instrumentalists actually got that aspect right is amazing. This album scares me. It just melts my heart. I hear no filler or fluff. Just pure soul. 10/10
Seriously, lots of Justin Vernon dick sucking going on. I mean, I like everyone, loved the first album. I think when you put an artist/group on such a high pedestal you can become very forgiving of their mistakes or failings. Hell you can even come to love them. Anyone that's been in love and had it end bad knows this. This album fell short. And I think in time the numbers will show it in time. That's my opinion. Take the shit off the pedestal.
see justin vernon doesnt care what this guy thinks, he plays to share his feelings and to not be like the norm. tell me the first time you listen to for emma, forever ago you liked it. it was something you've never heard before and it was weird at first but once you listened more to it you fell in love. vernon loves the sound of music and incorporates it wherever he can in the song...so hop off him trying to randomly "fit in instruments"
I love anthony's reviews. even when i strongly disagree. That's because he presents his OPINIONS (key word there) with such eloquence. He really puts a lot of thought into these and does his best to present an open minded view on an album. I really dig that. That's hard to come by these days.
And I feel as if this album is just a collection of essays. It feels unkempt and speratic because thats exactly how he feels about those places! But thats just me!
Opps I didnt mean to post that yet. Anyway, youre on vacation by youreself. For some reason the place just seems bigger then the rest of the world that youre used to, and all you want to do is find a place in it. I think thats what he was trying to do with this album. Vernon moved out of the forest, got a whole new feel for the world, met some new people. And now what he want to do is share his experiences. I feel as if we've learned from his past releases the Vernon is a storyteller.
Hey there this is my first youtube comment ever, so I hope it makes sense to you. Have you ever been somewhere new. Like on a vacation whrre you wrre buy yourr
I would argue that the tension between the muddiness and warmth is interesting and makes the album successful. it's like remembering something in bits and pieces, a nostalgia for something you can't quite hold on to. hence the 80s-ness of the album, something very familiar made strange. the claustrophobia and the lo-fi create a wonderful ambivalence against the pretty and neat sections of the album. to me, it's a case of album over songs individually.
i think we r all blinded because its bon iver. i listened to the album twice before watching this and i thought it was great but now that he says this it does make me realise that some tracks are not great, but i think it deserves about a 7-8. the expectation he had brought him down in many reviews
He's got a point. For me the album starts well but sort of loses it's way after 'Towers'. There's nothing beyond that worth going back to again and it closes with Beth which is a bit of a joke of a song. Overall the best of the album is good but I can see why there's a lot to criticize about it. Because it sort of feels a bit half baked and purposeless at times.
I wouldn't consider what I said as insults... More so as an... Opinion of my own ;)
Oh, and this review made me hate the album because every time I listen to it I think of his ugly-ass face and fucking retarded ass review, so I have grown to despise the album.
@thefallofaaron "He needs to get off his high horse" would be an opinion; "critiquing bitch" is an insult; insult: to treat with insolence, indignity, or contempt. Finally, you mustn't let opinion-based reviews sully your own listening experience. Does his rating turn Bon Iver's sharps to flats? Do his sounds turn from symphonic to cacophonic? Do his lyrics lose any eloquence? If not, then it shouldn't matter what one reviewer says.
@robzombie676 um, don't you think that's a bit of a hyperbole? it's a good album but "unique masterpiece"? i don't think so. i would say a unique masterpiece is a work so avant garde and singular that everything before and after it is compared to it (ex. pet sounds, sgt. pepper, songs in the key of life, illmatic) which is not say that you're not entitled to respect this album or bon iver's ability, but i would be more careful in my praise because it doesn't seem as important as other albums.
and i would say a "unique masterpiece" is something "unique" that touches various people all over the earth! i dont give any examples cause everyone got different ones! thats what makes them "unique"..
and thats what created something like this record.. he is a open minded musican who doesnt want to repeat himself over and over again..
so there you go.. weve got different opinions on that one.. and thats ok!
Anthony always does his research, so don't even try to call him out on that. So he doesn't love it.. Who cares. People are so offended by anyone or anything with an opinion that doesn't match the Pitchfork review they just read and decided was their own.
This guy is a fucker, and I hate him. He talks out of his asshole. He describes his "favorite" song, and all the other songs on the album follow the same description, yet he's such a negative little bitch.
I really want to punch this guy in the face. Looking at him makes me want to punch him.
I feel that your review of bon iver is unfair. You were expecting justin vernon to replicate his emotions and sounds that were "for emma." but to be realistic, that is quite impossible considering how much exposure and popularity bon iver (band) has gotten.
For me, I think the same reasons why you dislike this album are why I enjoy this album.
This album shows how much Justin has matured and evolved as an artist; it shows that perhaps he isn't afraid to change his musical style. 8.5/10
@theneedledrop stop being such a try-hard. you have potential to be a solid album reviewer but you're trying entirely too hard. "the somber piano sounds like an old stone house."
This guy clearly doesn't know what he's talking about, and just reads one page on internet and thinks he knows everything about an album/artist/band. Bon Iver is a band you retard!

I love anthony's reviews. even when i strongly disagree. That's because he presents his OPINIONS (key word there) with such eloquence. He really puts a lot of thought into these and does his best to present an open minded view on an album. I really dig that. That's hard to come by these days.
BTW i loved this album.

And I feel as if this album is just a collection of essays. It feels unkempt and speratic because thats exactly how he feels about those places! But thats just me!
Alex227493 7 months ago
Opps I didnt mean to post that yet. Anyway, youre on vacation by youreself. For some reason the place just seems bigger then the rest of the world that youre used to, and all you want to do is find a place in it. I think thats what he was trying to do with this album. Vernon moved out of the forest, got a whole new feel for the world, met some new people. And now what he want to do is share his experiences. I feel as if we've learned from his past releases the Vernon is a storyteller.
Alex227493 7 months ago
Hey there this is my first youtube comment ever, so I hope it makes sense to you. Have you ever been somewhere new. Like on a vacation whrre you wrre buy yourr
Alex227493 7 months ago
I would argue that the tension between the muddiness and warmth is interesting and makes the album successful. it's like remembering something in bits and pieces, a nostalgia for something you can't quite hold on to. hence the 80s-ness of the album, something very familiar made strange. the claustrophobia and the lo-fi create a wonderful ambivalence against the pretty and neat sections of the album. to me, it's a case of album over songs individually.

i think we r all blinded because its bon iver. i listened to the album twice before watching this and i thought it was great but now that he says this it does make me realise that some tracks are not great, but i think it deserves about a 7-8. the expectation he had brought him down in many reviews
lwmodonnell 7 months ago
He's got a point. For me the album starts well but sort of loses it's way after 'Towers'. There's nothing beyond that worth going back to again and it closes with Beth which is a bit of a joke of a song. Overall the best of the album is good but I can see why there's a lot to criticize about it. Because it sort of feels a bit half baked and purposeless at times.
amolbhatia100 7 months ago
I wouldn't consider what I said as insults... More so as an... Opinion of my own ;)
Oh, and this review made me hate the album because every time I listen to it I think of his ugly-ass face and fucking retarded ass review, so I have grown to despise the album.
^Theres some more opinion for you ;D
thefallofaaron 7 months ago
@thefallofaaron "He needs to get off his high horse" would be an opinion; "critiquing bitch" is an insult; insult: to treat with insolence, indignity, or contempt. Finally, you mustn't let opinion-based reviews sully your own listening experience. Does his rating turn Bon Iver's sharps to flats? Do his sounds turn from symphonic to cacophonic? Do his lyrics lose any eloquence? If not, then it shouldn't matter what one reviewer says.
jmlpaulin 7 months ago
Yeah, he gives himself way to much credit for being some youtube music critic.
He needs to get off his high horse and stop being such a critiquing bitch.
There are some changes on the album, of course. What artists would keep writing the same stuff over and over again?
Justin has the talent to pretty much successfully write and record probably anything.
This album has easily been my favorite of '11 and probably will stay that way.
It reached new heights, and Justin did NOT fail to impress.
thefallofaaron 7 months ago
@thefallofaaron does his review take away the enjoyment from your experience? if not, then don't insult the man for stating an opinion.
jmlpaulin 7 months ago
@jmlpaulin
um.. if hes going out there.. giving a review like that.. he must be ready for some critic himself!
robzombie676 7 months ago
funny.. a unknown guy on youtube try´s to question choises made by one of the best musicans on earth ^^
maybe all the changes you question are the ones who made it the unique masterpiece it is?
robzombie676 7 months ago
@robzombie676 um, don't you think that's a bit of a hyperbole? it's a good album but "unique masterpiece"? i don't think so. i would say a unique masterpiece is a work so avant garde and singular that everything before and after it is compared to it (ex. pet sounds, sgt. pepper, songs in the key of life, illmatic) which is not say that you're not entitled to respect this album or bon iver's ability, but i would be more careful in my praise because it doesn't seem as important as other albums.
jmlpaulin 7 months ago
@jmlpaulin
and i would say a "unique masterpiece" is something "unique" that touches various people all over the earth! i dont give any examples cause everyone got different ones! thats what makes them "unique"..
and thats what created something like this record.. he is a open minded musican who doesnt want to repeat himself over and over again..
so there you go.. weve got different opinions on that one.. and thats ok!
i just dont like critics anyway (;

favorite album of 2011 so far...sorry Anthony......
IUmTheMaan 7 months ago
Anthony always does his research, so don't even try to call him out on that. So he doesn't love it.. Who cares. People are so offended by anyone or anything with an opinion that doesn't match the Pitchfork review they just read and decided was their own.
MrKittenzzz 7 months ago 9
@MrKittenzzz Yeah, fuck that Pitchfork review. For Emma>>>>>Bon Iver.
xCroB93x 5 months ago
This guy is a fucker, and I hate him. He talks out of his asshole. He describes his "favorite" song, and all the other songs on the album follow the same description, yet he's such a negative little bitch.
I really want to punch this guy in the face. Looking at him makes me want to punch him.

i really liked this album, but i know alot of people who didn't. Did we listen to the same album? lol
ImperviousMason 7 months ago
So you know, Bon Iver is not just Justin Vernon. It's an entire band. Vernon put out solo work under his own name some years back.

You said you liked Touche Amore so review that next!
Michaelololollll 7 months ago

Wait Pitchfork gave it 9.5. Everybody goes home. This is the album of the year.

@PogoPantheon are you comparing justin vernon to dallas green? i enjoy both artists, but they are not similar songwriters AT ALL.

The last track on this album sounds like a Jean Claude Van Damme 80's sex scene song.
