its not a tom waits "thing" for me i am on the same wave length as this cat, granted i get minor signals and he's the damn dj but it all boils down to following your inner voice. he had the troubadour buisness down but decided to explore his own potential, not enough people are that brave.
It's funny the man just does does what he wants too and what appeals to him and apparently it speaks to our sub-conscience because he has alot of fans myself included, who listen to more "conventional" music... however today now he dominates my record player
@brandojitsu123 I think that's the reason why he has fans like us. Because he isn't doing anything he doesn't want to and honestly he sets a great example for everyone else because isn't that what life is truly about? Doing what you love & what makes you happy?! And he's shown how far you get by doing it your way and he's DAMN good at doing it his way too.
for me, i love his creativity and fearlessness. he seems un-afraid to try new, weird things, like vocal percussion, or playing instruments he knows nothing about. he creates truly unique music, unlike most anything you'll hear on the radio. i really love everything about his music, i sometimes feel as though i was born to hear it
he is jus different. the first song i heard of his was "God's away on business" (its not blasphemous)- i was interested in his lyrics and the way he sings. lyk i sed, he is different- who writes a song about their neighbours? his music is interesting- thats why people lyk him.
I just got into him yesterday, and I was wondering what everyone saw in him at first. I thought his voice/style was really weird, but I watched a couple more videos anyway, and now I'm completely addicted. His music and his voice are so different, like ABisopht said. Try listening to "Whistin' Past The Graveyard," "Hold On," "I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You," "Tango Till They're Sore," and his version of "Take Me Home" is incredible(not on Limewire, but you can find it on here).
He's an artist, a sound sculptor. He creates, acts, sings, plays instruments, creates eerie situations, beautiful lyrics, and is just all around more real than any overly polished, overly marketed popular act around. That is why people like him.
I like the way he can make you laugh cry and he can make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up with pure fear. Also if you look closely at his songs most of them are actually very melodic.
i know a lot of people dont like him when they listen to certain songs, make sure you listen to everything on like itunes (the samples) and find some stuff you like, im sure you havnt listened to all of him yet....that might help. and if you still dont like him, thats okay. not everyone likes tom waits!
Musers thumbs up!!!

Doesn't the temperature drop like ten or fifteen degrees when he starts to play this song?
JackB55555 3 years ago 27

First song I ever heard by tom was "Little Drop of Poison" in Shrek II, I googled him after that and found "God's Away on Business" I was hooked.
