This video just makes me smile from an over-welling fountain of the 'joy of cookin'.' Fun as a yard full of puppies and 4 year-old kids in a sprinkler on summer vacation.
Diversity and Originality are overrated. I rather listen to great musician who know what they doing jamming over and over again on the same old Jazz standard like this than some "innovated", "original" and God know whatever kind of new sound like noise music, new jazz, fucking 80's Miles... Most of them are either oversimplified or just random note put together without any regard for aesthetics.
Their skill and talent is only surpassed by the sheer joy they express in playing. Looks like their are having a ball. I've seen Tommy Emmanuel live in concert and he truly loves playing and has fun doing it. Looks LIke Doyle does too.
I'm not after a fight, but I do think the tone of TE's Maton is very overrated, I heard him play a Kirk Sands elsewhere on YouTube and personally I thought it was much better (warmer) Does anyone agree or is it my "tin" ear?
I've seen Tommy about 8 times in the past two years, and with the exception of one night where it sounded 'buzzy', his EBG808 sounded fabulous. His bigger bodied Maton sounded, well, bigger, but the 808 still sounded fantastic. I wish I could get my Taylor's expression system to sound 1/4 as good as the Maton.
Doyle Dykes decided to continue the chet legacy, and Tommy has gone to blaze his own paths. Doyle's style and Chet's go hand in hand, and of course Tommy can play all that stuff, but he has gone off on a different tangent from his original roots in bluegrass and country fingerpickin. the both of them are an amazing tribute to the evolution of fingerpicking, it's always great to listen to them
It's cool to see these two on stage together. I know they were both heavily influenced by Chet Atkins, and while they've both absorbed the style differently and taken it in different directions, they still share much in common.
Particularly amazing when you consider they had no rehearsal and had never played this number together before. While famous as fingerstyle virtuosos, they would give any top jazz player a run here. Improvising thumb picking style is virtually unheard of- these guys, Chetr Atkins, hard to name more.
Tommy's tone could be better ..it does not do his impeccable playing justice, i can espec hear it next to Doyle's tone who plays mostly Taylors & what i always thought Tommy should play..Tommy's axe seems thin, he could eq it I guess, but i would still would love to hear him on a Taylor Jumbo w/ the expression system..
I'd venture a guess that Tommy's sound is just a bit off. He plays a Maton, and having heard a Maton live (Colin Haye plays them) I know they can sound much more rich but even Colin's setup was a bit on the bright side that night, or put it through a Rivera Sedona because that would kick some butt too. Could be many things, perhaps he's not even playing through his primary setup, who knows. Still a great performance.
yeah but it's not the guitar that gives it that crappy tone it's the thumb pick. Tommy is the best but he uses the worst thumb pick in the world and that's the explanation behind that horrible tone.... Matons are amazing guitars so don't rag them...
what i was trying ti say is that taylor & Tommy -two of the best & i would love to hear them together, i know the Matons are great guitars, & if it's the pick well thats just crazy to hurt his sound w/ a piece of plastic..
Yeah but I guess he has a sponsorship from Dunlop and that's why he uses them. But that only shows even more the skill of Tommy, cause those thumb picks are big and hard to control so the fact that his playing so perfect is a testimony in its self.
Well, you can tell Tommy that. He's probably been buying the same pick for decades by accident. If you could lend him your foresight and suggest that he would sound better with a different plectrum, I'm sure he'd switch right away.
Haha you don't have to be a smart-a, I've actually played with Doyle Dykes and we had this conversation only guess what, he agreed with me so...and if you don't believe me I have pictures to prove it, so feel free to call me a liar.
I guess it just goes to show beauty is all in the ear of the beholder... I've seen Doyle at numerous clinics and shows and have always found his sound tinny and small, whereas Tommy's - to me- sounds larger and rounder. It depends what you personally search for in your axe's primary tone, I suppose, that will inform your opinion of whose sound is great and whose sound isn't
You're right. Doyle's forte is Bluegrass and country, that's why he has a "tinny" sound...like have you ever played a Nashville Deluxe Telecaster? They're so tinny and twang-ey that they almost sound out of tune when you play..but yeah, Tommy's forte is more jazz affiliated..jazz fans do tend to like the deeper toned sound..get the cd "Dykesology" you find some good variety there...btw I think tommy is the best in the world :)
want to hear last chord? they have a filter that prevents people from giving out links, but i'll try to get around it... the site is called daily motion (one word) and it's a commercial site -- use the extention for "commercial" -- then search for dykes and emmanuel...
see post above - the last chord is available on another site, but i can't post the link... they have a filter that won't let you do that. guess they don't want you to know about that other site... it's a good one.
2 awesome guitarists but not the "best" Kottke is more original and diverse. Just because you play fast doesn't make you a guitar god. That being said, I'd love to be as talanted as them!
@jbilly24 lol ^^ Do you even know who Tommy Emmanuel is? He IS the best finger picking guitarist alive and probably even the best ever, and not only is he a GOD in finger picking he is just a guitar hero, he is good in everything with the guitar, check his improv video's and his electric guitar videos, this guy is a legend.
@2bwhiteproud AMEN!! Nuff said. End of story. I think Doyle is the cleanest, most versatile master guitarist on the planet because I like his style and I've seen him live. Others could say the same for Tommy. They are both in the very elite class for sure.
The absolute top 2 guitarists touring the world today. Period. No other guitarists can compare at the moment - and I doubt we'll see one that can for generations to come. Gareth Pearson is the only person I think may come close to this standard one day
I should probably have mentioned within the fingerstyle genre. Joscho Stephan is alright but not really a fingerpicker, he's a gypsy-jazz guitarist. Not even close in talent to the likes of Emmanuel or Dykes I can confidently say.
I dunno, I'd say Joscho can fingerpick with the best of 'em... technically he's absolutely incredible (on par with these two). I've got to say Dykes and Emmanuel are capable of so much more range and emotion, but in terms of fast fingers, Joscho's as close as I've ever seen to perfection :)
I could write for hours and still not say enough good things about these 2. The 2 best guitarist alive. I have 2 signatures on my Taylor 814ce guitar,.. one is Tommy's and the other is Doyle's. GREAT People!
this has more musical talent and content than all of the pop crap out there right now
