  • 1:27 - 1:37 best part.

  • He got real deep & personal on this one

  • This album was written and produced as a divorce settlement. The agreement was Anna was to get the proceeds from his next(untitled and not yet in production) album. His initial thought was to put together a rush job on a mediocre product. His second thought was NO!, my fans deserve better than a half hearted effort. While Anna was not pleased with the content of the album, she was more than satisfied with the sales.

  • deep, powerful album. could almost shed a tear and his sheer genius.

for all the jilted lovers...here's hoping u find the answer to when did he/she stop loving you, when you stop loving them :-)

  • "Do youuuuu remember all of the BULLSHIT BABAY! OHHHHHHHHHHH YEEAAAAAAH!" God damn. He gives me chills when that part hits.

  • "If you really love me..with all of your heart. You'll neva take a million dollars to part!" MAAANEE WHAAAT!!

  • How do you dislike this.

  • There's too many good quotables in this song but my fav is "I have to leave you for my health's sake".

  • so true.

  • This is a deep song!!! I feel like he speaking on my marriage....I love Marvin Gaye wish he was still here so we can have more real music like this!!

  • thx for the lyrics this a one of my fav ! !! awesome song !

  • The best vocal harmony on this, just superb, I love you Marvin!

  • so deep, painful, sincere

  • Anyone that has been heart broken before this pierces straight through the heart

  • Oh man, I love this song so much! I've never heard something that sounds like this.

Anyone know why this version sounds different from the one on Spotify?

  • THIS IS PURE HEARTBREAK MUSIK... CLASSIC... WE ALL LIVE THESE SITUATIONS THRU LIFE

  • He was the greatest singer of all time as far I 'm concerned. I sorely miss new music of his, even though I have most of his albums.

  • He was the greatest singer of all time as far I 'm concerned. I sorely miss his music.

  • the break up anthem!

  • Real Music!

  • giseba7: I sincerely hope that you NEVER have to go through the "things" it takes to appreciate the entire album. Took me YEARS. And "things".....But, believe me, I get it now! It is not required that you feel every song, in this instance....This is one of those rare cases when one GREAT song can easily give you the scope of the entire album, anyway.....Avoid "things" for as long as you can!

  • I have to admit. I still have trouble appreciating this album.

What is great, is it is so real! And deep. Easier when you have been through some things.

  • rip mavin gaye

  • This is one of the greatest albums Marvin ever made musically. All proceeds to the album was given to Anna Gordy cause they were going through divorce and this was his way of paying for alimony and all. He sang all the chords and backup on all his music. In all actuality, he was a producer something like a Quincy Jones but very misunderstood. RIP Marvin u are greatly missed!!!!!!

  • "What I can't understand is, if you loved me, how could you turn me in to the police...." Now that line really rings a bell.....

  • Simply Put, Nobody Better.....

  • when all else fails. go back to the classics!

  • MY FAVORITE SONG IN DA WORLD!!!!

  • There will never be another Marvin! Thank god for what he left us.

  • Awful album cover, brilliant music !

  • OMG.....this song takes me to back to a relationship that didn't work out. I still miss her after all these years. Marvin Gaye's music is so real that you can relate to it. He was so ahead of his time.

  • THANK YOU MARVIN FOR SPEAKING 2 MY SOUL!!! NOTHING OUT 2DAY COULD EVER SUM UP ALL THE EMOTIONS IM FEELING! JUST LISTEN 2 THE WORDS! ITS SAYS IT ALL!!!

  • This joint is saving my life right now. It's amazing the way these old guys created those timeless songs that said all the things we still want to say today. It's universal, it's powerful, and it speaks to the soul. Thank you, Marvin.

  • i remember being so excited when i heard motown was releasing "in our lifetime" and "here, my dear" on cd. i had owned a cassette of "in our lifetime" but never had heard "here, my dear". i had searched for it everywhere but it was long out of print. after listening to the cd intially, i did not really understand it and thought it was a real letdown but after giving it another listen or so, i soon realized that what i had purchased was the greatest secular album/ work of art in history.

  • Daryl Hall does justice to a version of this MASTERPIECE, but no matter how great his version is, it just doesn't have all that MARVIN'S original has. This song follows no pattern, no established rules, no predictable direction. For the times, a whole new way to appreciate SOUL MUSIC. True honesty in the LYRICS, somewhat similar to what Brian Wilson was attempting at the time. Marvin gave new life to Soul, which was beginning to bog down with "MESSAGE" songs...

HONESTY is ALWAYS hard to take...

  • @technothanks

    PREACH!

  • @MsMerising Thank you! I have always felt that the effect of this tune was like listening to a good friend after a few bourbons....The inebriated, universal TRUTH!

Daryl Hall, for all intents and purposes, took a JAZZ tune and made it into a POP tune, and that RARELY works out as intended....

  • @technothanks

I don't buy into the 'positive/negative' argument. I believe in expressing your truth, even if it's ugl, and Marvin did exactly that with this tune. And that is why the song is BRILLIANT.

  • @technothanks I forgot Daryl Hall covered this! And yes, Marvin definitely about the "messages".

  • the other day!!!!!!

  • I love this song. So full of emotion and his voice is so pure.

  • Listening to this feels impolite.

  • @Applemask That's probably the most appropriate way to say it. It is truly personal.

  • This whole album is such a classic! I still give I Want You the nod as far as his best work, but this is a runner up

  • Music doesn't get any more soulful than this. Although I'm sure there's musicians out there today who can reach up the ranks of Marvin Gaye, but they're gonna be hard to find. :(

God Bless You Marvin Gaye! :)

  • in tears right now. such a tragic end to a talented but tormented soul rip Marvin

  • @dincode187 ain't THAT truth!!!

  • This is clearly some pure heart felt sh*t. I feel sorry for every person in this "play." I wouldn't want to be any of the players in this scene...nobody really wins :(

  • My uncle exposed me to "What's Going On?" when I was 17. Pure Eargasm! Then from then on I gradually enjoyed all of his masterpieces. "Here my Dear" did not appeal to me at a young age due to my lack of understanding . The material expressed was beyond my years. However, 25 and now finally understand the context while going through a similar ordeal.

  • @MaverickMuze I first heard this album when I was 14 and I was overwhelmed by the emotion put into it. A masterpiece!

  • Love you good....

  • Best song I ever heard. Both songs in that album.

  • what a great album his best as srl1225 says

i have grooved to it for 10 to 12 yrs now

  • This is too Deep!!!! This Hit Me in my Life . Bad times!!!! I would Love to be in Love listening too His Love Song .

  • Marvin's lyrics have inspired many greats. A artist before his time the anger with politics, the way he expressed himself, and how he threw this album together not realising that it was thrown together just to hurry up and get it over turned out to be a masterpiece. Once the colored barriers where broken and motown let him do whatever the he wanted his musice was better than when he first started out of motown. I wish they would do a movie on him like they did on the Temptations.

  • gone too soon.... its a shame i never saw let alone hear the man live but i make this promise ill play this on my wedding day it may not be a wedding song in fact its a divorce song. but i'll tell u why its sheer raw emotions of love on display in this song and that will be what my marriage will be based on R.I.P Marvin

  • il restera le plus grand !!!!!!

  • Best Album ever. Someone could write a whole play on this album.

  • The best ever know questions asked. I'm sure many would agree. How couldn't you. Your greatly missed Mr. Marvin Gaye.

  • He's the best I've heard. He has incredible range, but not the best range (maybe amongst males). He has incredible power, but not the best power. What makes him great is a combination of things like range and power, along with his style. His unqique voice, timing and manner in which he hits notes...he's just amazing.

  • But I'm not really bitter babe, I wish you all the luck and all the love in the world. But I know you'll never be satisfied, you know you still want me standing by your side!!! That's my favorite lyric there. I'm going thru it right now. ;-)

  • "If you really loved me with all of your heart you wouldn't take a million dollars to part"--Sick!!!

  • I was just listening to this last night. Awesome. Thanks for posting

  • This entire album is about his divorce from Anna Gordy Gaye. He threw this together because he had to give the proceeds to her. Listen to this album. Vey underrated, his best work in my opinion.

  • Lke this song..

  • @srl1225 BALLAD!

  • @srl1225 I can agree.

  • @srl1225 This is so very true. She ripped him off for all he had.

  • @srl1225 .. that's exactly right!! My dad told me the story behind this album. Classic!!

  • @srl1225 u right poor marvin i feel ur pain :(

  • @srl1225 I thought he only had to give her HALF, though? Please fill me in, if you don't mind the story's not too clear.

  • @WMBunch1983, good question. Marvin's attorney, Curtis Shaw came up with the idea.He got Anna to agree to $600,000. Marvin was getting about $295,000 or so per album as an advance per album from Motown (owned by her brother, who, ironically). Curtis wrote it up so Anna got the first $305,000 of the proceeds from the album. Anna agreed, Marvin signed off and the judge entered the order. I don't know how much the album made. But of course the work is priceless.

  • @Flozell2000 one other thing. Anna originally wanted $1 million dollars. Curtis talked her down to $600,000. But that 1 million is what Marvin is referencing at 2:21.
