This album was written and produced as a divorce settlement. The agreement was Anna was to get the proceeds from his next(untitled and not yet in production) album. His initial thought was to put together a rush job on a mediocre product. His second thought was NO!, my fans deserve better than a half hearted effort. While Anna was not pleased with the content of the album, she was more than satisfied with the sales.
Marvin had a musical weakness - he just didn't know how to make a crap album!
"After agreeing to the deal, the singer went into his recording studio in an effort to give Motown a "lazy, bad" album starting sessions in the spring of 1976. However, as Marvin set on making the "lazy" album, the singer's deep emotions and bittersweet feelings for his soon-to-be former wife took over the music."
giseba7: I sincerely hope that you NEVER have to go through the "things" it takes to appreciate the entire album. Took me YEARS. And "things".....But, believe me, I get it now! It is not required that you feel every song, in this instance....This is one of those rare cases when one GREAT song can easily give you the scope of the entire album, anyway.....Avoid "things" for as long as you can!
This is one of the greatest albums Marvin ever made musically. All proceeds to the album was given to Anna Gordy cause they were going through divorce and this was his way of paying for alimony and all. He sang all the chords and backup on all his music. In all actuality, he was a producer something like a Quincy Jones but very misunderstood. RIP Marvin u are greatly missed!!!!!!
OMG.....this song takes me to back to a relationship that didn't work out. I still miss her after all these years. Marvin Gaye's music is so real that you can relate to it. He was so ahead of his time.
THANK YOU MARVIN FOR SPEAKING 2 MY SOUL!!! NOTHING OUT 2DAY COULD EVER SUM UP ALL THE EMOTIONS IM FEELING! JUST LISTEN 2 THE WORDS! ITS SAYS IT ALL!!!
This joint is saving my life right now. It's amazing the way these old guys created those timeless songs that said all the things we still want to say today. It's universal, it's powerful, and it speaks to the soul. Thank you, Marvin.
i remember being so excited when i heard motown was releasing "in our lifetime" and "here, my dear" on cd. i had owned a cassette of "in our lifetime" but never had heard "here, my dear". i had searched for it everywhere but it was long out of print. after listening to the cd intially, i did not really understand it and thought it was a real letdown but after giving it another listen or so, i soon realized that what i had purchased was the greatest secular album/ work of art in history.
Daryl Hall does justice to a version of this MASTERPIECE, but no matter how great his version is, it just doesn't have all that MARVIN'S original has. This song follows no pattern, no established rules, no predictable direction. For the times, a whole new way to appreciate SOUL MUSIC. True honesty in the LYRICS, somewhat similar to what Brian Wilson was attempting at the time. Marvin gave new life to Soul, which was beginning to bog down with "MESSAGE" songs...
@MsMerising Thank you! I have always felt that the effect of this tune was like listening to a good friend after a few bourbons....The inebriated, universal TRUTH!
Daryl Hall, for all intents and purposes, took a JAZZ tune and made it into a POP tune, and that RARELY works out as intended....
I don't buy into the 'positive/negative' argument. I believe in expressing your truth, even if it's ugl, and Marvin did exactly that with this tune. And that is why the song is BRILLIANT.
Music doesn't get any more soulful than this. Although I'm sure there's musicians out there today who can reach up the ranks of Marvin Gaye, but they're gonna be hard to find. :(
This is clearly some pure heart felt sh*t. I feel sorry for every person in this "play." I wouldn't want to be any of the players in this scene...nobody really wins :(
My uncle exposed me to "What's Going On?" when I was 17. Pure Eargasm! Then from then on I gradually enjoyed all of his masterpieces. "Here my Dear" did not appeal to me at a young age due to my lack of understanding . The material expressed was beyond my years. However, 25 and now finally understand the context while going through a similar ordeal.
Marvin's lyrics have inspired many greats. A artist before his time the anger with politics, the way he expressed himself, and how he threw this album together not realising that it was thrown together just to hurry up and get it over turned out to be a masterpiece. Once the colored barriers where broken and motown let him do whatever the he wanted his musice was better than when he first started out of motown. I wish they would do a movie on him like they did on the Temptations.
gone too soon.... its a shame i never saw let alone hear the man live but i make this promise ill play this on my wedding day it may not be a wedding song in fact its a divorce song. but i'll tell u why its sheer raw emotions of love on display in this song and that will be what my marriage will be based on R.I.P Marvin
He's the best I've heard. He has incredible range, but not the best range (maybe amongst males). He has incredible power, but not the best power. What makes him great is a combination of things like range and power, along with his style. His unqique voice, timing and manner in which he hits notes...he's just amazing.
But I'm not really bitter babe, I wish you all the luck and all the love in the world. But I know you'll never be satisfied, you know you still want me standing by your side!!! That's my favorite lyric there. I'm going thru it right now. ;-)
This entire album is about his divorce from Anna Gordy Gaye. He threw this together because he had to give the proceeds to her. Listen to this album. Vey underrated, his best work in my opinion.
@WMBunch1983, good question. Marvin's attorney, Curtis Shaw came up with the idea.He got Anna to agree to $600,000. Marvin was getting about $295,000 or so per album as an advance per album from Motown (owned by her brother, who, ironically). Curtis wrote it up so Anna got the first $305,000 of the proceeds from the album. Anna agreed, Marvin signed off and the judge entered the order. I don't know how much the album made. But of course the work is priceless.
@Flozell2000 one other thing. Anna originally wanted $1 million dollars. Curtis talked her down to $600,000. But that 1 million is what Marvin is referencing at 2:21.
1:27 - 1:37 best part.
