would it be possible to just live in boston and hang with the berklee crowd and jam with them? or is it kinda cliquey and people arent open to outsiders? im in virginia right now and i really just need to live in a fucking huge environment of diverse musicians. definately dont have the money for berklee tho...
a scam? my good friend daniel went to berklee..hes 24 and now a full time music teacher and he plays gigs every single night ...sounds likes hes living the dream to me..
A scam? Berklee has some of the most saught-after grad and post grad staff available...you just need to focus your attention instead of being there "for the ride and connections" I am a drumset/percussion guy and have learned everything from Berklee or their grads.
I will tell you.... This is just art at its best. Thanks for keeping the Jazz groove alive. Not enough young people around that know the first thing about Jazz. And what it has meant to every genre of music, dance or any other form of the Art persuaion.
aren't you the one that said "what high school is this" on the berklee ensemble - beat it video? i don't think you know alot about berklee. they take top notch musicians and make them musical gods. it may be on the more expensive side but there are loads of colleges that are. maybe you're just jealous of the people that go to berklee.
Go to Berklee, it's the most important thing I ever did for my musical career. You'll learn so much, The faculty is the biggest and best in the country so you can take a little from everybody. I've got more gigs from networking with class mates than anything else. I went to USC for grad school and it doesn't compare. If anyone writes something bad about Berklee on here it means they didn't graduate and they are bitter. I have never met a graduate who didn't love it.
What can you do out of berklee? Like as in career choices? I am a guitarist in highschool and I just want to get out there and get a name for myself to grow and grow and be known someday.
@kylejeffreycrane I am wanting to go. I'm going into my sophomore year in High School, and I'm a guitarist. My biggest concern is the audition. Skill-wise, i'm not too worried about it, but I'm absolutely terrified of the theory knowledge i'll need. Could you possibly give some insight as to what I'd need, or direct me to someone who can? Thanks!
Don't be too worried as they have music core classes that seem to be very well rounded. Just prepare as well as you can and don't get too caught up-- you are going there to study music so they don't expect you to be a pro, just promising. Do a bit of ear training, learn your basic harmony theory and you should be okay, but studying more will give you an advantage. In the beginning you take your ESPA exams (technically optional) which place you into the appropriate classes. Good luck.
@DylanTMathews My ear training is my strongest suit as far as the theory stuff goes.. Do they really make you sight read? and how do they make you play the jazz standard? Im just more worried about the reading.. but my aural skills are very good
@smitty010493 They make you read (but I'm not sure if you need to for the audition) but most guitarists, myself included, are expected to royally suck at it, so just work on it a bit (pick up "Rhythms Complete" if you want a bit of a head start, pretty easy stuff though.) For Jazz standards just be able to play the melody and harmony separately-- I haven't really been asked to do much chord-melody, oddly enough. Again, people usually have a few holes in their knowledge and they expect that.
@1KOOLRIFF I made it into Berklee on piano and there was no theory knowledge, just aural skill building. I mean, they accept people with NO knowledge so they dont expect much. I did sightreading of contemporary charts & played what i prepared. Then, they asked me if i knew any other tunes, which shocked me (i only had 2 prepared) but i ended up doing blue bossa, autumn leaves, and blue monk. It was a fun audition since the judge was jamming on guitar along with me haha. Good luck on ur audition!
@kylejeffreycrane You've never met a graduate who didn't love it because everyone who hated it dropped out or didn't go. Berklee is great for networking, but if that isn't your goal...
Anyone know what song this is? Or was it an original composition? I really dig the bass groove during the solo; I would play this if I could hear the head. :(
