as a UK fan, i understand this completely.. we have a small student section behind one goal, the rest of the the lower arena is full of old ppl who pay no attention to the game, but they are pumping the money in, being old donating alumni. Its really frustrating. The upper arena is full of the real fans...
You don't know what you're talking about. The students were chanting at the alumni sitting behind the basket. This used to be student seating like the other end, but the AD took it away to sell to alumni. So when the Purdue player is shooting free throws and the alumni are just sitting there not trying to distract him, the students started chanting for them to stand up and try to distract him.
It has NOTHING to do with your 85 year old grandpa.
in response to 004cmill's opinion that old people suck, this chant is really uncalled for. My 85 year old grandfather has been a season ticket holder at IU for 30 years, long before most of these idiot students were born. I really don't think he appreciates these chants and neither do I.
What was so hilarious about this is that the day after the original "stand up old people" chant, the IDS (indiana daily student (it's a newspaper)) had several articles talking about this chant, interviews from alumni who were offended, editorials saying how it was immature and we should be better fans than that. The next game when the opposing team was shooting free throws in front of the alumni seats, the students were screaming their heads off, but it actually worked and they stood up.
Haha... love this basketball chant. I like Indiana's student section, too. Ours (Penn State) is probably the weakest in the Big Ten ...meaning we don't experience or form the same atmosphere at basketball games as everyone else :( I'm jealous.
Oh, haha. It was the same scenario with us during the early season... only the 'die hard' PSU basketball students attended the games... which was about 20-30 students, lol.
I love the "stand up old people" chant. One of those classic student section cheers that everyone knows, yet nobody knows where it started. It's been a staple of the last few minutes of Wisconsin Badger hockey games for years.
Although I am a student, I can't complain about how many tickets we get. We get 7800 seats, which is BY FAR the biggest student section in the Big Ten. We get plenty of seats. The problem is that the students are too spread out.

There is no point to this video. It's a guy shooting free throws. Come on over to my house, you can watch me shoot them from my driveway. I'll get the kids next door to cheer for me.
When I was a student at IU there was no student section. The students got six tickets (Always different seats) a year. We always wanted to sit together, and stand through the game, but the ushers would make us sit because of "the old people" sitting behind us. Thus the "stand up old people" chant. I love it!!
Actually the chant was started during this game because we were pissed the bleacher seats opposite end from the band were removed from the student ticket package by the Athletic Dept. and made public admission for people who sit on their hands for most of the game. But given the IU still has about 7,000 student seats per game, you can only be so mad.

I agree. Go to Rupp Arena and you will also understand this. Those "old people" pay for these huge programs.

@Mottsdale Yes. And they should get the seats at midcourt...not behind the basket.

sir, have you ever been to an iowa basketball game?
westfootball32 2 years ago
No... which is why I don't have an opinion about them. I'm sure they're great, but I haven't seen Iowa's student section so I can't say anything.
F1shst1cks 2 years ago
lol no were lucky to get 10 students in non-conference games that aren't vs Iowa State or Northern Iowa...we suck

If you compare our student sections in footbal, though, it's probably the exact reverse. So don't feel too bad.

At Purdue we could have sold all of Mackey's seats to just students within a few hours.
