  • this video really helped me out thank you

  • A good way to get them used to you is to sit in a chair in the middle of a small room with the lights off. (use a nighlite for yourself). They hate bright light and loud noises. Put their cage in the room when they are up and active and open the door to the cage and let them explore while you are in the room. If a bathroom, close the toilet lid, the drains and stuff material into any open holes under the cabinetry. Drape fleece ropes for them to climb on. Do this for at least an hour each night

  • me and my girlfriend just rescued two sugar gliders that totally neglected them, they are terrified of humans and bite you when you try to hold them and dont want to leave their cage at all. the cage was completely filthy and so was their food and she was feeding them cat food. do you have any advise for me on how to train them and make them nice?

  • Yes I understand how it can be with some gliders. Believe me, I cut 92 sugar gliders' nails every three weeks and most of them are rescues. If yours are unruly, you need to wear two t-shirts, double-up the fleece and completely immobilize them for the trimming. This means you will have to hold on to them pretty tightly with your one hand pressing them against your chest while you cut with the other. Over time they get used to it as they bond with you. If you've only had them 6 wks it takes time

  • My gliders bite and are hyper and seem stressed and difficult each time I try to cut nails, and I have ended up with bites and scratches and it takes hrs! Any suggestions? I try to talk to them calmly, i've tried the fleece, I've tried treats-they don't want them cuz they know what's coming and they don't like it...I have only had them for 6 weeks, but this is the second time they've needed their nails cut-and this time they are getting stuck in fleece in their cage, and on me in tent time...an

  • Thanks so much for making this video! We have 2 sugar gliders and had to idea how to do this! :)

  • lol I love the way you talk to your glider... such a good fat boy! thanks for the video! gonna do my first trimming soon

  • @mammab1203 If you live anywhere close to Van Alstyne, TX and want to visit, we will show you how to do it face-to-face. Good luck

  • @LuckyGliderRescue I'm in WV.. too bad.

  • what you give to him?? candy??

  • @gameyignoto Yes, it is essentially candy. Nestle makes "Nestles Toll House Premier White Morsels" which are basically fat and carbs. One or two as a treat is OK, but not as a diet of course.

  • I love how loving you are towards your suggie! Makes me go awww -3

  • @Alisyalicious You are very kind, I must admit; however, at the end of the day when I have to cut 80 gliders' nails (once every three weeks or so), I am pretty worn out towards the end.... :-)

  • @LuckyGliderRescue I definitely feel you there. But that still doesn't stop you from treating them kindly! :) They sure are lucky suggies!

  • @LuckyGliderRescue You own 80 sugar gliders?

  • @hatsamb We have 15 sugar glider pets and 78 in rescue for a total of 93. That number changes up and down all the time. For example, in the last two weeks we have adopted out two singles after pairing them with other gliders, but several have also come in. We are going to pick up another 7 today from a person who lives in Austin - a pair and a colony of five. This year so far we have probably adopted out 30 or so, but it is hard to keep up with all the incoming ones...

  • @LuckyGliderRescue :O wow, nice job! Do you keep them in decently sized cages?

  • @hatsamb We think so. There are about 30 cages. Most of the larger colonies are in cages that are at least 5 feet tall. The pairs are in 3 foot high ones. All of these are in a dedicated rescue room. We have an open house on Oct 15th in Van Alstyne TX if you live close enough to come visit so you can see for yourself...

  • @LuckyGliderRescue

Well, I sort of live in Australia, so that wouldn't be possible xD! But thanks :) I am glad you are caring for them :)

  • @hatsamb Australia is wonderful. I have been there five times and have fond memories of my visits. We may have a web cam for people to see what's going on at the event.

  • um my glider is extremely hyper and constantly running, during the day if i wake him he acts like it's night time, how am i supposed to trim his nails?

  • @destinyeahh Well the whole key, as the video suggests, is immobilization. Fleece is a great material to use to wrap the glider in so it is easier to hold on to him. If you wrap him in the fleece and hold on to him firmly, you can ease out each limb, one at a time, and do the trimming.

  • "Gotta talk nice to em let em know you care... Gotta get more exercise fatty" That part made me laugh (: very informative video though.. Wish me luck. Haha

  • @CorruptionIMLC OK good luck. Please contact us if you need help

  • @LuckyGliderRescue It went very well. They're pretty stressed out and getting lots and lots of treats to make up for it though.

  • I have my boyfriend hold my sugar glider and rub his belly until he falls asleep and then I cut his nails with small human finger nail clippers and clip them all when he is asleep! Sometimes he jerks awake but we just put him right back to sleep and continue. i dont clip them very close, just enough so they arent pointy anymore, but flat.

  • @BrandonAndKendra Wow you are very fortunate he is so well behaved and sleepy when you cut his nails! That is fantastic :-)

  • My boy is pretty calm like that one but my girl is unruly and mean. She does not really like to be touched outside her pouch..any advice for her?

  • @PurpleFire1982 Yes I would recommend trying to clip her nails in the morning when she is sleepy and less active. It is ok to double the fleece and tuck it under her head to keep her from biting if she is a biter. Tuck the other end underneath her tail and hold on to her gently but firmly applying just enough pressure against your chest to keep her from wiggling free. Some gliders just don't like getting their nails trimmed but it is very important to do because long nails is a health risk

  • @LuckyGliderRescue ya i was trying to do it this morning when i sent that comment...i got her done it just took about an hour with several bites...and one big jump into the dags kennel lol. She made it out alive

  • @PurpleFire1982 congratulations! You might try clipping her nails in the bathroom with the door closed in case she jumps... I do that sometimes with the wiggly ones :-)

  • @LuckyGliderRescue ya i might do that next time....she likes it in there but once she gets up the curtain she doesnt want back down lol

  • my two sugar gliders have sugar sharp nails, they arent tamed, they wont let me hold them like that, but their nails are like sharper than a knife! and when i try to get them outa their cage they just grab on to something and i wouldnt be able to get them out! any tips ?!

  • @NancyLovesChinchilla Yes, you can attempt to cover their pouch or box with a big, no-pill fleece and catch them in the fleece as they emerge from their pouch or box. You can also put a fleece in their nesting area so it has their smell on it first so that will help keep them calm

  • Really great video!!

  • Thank you I have 2 and now I know how to do it. :O)

  • lmao. You don't have to make this a blitzkrieg xD

  • thanks, i needed this. i have a nail trak in her wheel, but she doesn't always run enough to trim them down enough.

  • @mrsrottenkitti Glad to be of some help!

  • @LuckyGliderRescue

Thanks for the info, but do you have any tips for a glider that is absalutely hyper, and crazy? on how to do this more with them

  • @Gravelocked Yes the key to cutting the nails on a hyper glider is twofold: 1) calm the glider first by feeding him or her a lickey treat like honey, or a yogurt drop. Sometimes, having a bite to eat first calms them down; 2) immobilization. especially with a hyper glider you need to keep them very still so they don't twist around and hurt themselves. Spend extra time wrapping them in the fleece, holding them firmly but gently. Take your time repositioning the glider for each foot/hand

  • @LuckyGliderRescue

kk thanks so much! Got two of them and my female is prego but she is a little ball of hyperness :3

  • You can try but I think it's even harder. Dragging a file back and forth across their nails would require absolute immobilization of their thin and delicate digits first. Doing that for each nail is more stressful for the suggie than a quick "nip"

  • Can you file their nails?

  • @strongin13 Actually that is considered the better method by most vetrenarians.

  • i just got mine from their 2nd owners... still getting used to me, they dont let me pick them up from above, it's their choice to come or not at all. jealous of yours :) their cute.

  • lol i love how he calls him fatty

  • Okayy :D Thx !

  • Great vid ! (:

urm.. do u trim every nail on the legs ? or leave the 2 outer nails untrimmed? thx :D

  • On the feet, there are two digits that are fused together and two that are not. The two that are fused together have two tiny, thin nails that are used for grooming. You can trim them but you don't have to trim them as often. Trim just the very tip of them.

  • Ed, great video! This is an exceptional video on clipping their nails. My own vet doesn't do as good a job as you do with your suggie. I wish I was as good as you were at this! Hopefully time will do the trick! Great video!!! :)

  • dstny444 thank you so much. I hope you can do it yourself with not too much trouble after watching this. Poor little critters hate it so... be sure to give a treat aferwards :-)

  • one of the things gliders really don't like, but it shoud be done. it's important
