I just started a UML class, and I really want to like it because I know it'll help me in the long run...But it feels like a serious pain in the neck. And I'm using Visio, which I believe to be straight from the fifth circle of hell.
I once made a project without using any designing at the beginning what so ever and I ended up rewritting it like 3 times and it still was pretty sloppy. UML and in general designing your software is essential I believe.
All those who hate UML.. Try to develop / design something really complex like say a Traffic Lights System with Vehicle Effectuated stream lining between consecutive Traffic Lights .
@iambilloo I'm as a beginning IT-programmer really excited about programming. And UML is a great way to give a structure to your program and a good way to discuss your program with teammembers. However and don't get me wrong on this, but I do think UML is has too many rules and conditions... I do think they should not have used three different languages to make one. Which is UML...
im a rather new "architect". i like biulding houses and stuff, but i lost my old program and i want to know what would be a good program to start with and still teach me alot of the things i need to know in the future. and should i get a hp laptop or macbook? and if i wanted to do design for video games like biulding maps for games such as halo 3, what kinda sorftware should i get?
Then why we still need know UML? I know it looks elegant, and urge developers in the team to use it as in design stage. well, they like coding, instead of a pretty diagram.
In fact, I agree that User case, Class model, and activity model are most useful, not rest ones.
no, i even used UML and it's helpful when you are doing SE. UML is the language for modeling of objects in diagram. however, i might agree with you, because i would say it takes time though to have a diagram if you have already the structure in mind. but providing UML is a very helpful especially when you don't have to go the code itself to understand how the process works, you just have to look at UML and then you understand it. that will save your time actually. UMLis really helpful for SE.
@zhaoyichun Hi there ! I myself don't like to use UML (in fact i don't know much about it). Do you think it slows down the development process ? Would it help in complex systems if we start using ULM ?
if you could make a tutorial that start at the beginning of a project, and work it up to the final product(program that works what the person wants to).

Once you fail, Come back and watch this video.

to avoid little sheets of paper and bad reading you should draw them on paint and use some screen recorder like hypercam or like that .
thanks for explanation btw

in real life, programmer don't like using UML
zhaoyichun 3 years ago 25
Maybe that's why so many software projects are just... a mess. ;)
I agree with you though.

@zhaoyichun maybe that's true for small to middle size projects, but when handling big software development, UML can be handy

@zhaoyichun in real life, 70% of software projects fail to be completed in the time and cost initially said. Wonder why?

@DanyAlejandro Excellent point.

@zhaoyichun cannot stand it! I do my own version much quicker more efficient and suits me better UML out dated IMO
