The Genesis is close to the arcade version, its small differences like: less detailed backgrounds and enemies disappearing, but its a really good port.

You could play it on all these other systems or play it on the Sega Genesis.

Sega Genesis version is better because like he said two more levels and more variations of enemies making the game even harder especially fighting Death Bringer.

the axe in the arcade version gilius is gold,that confusion as married-"what are the true golden axe?that one stolen by death adder or that one by gilius?so sega did the gilius's axe in mega drive version to become steel (bronze perhaps,i like to speculate on this point).

Great review,even though the way you play this game is a tad n00bish. You can run in the game, you know... It's what's missing from your game in the part with the dragon, for instance.

There was a PC port too back in the day. I use to play this with my dad. Beat the Sega port a few months ago. Didn't how short this game really was. Classic i recommend people pick it up. Don't download it for free support the developers.

I like the genesis collection cause for $20 bucks (new) your getting not only Golden Axe but the rest of the series along with a bunch of other cool games. That value is just better than going and purchasing each game individually on the Virtual Console.

im played the 2 versions in the launcher date ,im made it to finish the 2 games,and think the genesis version is a most dificult than the arcade version,but im finish he very easy.!!try to finish the genesis game kid chameleon dont loosing a life and in 2 hours!!!im made it!!jejeje

i always played the genesis version it was alot harder because death adder was not the final boss, death bringer was and he was very difficult to defeat without a person helpin you because of death bringers special powers and hes 2 fellow skeletons helping him whoch i remember was very frustrating.

The xbla demo is very generous, it lets you play halfway through the game!

IMO there are better games in the genre (Final Fight, Streets of Rage series) but this still is a pretty damn good game.

I'd like to add that the GBA version does not have 2 played mode :( They could also have picked a much better game to bundle it with than Sonic Spinball

thanks for the review, i was glad to find out that the xbox live version was arcade quality, i played both the arcade and home version, but they were defaintly different, and the home version suffered but it was still a good game, i was disapointed when i popped in the cartridge to my genesis if i remember correctly but i still played it

the original arcade Golden Axe rom was 24 megs. the Megadrive / Genesis version was only 4 megs. the arcade ran on Sega's System 16 board which was significantly more powerful than the Genesis. so although the Genesis version was a good translation, it was obviously downgraded from the arcade. having the XBLA port of the arcade is definitally worth it.

To really enjoy this game your gonna need a cool arcade stick. Dose the 360 have such in either 1st or 3rd party?

A lot of the ports and remakes of Sega Genesis games on the Game Boy Advance were awful. Golden Axe, Ecco the Dolphin, Revenge of Shinobi, Sonic the Hedgehog, Comix Zone in Europe... the list goes on and on. It's like a handheld trail of tears for long-time Genesis fans.

I wish you would show the last cool levels and bosses in more of your reviews, and the cool stuff eg more magic spells, 2 player action and how you can fight each other, and other tidbits. You did the same with turtles and double dragon :(

Golden Axe was very faithful even on the Amiga, where it was an early game also, loaddddds of fun.

The arcade version is a lot shorter then genesis version.

in the arcade version one you defeat death adder the game ends

in the genesis version one you defeat death adder the king and queen ask you to go after the rest of the henchmen thus the game continues
