  • get yer bloody head out man !

  • with this coming back into service next year wonder what stock its gonna have coz its gonna look very odd unless they repaint some stock to match the engine ?

  • Thank god they gave it a face lift!

  • See my earlier comment from 2 years ago, and it seems there are like minded people out there who think this locomotive should have an engine put back in it. According to a press release from the 125 group, and the NRM, this will happen soon folks,!!

  • doesn't look that aerodynamic

  • I rod ethis on a Bristol-Padd service when it was being tested with passengers. It certainly was dofferent, but I cannot say I liked it. I was glad the production trains looked better!

  • They merely presaged the banal and unimaginative multiple-unit hegemony that we are stuck with today..

Still.. never mind.. profit, reliability and efficiency over feeling eh? But who will weep oceans when they go? Not me..

  • one quick witty observation/joke/ whatever you want to call it:

would we love the HST as much as we do if they hadn't of changed the way the power cars look?

  • Love 'em or hate 'em , they saved the credibility of BR and served the public long into the private era.

  • did this have the same VP185 as the production HSTs?

  • @456013matt It had the same Paxman 'Valenta' 12RP200L 79-litre V12 engines (2250hp at 1500rpm) that the production HSTs were built with. The first VP185 was used by 43170 from September 1994. These ran alongside the original Valenta engines until 2005-2009, when they were all replaced by the MTU 16V4000R41 engines.

  • Is that a Mk1 Catering Vehcile at 00:31 ?

  • @Nathan83a Yep. It ran around with a specially BT10 fitted Mk10 before the buffet vehicle was delivered

  • @tantive4 Duh! Mk1, obviously

  • Probably most interesting is at 0:15 - that's running with an APT prototype carriage

  • Nice one, great stuff, cheers.

  • I took a trip up to London on this set. It was arranged to give the traveling public a taste of things to come on the Western.

We left Cardiff on time but were delayed by ten minutes at the Severn tunnel but got into Paddington ten minutes early. We flew down the Thames Valley. It was quite a ride. When I passed the loco in Paddinton the driver had a grin from ear to ear.Over the years I have ridden thousands of miles on the HST 125"s, but that first ride will always be a fond memory.

  • Great vid although I live on the other side of the world and had heard and seen a HST albeit on video on my first visit to the UK in 2000 I was blown away by the noise and speed on Didcot station and rode on one from Taunton to Birmingham. Its a shame the prototype has no engine in it and that they didn't last in service along aside the production series. Anyway 5*****

  • Look on the positive side, you have the XPT which although not as fast, still have paxman VP185 engines

  • @faulcon1 The prototype should have an engine in it soon - it is hoped that it will start running again. Search "Project Miller".

Currently there are no HSTs in service using the original Valenta engines - the final run was on 22 December 2010 from York to Sunderland. The return of the prototype to service would be a first time that a Valenta engine has operated in a HST since then.

  • @bwhugul Great to hear that the prototype will have an engine soon and a Valenta engine at that.

  • Footage featured on Inter-City 125 "The Need For Speed"

  • Why is the second coach MK1?

  • Its a diagnostics coach used by Derby RTC, most probably to examine performance.

  • dynomometer car wasnt it. used to examine the engine and faults ect.???

  • I sent an e-mail to the NRM about 6 months back, 43000 which is in the museum actually has no engine in it, and there are no plans at the moment to fit one. Maybe we should persuade them...

  • Oh, if only there were a load of unwanted Valentae lying around...

    ;-)

  • @tantive4 Funny you should say that....

  • Great vid 5*. I have a picture somewhere of the two power cars dumped at Derby Works in the mid-80's I must dig it out.

  • excellent as usual Rob...

  • Cheers for that Rob.

  • The same front end as applied to E3173!

  • Lucky with us being now in a stage where we treasure what we create that one of the prototype hsts are actually stored, but sadly not preserved. Makes you proud to be British.

  • Yes I agree who would have thought that the Hst would still be around today.

  • One of the prototype power cars is preserved at the NRM in York

  • Yes I know, ive seen it ;) It is stored in York, but not preserved on a railway

  • It's "Preserved" as part of the National Collection in the same way as "Mallard" and the "Flying Scotsman" are, so is 100% preserved and not stored. It's in the best place it could be as if it were anywhere else it would just sit and rot as it isn't a running loco anymore, and to be honest, that sort of power would be wasted on a 25mph railway.

  • I meant ''preserved'' as on a preserved railway. And i'd rather hear a Valenta on a '25mph railway' (Actually its 35mph) than not hear it at all in a musuem

  • All but two "preserved lines" in the UK run at 25 mph not as you state 35mph, these two lines are the Nene Valley and the Great Central railways. I'm not going to argue with you as your knowledge of HST's obviously is better than mine. I'll just have to be content to drive them (still with Valenta's in for the time being (43013/43014/43062) at 110mph for a living. Thanks anyway.

  • Youre welcome!

  • At least the prototypes have got an loveley MTU Enginesound! nice vid 5*

  • really good video there (they look really ugly though)..5*

  • If it was the other way round, and the HSTs we have today where in the same shoes as the prototype, we would all probably say they are ugly. I dont mind what they look like, but their Valenta engines OMG...

  • wow! uploaded on my 20th birthday, great pressy this video is :D 5 stars!

  • Thx glad u liked the vid ... happy birthday

  • What an excellent video David, brought back memories when I saw the unit working in South Wales during the seventies, thanks for that..5*..Bob

  • awesome! first vid ive seen of her running with sound! 5/5!

  • Execlant, i stood next to one of these at the NRM a few months back...
