    It always works, because it comes from an identity:

    a*b = (10-a)*(10-b) + 10 * [(a-5) + (b-5)].

    In case of 6*6 you have 1 fingure down both on left and right hands.

    (1+1)*10 + 4*4 = 36

    In case of 6*7 you have 1 fingure down on the left hand and 2 fingures down on the right hand.

    (1+2)*10 + 4*3 = 42

  • Neat trick, but for your sake to survive in college, it's a waste of time. It is much better just to memorize all your times tables (at least up to 12), of course after you understand the concept of what "multiplication" is.

  • 2x2=4 correctly said adding two two times equals four short for 2+2=4.5x3=15 correctly saidd adding five three times equals fifteen short for 5+5+5=15. the beauty of the code is the longer the amounts multiplied the code is very short. write down 5x100 using longhand (adding five one hundred times equals five hundred) youll apreciate the multiplication code and easily see its quicker and faster to write 5x100..hope that helps. writing the initials of your name are another form of initailing.

  • the multiplication code is shorthand for longhand repeated adition, it is a initialing system and memory aid. repeated amounts are used because its quicker to count objects in rows than one at a time because in knowing that same pattern=count you can simply add the amount to each row instead of counting each object. its suppose to make things a no brainer for counting by increamenting/repeating the amounts.be sure and use something to count with (abbacus, pennies) when teaching multiplication.

    2x3=6 short for 2+2+2=6 pronounced adding/counting two three times equals six (or counting two objects three times equals six total).

    2x4=8 short for 2+2+2+2=8 correctly said adding/counting two four times equals eight total.

    6x7=42 short for 6+6+6+6+6+6+6=42 correctly said adding/counting six seven times equals fourty two total and so on. times is said at the end.

  • initials are a way of making writing something fast and short. its quicker to write 2x10=20 than to write 2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2=20. be sure and explain initialing systems to your students. 2x10 is correctly pronounced adding two ten times equals twenty. saying times in the middle confuses students who dont realize thier doing simple addition.

  • heres a simple trick. stop saying times in the middle, it goes on the end. 2x3 is not pronounced 2 times 3 correctly. Its suppose to be said adding two three times wich is what your doing. 2x4 is pronounce adding two four times.you can also say counting instead of adding. the first is the amount your counting , the second the number of times your counting. so 2x3 counting two objects three times or adding two three times. the multipication code is a form of initialing for longhand multiplicatio
