Many operators use semi break-in. With this method the transceiver switches to transmit when the operator starts to send code and holds for a user defined amount of time after each dit or dah is sent. The delay time is normally set to hold the transceiver in transmit long enough for a reasonable amount of text to be sent. This will vary with the sender's code speed and operating techniques. The relay noise is less of a problem when using semi break-in.
There are different technical ways to accomplish full break-in. The FT-897D uses loud relays which to some operators (me included) is annoying. The TS-870S uses relays, but they are very quiet. I believe the Ten-Tec uses pin diodes as no sound is heard.

With full break-in the sending station can hear activity on the frequency as he/she is sending and can stop at any time to respond like having a face to face conversation.
