This is in the original key. Get a piano and listen to some Carol Channing if you don't believe me. However, this is an octave higher than Carol sang it, which makes all the difference. From what I understand, Tams-Witmark also licenses a version of the score in keys more suited to a medium-range voice, possibly the same keys sung by Barbra Streisand in the film version.
What is the pianist playing - it only seems to bear a passing resemblance to the score. I know that this is a school production but the kids deserve better support than this.
good voice, but the key it definately too high for the style you're trying to sing in. You would really have to do a jazz wail to hit those high notes strongly enough.
this was filmed on a freakin didgital camera to it dosen't pick up the best sound of life..go check out her other vids of her singinf you will be amazed!
I don't know. All I know is that I have to sing it this high for call backs tomorrow and I'm a freakin' alto... so I'm really angry. This is like the only version I've found so far that is even close to this high.
@wiildkat26 that is exactly the problem i have. i sing alto or like 2nd soprano. the keys for this whole musical are extremely high. only 2 girls in our whole production can hit all the high notes. i have to make myself squeal to hit these notes.
@maggiebowman that's odd considering the music was written for Ethel Merman, who was an alto, and Carol Channing who was an alto as well...This song in particular was written for Carol Channing while the show was in out-of-town try outs in San Francisco, meaning the proper key of the song should be the one from the sow's original run...way too high here. It without question should have been lowered, especially. But that's not the performer's fault, blame the musical director.
@GoodbyeToBlueberyPie I'm having that problem right now... I'm playing Dolly and everything is just way too high. But what's the best way to approach a director about it? He barely knows what he's doing.
@maggiebowman I have this problem, too. I'm playing Dolly right now in my high school's production of Hello Dolly. I know that for "Motherhood March" our directer is taking it down a little, but I'm hoping he does it for everything. We double cast our musicals,so there are 2 people playing Dolly. I'm an alto who is able to sing soprano 2, and the other is naturally a soprano 2.
hey gabysylv this scene and play was great and the piano only was played during the solo for a reason and actually we had a great pianist and theres a reason for doing it how we did its called acoustics and guess what we had a band too
you are amazing, I'm so glad that someone with such beautiful vibrato actually received the part they deserved. Good luck to you and your future, honestly.
if you see the movie barbra's acting has more emotion and you need to work on that

ooohhhh, the piano player is playing with two fingers. I imagine how great this would have been with a band, or at least a good pianist
