Amalia Sang with such profound sadness. I heard this recording in 1955 in the French produced film: Les Amants du Tage. It was titled Lovers' Net in the English subtitiled film. I was deeply moved by her appearance and voice which remained in my memory. Thank you gobluesgogo for the chance to hear it again.

Originally was titled Mae Negra but Salazar prohibited that title... changed to Barco Negro and these days better known as Cancao do Mar sang by Maritza and Dulce Pontes. Something special about this fado that has gone through so many changes of title, but still the same impact of the soul of Portugals fishermans life at sea.

It was tougher to go into open sea in the 15th century that it is now to go to the moon.

That's what this Fado is about. How the sailors would go into the unknown with the uncertainty of never coming back to their wives and families. Amalia Rodrigues used to sing this Fado. Mariza sings it now!! :)
