I generally hate the one-upmanship of "he's better," "she's the best," "are you crazy, dude," and so on, BUT here I go: you positively have to listen to Julie London's rendition of Black Coffee. Sultry, silky, hot and black, she will blow you away. I know it was one of Peggy Lee's signature songs, and she does a fabulous job, as does the incredible Ella Fitzgerald. If I were on a deserted island with only one rendition of Black Coffee it would be Julie London's. Check it out.
@karinablacktie I just listened to Julie London's and you're right. This one is very good also. For anyone else reading this, Karinablacktie posted this video on her facebook page in honor of Red Holloway's 83rd birthday today. I was wondering if anyone knows if he's still performing.
Don't know your blues son!!! This is THE way to sing this tune...low down and doity...Good to see Red again. I remember when he was the house band at The Parisian Room in LA...
Trust me on this, Red use to hold it down at the Parisian Rom at least a decade or more 60s/70s. he would back such acts as Spanky Wilson,Arthur Prysock, Lorez Alexander, and many ,many more acts in los angeles during its jazz hey days. I now live in the Bay area and he's still doing it on sax, as witnessed by many in SF last year,"Jazz at Pearl's" in North Beach.
Just announced Red Halloway has passed away at age 87.
