Dukakis was leading in the polls by 5% when the Republicans aired the story about Willie Horton just days before the election. The fact that Dukais had nothing to do with Horton's release didn't matter, it caused many independents to vote for Bush and Dukakis lost. The White House also suppressed stories about Bush's ties to Iran-Contra, his drug running buddy and His girl friend Fitzgerald.

If the public had known these stories, Bush would have lost big time.
