That is to minimize the 'zig-zagging' of impatient people: it has happened a lot here in the Netherlands that people on bikes and stuff just sway to the other lane, and pass the gates... resulting, more than once, in fatal injuries.

Dat kon je altijd horen, want zodra de bomen naar beneden waren bleven alleen de platte bellen over.

Vergeet daarnaast niet dat de mechanische bellen tegenwoordig vervangen worden door electronisch opgewekte bellen, die via een luidsprekertje weergegeven worden.

Not completely true: when the crossing gets 'activated' again, while still in operation (barriers are moving up again) the barriers have to come down again, and then there could be a train, have seen it happen a few times with people who don't expect it, and do cross the crossing while the red lights are still blinking.

But being mechanical, they need periodic maintenance because their electrical contacts can wear out. Also, loudspeakers can aim the sound at the sidewalk with less sound

dispersing to other areas. I hate fake bells.
