great music should liberate the heart and mind as well as sound great. i grew up with the clash. theyve made me what i am today. politically aware, interested in the plight of all people everywhere. their significance is incredible
@degree7 Have you tried listening to the whole damn album, all 30 something song? It's a damn chore. It has a few gems, but it's not their greatest effort.
@RDBeatnik you kidding, right? Sandinista is there best! :D i could quite happily lisen through the album on a nice warm sunday evening :) each song is unique and differant to the last! great album!
This is such a great written song by Joe Strummer, and of course Mick Jones arranged the music perfectly as always. I wish so badly he was still around. So much turmoil in the world right now. Where is the political commenting in our music nowadays. We need a good band to inform the youth about what is really going on in the world so they don't become brainwashed by all this crazy political propoganda going on in our country right now.
@lj6241 - There is. Rage Against The Machine. I myself have often thought about forming a band and calling it PROTEST and play nothing but protest songs. All the good ones that are relavant and the truth.
I've been interested in the Cold War as long as I can remember...I just don't know how I let the Sandinista album get by me. It is full of Cold War themed music...and I am in love with "Are you red...y?" great song :)
"Find an Afghan rebel that the Moscow bullets missed. Ask him what he thinks of voting communist." It says it all, really. The sad thing is, look what happened. And Moscow's gone from there -- they've been replaced -- and it's still happening and it gets worse for the people, especially the women, all the time.
@SeraceCelerity No, his given name... from his parents is John Graham Mellor he was born in Ankara Turkey. Joe Strummer is a stage name he called himself this because he was a left handed person and he was taught to play right handed therefore he could only strum all the strings or none at all.
Moscows never gone from anywhere. It was washington bullets, crafted in the springfield armory in Boston Mass. helping the partisans (the maujadien, Bin Ladens people) fight the soviets in 79
Now its soviet made RPG-7s, AK-47s, firing bullets manufactured in the Kirov Heavy Armaments Factory in the Moscow District killing american soldiers.
If you start pulling bullets out of the dead in warzones around the world, they come from 1 of 3 places world wide.
Classic ..........First heard this song ......Along with Ghetto Defendant ....From the radio program Digressions with John Fisk In New York back in 1984
i have to do a project for music class and i picked The Clash the speech has to be 3 minutes long and we can pick a song to play for the remaining 2 minutes and im doing this song cause it's one of my fave songs by The Clash along with Know Your Rights And Straight To Hell
Great post. It is October 2008, but listening to this song and I am transported back ... I am young and I have just bought the triple album - yes, three big 12 inch vinyl records. Life has changed much since, yet this song reminds me plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.
@Jnk088 leftist thinking is great, communism is just an extreme take on things, which is never healthy. I personally prefer social democracy.

I think the Clash had a lot of fun making Sandinista.
They earned it. They ruled the punk scene for years, and made lots of great music.
This is their "Their Satanic Majesty's Request", or "Sgt. Pepper".
They went into the studio and let it all hang out. I enjoy all of it.

It's amazing how they were considered a Punk band but were so ahead of all the other outfits.
This is a song that even Toots or someone similar would be proud to play. IMO, this is an even better LP than London Calling.
