Ok you morons AFL is the American Football league they were called AFL before the Australian one which was VFL until 1990. You don't need to argue if Aussie football is better because this has nothing to do with it. Stupid Drongos. I don't see NFL fans on AUssie rules videos calling our sport gay because they have brains. Don't like American Football? Then Get the fuck away from this video.
@GibbsGibberstein the title of the video is incredibly missleading NFL vs AFL so you can see why Aussie rules fans are here.. and i do agree with them Aussie rules footy makes NFL players look like pussies, deal with it
@hoppy896 yes i can see why some are mislead. They come here see that it's not about AFL, leave. But no they want to bitch and complain about how much better Aussie Rules is, i love American football. AFL the AMERICAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE the one that merged with the NFL. But i can see how one would be confuses. (I am Australian myself and was watching a video about AFL and thought i would see aussie rules as well) Personally i like American Football. Wtaching Broncos v.s Patriots right now
Heres the things! it may show as if support for NRL is lacking because it may not show the numbers at games, Victorian people on the other hand have nothing else better to do!
NRL is very alive, add up supporters world wide and it will show how insignificant AFL is compared to NRL
@0SubscriberKing the only reason Aussie football is poular is because it's playe din Australia. you make a terrible point. Personally i like American Football and this video ahs nothing to do with Australian Football so fuck off.
@Freefilmproduction That sport's league wasn't called "AFL" until 1990. The AFL (American Football League) existed from 1960 to 1970. Also the other AFL(Arena Football League) was established in 1987.
What a lot of people don't know about Super Bowl 1 is that the Chiefs returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, but had to re-kick because the TV cameras weren't turned on. On the second time, they fumbled beside the endzone, and the Packers went in to score on the next play. I think that was a huge momentum shift.
this is about the american football league and the national football league. australian football and american football are 2 different sports and should not be compared to each other or disrespected by anyone.
@Blazivire6 People like what they grew up with and are most familiar with. Even as an NFL fan first, I can totally respect that. You got a great game "down" there.
@b0m83d After you get hit 60 times per game by a 300 pound guy who uses all his force each time in an effort to send you through the earth's magma from America to Australia, then make such a comment. I won't rip any sort of rugby, AFL or other football. All are fun to watch, and I've seen them all. (Heck, I had a cousin try out for the national sevens rugby team.) Put on the pads and scrimmage against an NFL team. Then we'll talk.
@NFLization When the National Football League and American Football League merged, it was agreed that the name of the league would be the NFL, made up of the National Football Conference and American Football Conference. To give each conference the same number of teams, Baltimore, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh were moved from the NFC to the AFC. (There were some other agreements as part of the merger, too.)
What this video failed to mention is that the feud really started to escalate when Al Davis took over as commisioner and really had it in for Rozelle. He wanted the merger so that he could take over as commisioner of the unified league(NFL) over Rozelle. Rozelle retained control after the merger and there was bad blood between the two ever since.
The AFL had trouble for 15 years winning the Super Bowl in the 1980's and 90's in blow out contests like 55-10 and the Bills losing 4 straight. The best NFC team was alot better than the best Afc team.
@jfiles000000 While that is true, other then that period of time, the afc has won the majority of the games outside of those 13 years (the actual streak).
The upstart American Football League drop kicked the NFL into the future with Innovations in plays, tactics, television agreements that set the stage for the modern game.
In fact, today original AFL teams such as The Patriots, Chargers, Broncos and the Jets are some of the NFLs current showcase teams.
In 2009, the 50th anniversary of the AFL's founding, original AFL teams wore retro uniforms, including the Broncos ugly striped socks (LOL)!
@nitroslipperz sure they were great innovations and Lamar Hunt provided a great business model... but "drop kicked the NFL into the future"... that's silly word choice.
@smitha4 The moment at which the NFL came to the realization that the AFL was here to say was whey they asked H.L. Hunt, Lamar's dad, after Lamar lost $1 million the first year of the Dallas Texans in 1960. H.L. said that Lamar could go on for another 150 years.
@alanpeel1981 Yeah, The Hunt family fortune wasn't going anywhere, and HL had full confidence his son would be successful. It is interesting to note though, that the NFL refused for several years to put a team in Dallas and they've since become one of the more storied (obviously not on par with that of Green Bay or Chicago) franchises in the league. Gotta wonder if the league office ever took a step back and wondered how much money they would've lost if not for Lamar forcing their hand.
@nitroslipperz What innovations are you talking about? The modern spread offense, combination zone coverages, the west coast offense all of have origins in the original NFL. Seriously what tactics are you talking about? The NFL was not contrary to popular belief 3 downs in a cloud of dust. Coaches like Sid Gillman
employed the modern passing attack in the NFL before the AFL even existed. Shotgun? 49ers

It already has rugby 7's wtf do you honestly think people want to see a bunch of pasty ass motherfuckers struggling to kick a freaking ball through not 1 but 3 sets of goal posts.
That by the way is probably the most generous summary anyone could give the game, not to mention no one needs to see Australians attempt to be coordinated.
Tell me Aussiemetalfucker what exactly is the purpose of a forward in gAyFL?
there is no possible way American Football compares to Australian Football.
Aussie don't wear protection, and the sport uses a larger variety of skills and extreme fitness. so wtf do NFL players do? they try and plot a perfect game plan for 10 mins then finally get about 10 seconds of "action" where it's just a bunch of guys bumping each other and 1 guy throwing a ball. NFL players dont compare to Aussie Rules players.

im australian and i love NFL and AFL but do you guys know if there is any aussie rules football teams in america because i herd that there was afl footy teams in america.
Yeah, there are. Actually as one of the minor sports in America, it's one of the more successful. The majority of the teams are centered on the mid atlantic seaboard, (baltimore area), but Aussie Football is pretty good stuff. However, with the preeminence of the NFL and College Football, it's hard to believe it will ever catch on as a major sport in America.
yeah, it's similar to the Jackie Robinson deal just after Kenesaw Mountain Landis died. Granted that was a bit more important, but there's quite a bit of correlation.
i dont give a FUCK IF U PLAY WITH NO CLOTHES u fucking jackass. have u seen the hits? they fucking rub up on each other and just try to wrap each other up moving at like what... 5mph?

shit look up the history of american football.
president roosevelt had to step in an cancel college football all together because more than 20players died in a
gAyFL is a bitches sport dude, thats why no one outside of Australia knows what it is, but in saying that I suppose only Australians would fit the criteria..........
if its gay....um why arent u guys not wearing pads, to pussy to get owned. and u racist little fuck. if u want me to get racist i will bring it on fuck face. stop raiding inoccent countrys and focus on the real problems, poverty for example
ahahaha You're an idiot I dont wear pads cause I dont play american football.....but I can tell you one thing as far as status goes for football codes Aussies fools is at the bottom.
And where exactly are you bringing it spaz.....cyber space bullies are redundant....Are you trying to compensate?
Fuck off clown dont you have skin to peel of your mums back?
no. im not the cyber bullyer. you srarted this. and im going to finish it. and how the fuck was i supposed to know u didnt play it......think about that one. Aussies fools is at the bottom....gee that isnt racist at all. fuck you american redneck. uve ruined iraq, whos next on your list?
Oh my god how did you find out cheese1233fucker dont worry dude I'll give your mum back to you as soon as I'm finished with her.
fuck you made out like you actually had comebacks, that was piss weak dude...but then of course you are Australian and I suppose we all know wit isn't really within grasp for you people is it.
I still only root for ex-AFL teams in the Super Bowl. Except for the Raiders of course. Growing up a Chiefs fan, rooting for the Raiders is treason. LOL!
i know. im not shitting you, my grandpa went over to america once and people recognised his accent and asked where he was from. he said australia and the americans asked him "how was the drive?"
While I'm a fan of Aussie Rules Football, this AFL is in reference to a now defunct American Football league, as it merged with the NFL in the late 60s, culminating in 1970.
Why the hell would they care about some Australian sport using the same initials? AFL is AMERICAN Football league.
Not what you were looking for, you say? Here's an idea, click that nifty little button with an arrow labled "Back", and stop your bitchin'. Grab some vegemite and hop back into your kangaroo pouch.
ok, your sport is American Football League and ours is Australian Football League. Both AFL. Just cos yours is afl too doesn't mean we cant call ours afl.
"Grab some vegemite and hop back into your kangaroo pouch" ok you yanks start a war with another random country invent some more junk food and assasanait another president and eat some burger king
Remember, the joining of these two leagues culminated in 1970 and that the Steelers, Browns, and Colts agreed (and were financially rewarded by the NFL) to move over to the AFC. Considering the Colts and Steelers have won 8 Super Bowl Trophies combined since the merger...the original AFL teams don't show a lot.
The reason why they moved to that conference was to even out the teams. There weren't as many AFL teams as there were NFL teams. The original AFL teams since the merger, have won 10 (12 including the Jets/Chiefs) Super Bowls. 2 in the 60's, 3 in the 70's,and 2 in the early 80's before the NFC dominated for 13 years. but by than there was no more AFL/NFL feud going on anymore.
Well, what if Lamar Hunt would have been able to buy the majority share of the Chicago Cardinals in 1959 and move them to Dallas? There probably wouldn't have been an AFL. He came up with the idea after Violet Wolfner, the Cardinal owner, told him of these other cities that wanted to buy her team and move them.
That's very true, but that's not to say another businessman wouldn't come along and try to start another pro football league and that league have been merged. Either way, I think we all win since we still have the NFL and the product they produce today.
Yeah, I agree that the AFL coming along turned out to be the best thing that happened to Pro Football. I just try to point out how things could have been different. As far as another league forming without Hunt's AFL is concerned, it depends on the NFL and it's expansion. If they didn't want to expand, then another businessman might have started another league by the mid-60's.
The NFL wouldn't be the premier pro-football league it is today if it wasn't for the AFL. Had they not merged, the AFL would be supreme today cos they were much more open than the NFL.
The AFL was known as the freedom league.......no racial barriers whatsoever. 1st to put player's names on the back of the jersey. Colorful uniforms. Classic shootouts/Wide-open offenses (not to ment. 2 pt. conversion).
Personally, I wish they hadn't merged (even though I was born in '76)
Had they not merged when they did, it was inevitable they would eventually. Bearing in mind they had better TV contracts at the time and more sponsorship loyalty, it was the better business model provided by Lamar Hunt which catapulted the AFL to the same status as that of the NFL. And besides, a little defense never hurt anyone.
absolutely, It may initially hinder the profitability of the larger market teams, but long term league wide growth is good for all markets, and revenue sharing is the best way to do that.
The AFL also was inovative in television. With their first TV deal, with ABC, the AFL introduced sharing of TV revenues among all teams in the league, two years before the NFL began doing so. Also, the AFL was the first league to put players' names on the backs of their jerseys, to help TV viewers identify players, and the AFL was the first to show on-field fights on TV, while the NFL censored their live broadcasts, having their cameras turn elsewhere during altercations.
That 66-24 Chiefs -Bears game was pre- season . The Chiefs also beat the Vikings in a 68' pre-season contest 13-7....maybe they had they're number all along.
Ok you morons AFL is the American Football league they were called AFL before the Australian one which was VFL until 1990. You don't need to argue if Aussie football is better because this has nothing to do with it. Stupid Drongos. While I'm a fan of Aussie Rules Football, this AFL is in reference to a now defunct American Football league, as it merged with the NFL in the late 60s, culminating in 1970.
smitha4 2 years ago
Why the hell would they care about some Australian sport using the same initials? AFL is AMERICAN Football league.
Not what you were looking for, you say? Here's an idea, click that nifty little button with an arrow labled "Back", and stop your bitchin'. Grab some vegemite and hop back into your kangaroo pouch.

ok, your sport is American Football League and ours is Australian Football League. Both AFL. Just cos yours is afl too doesn't mean we cant call ours afl.

30Stack 2 years ago
The reason why they moved to that conference was to even out the teams. There weren't as many AFL teams as there were NFL teams. The original AFL teams since the merger, have won 10 (12 including the Jets/Chiefs) Super Bowls. 2 in the 60's, 3 in the 70's,and 2 in the early 80's before the NFC dominated for 13 years. but by than there was no more AFL/NFL feud going on anymore.
Jikk 2 years ago
I just a soon the Colts, Steelers and Browns had never joined the AFC. All three clubs have had some great teams though, no doubt about it.

Well, what if Lamar Hunt would have been able to buy the majority share of the Chicago Cardinals in 1959 and move them to Dallas? There probably wouldn't have been an AFL. He came up with the idea after Violet Wolfner, the Cardinal owner, told him of these other cities that wanted to buy her team and move them.
a7b7c78 3 years ago
That's very true, but that's not to say another businessman wouldn't come along and try to start another pro football league and that league have been merged. Either way, I think we all win since we still have the NFL and the product they produce today.
smitha4 2 years ago
Yeah, I agree that the AFL coming along turned out to be the best thing that happened to Pro Football. I just try to point out how things could have been different. As far as another league forming without Hunt's AFL is concerned, it depends on the NFL and it's expansion. If they didn't want to expand, then another businessman might have started another league by the mid-60's.
a7b7c78 2 years ago
The NFL wouldn't be the premier pro-football league it is today if it wasn't for the AFL. Had they not merged, the AFL would be supreme today cos they were much more open than the NFL.
The AFL was known as the freedom league.......no racial barriers whatsoever. 1st to put player's names on the back of the jersey. Colorful uniforms. Classic shootouts/Wide-open offenses (not to ment. 2 pt. conversion).
Personally, I wish they hadn't merged (even though I was born in '76)
KL58383 3 years ago
Had they not merged when they did, it was inevitable they would eventually. Bearing in mind they had better TV contracts at the time and more sponsorship loyalty, it was the better business model provided by Lamar Hunt which catapulted the AFL to the same status as that of the NFL. And besides, a little defense never hurt anyone.
mynameisbrie 3 years ago
Indeed revenue sharing was key for a successful revenue model.
WC3POchannel10A 2 years ago
absolutely, It may initially hinder the profitability of the larger market teams, but long term league wide growth is good for all markets, and revenue sharing is the best way to do that.
smitha4 2 years ago
Wonder what it would of been like if the NFL merged with the AFL and it would be The American Football League Today instead of the NFL?
MIKECNW 3 years ago
Well, we did merge with the NFL, not into the NFL. And it SHOULD have been called the AFL after the merger!
WC3POchannel10A 2 years ago
The AFL also was inovative in television. With their first TV deal, with ABC, the AFL introduced sharing of TV revenues among all teams in the league, two years before the NFL began doing so. Also, the AFL was the first league to put players' names on the backs of their jerseys, to help TV viewers identify players, and the AFL was the first to show on-field fights on TV, while the NFL censored their live broadcasts, having their cameras turn elsewhere during altercations.
