The answer is no, and the evidence is that he was playing on the wrong strings. For a layperson, I agree he did a fairly good job, and the effort put into that should be respected. OKAY IS THAT GUY ACTUALLY PLAYING THAT PIECE, OR IS IT A REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY WELL DONE COVER-UP!!!!! In the last ten seconds or so of the piece, you can see he shifts all the way up on the E- string. But the last note is higher than that note, and his hand is lower on the fingerboard. But the rest of it looks SOOOO FREAKING GOOOODDD to be a cover up!!!!!!!!!! (btw, at the end, paganini's 5th caprice anyone?!!)

In the scenes where Pope's back is turned to the camera, I think it's actually Joshua Bell in a wig. The technique is too good for Flemyng's limited faking abilities, and he's also moving his body in a very signature Joshua Bell way.

I heard Joshua Bell LIVe play with the Waco Symphony in Waco, TX about 8 years ago. He performed the Bruch Violin Concerto and did THIS piece as an encore. He played it EVEN FASTER live than he does on the recording, and MORE perfect. WOW- I didn't think it was possible, but I heard him live. The entire audience jumped to their feet after the last note. After having sex with his lover back stage and using the "red violin" he got from the gypsies (they're shown in the video), he was inspired to play that virtuoso improvisation. The orchestra members might have been annoyed he decided to be so bold and show-offy, but the audience was actually entranced by his performance.
