I agree with not PURPOSELY overfeeding animals, but we have 6 cats, and one of them happens to be very big because, although we feed all of the cats at the same times, and the same amount of times a day, the bigger one always eats their leftovers, and used to be given even more food by our neighbors. So it kind of hurts when everyone is saying it makes me a bad pet owner and such, I love my (accidentally made) fat cat :(

You should also tell your neighbours to stop feeding your pets, they have no right too and it's insulting. An obese animal will develop a lot of skeletal problems as it ages, costing you a lot in vet bills and have to witness the animals pain. So, try a bit harder to make that cat lose weight. I don't think you're a bad pet owner, you just need to put your foot down more.

Indoor / outdoor cats can put on quite a lot of weight in winter. They know it's winter and they are moved to eat more to survive a harsh climate and lowered prey species. I'm not sure why this also affects house cats-they have over 1000 prey species and from that are the top predator with few difficulties living anywhere - even in the Baja desert in Mexico. We have four cats from feral queens that were living easily in the Baja desert. Cats are incredible survivors.

The main reason indoor cats get fat is because they don't get enough exercise, not just their diet. When my cat started to get fat (even though he was eating properly) I made sure to play with him more and rile him up so he runs around to get enough exercise, and he slimed right down. So yeah, even if you're feeding your animals right, if they don't burn off the calories they will get fat, same as people.
