  • Awesome interpretation!

I notice the word fealty in the poem. I thought it was a typo until I looked it up. An oath of fealty, from the Latin fidelitas (faithfulness), is a pledge of allegiance of one person to another.

    Thanks for this vlog, Ella.

  • I am interesting about your sign language. I am Australia (Queensland). I am glad to hear about your news.

You can see my youtube as 73busymum, ok?

    Take care.

  • @pdurr Thanks! I hope to see the old films with Amos Draper in them soon. You are such precious and wealthy source of Deaf historical and current information. We re very fortunate to have you among us to learn from.

  • So beautifully interpretation thru ASL. I surely do have a space in my heart for Gallaudet our only one DEAF university!

  • Deck the halls with boughs of holly, Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Deck the halls of Gallaudet Fa la la la la, la la la la... :D

Nice ASL translation. Interesting how different you view this poem from 40 years ago. The differences are amazing. More meaningful to you. Same thing can be said about reading the bible. I read this Scriptures before, then some times later, read it again, and I find special meaning in it.

Thanks for sharing and appreciate that you subtitled it too.

  • @BigBenFactor Fa la la la la! grin. Indeed, pieces of literature can create different dimensions and increasingly deeper understanding over time, the Bible included. May our understanding of Deafhood expand as days go by with things like this poem and actions by others are critically examined, and celebrated appropriately as well as criticized if needed for better Deaf humanity. Happy holidays to you.

  • As always, you are our Poet Laureate! Thanks for sharing this poem and your thoughts about the connections to our past and present. The times are alarming, indeed, and I share your concerns that oralism is starting to truly penetrate into Gallaudet.

  • @DrDonGCSUS Let's hope for the best--that Gallaudet and Deaf communities surrounding DC and elsewhere--have not become TOO comfortable thus not paying attention to what's happening around us and not constantly seeing the big picture so they can continue to help Gallaudet push for a stronger and healthier Deaf center sooner.

  • Interesting, Amos Draper's poem was 1872, it is almost 140 years ago, pretty long long years ago. I never hear or read about Amos Draper's poem.

  • @CanuckSRY hi. A bit of correction here. Draper graduated from Gallaudet with Class of 1872, but his poem was published in Buff and Blue much later, in 1907. That's what I know. I don't know Draper much either. Been learning a bit about him recently.

  • A classic poem! I am touched by your message. Thank you for preserving this poem many years. That is the meaning of love for deaf people. Love conquers nevertheless.

  • @TheStralie Thank you. Love your comment about love =-)

  • Thank you everybody for showing your appreciation of my yet-not-totally-satisfactory attempt to translate this poem. Yes, we need to be vigilant about Oralism's (and audism's) constant conscious or subtle attacks and infiltration of Gallaudet. Also, push for majority selection of Deaf/ASL-centered people (educators, activists, businesses, organizers) on its boards, faculty, or as consultants. After all, Gallaudet as a role model needs healthy boosting that will positively impact Deaf world.

  • wow, it is so awesome peom I love your signing! This is very strong touchy and given us thought of what happen to Gallaudet today! We always stand for Gallaudet no matter what happen and let fix this problem!

  • SIGHS! So beautiful! i hardly can blink cuz it's amazing poem! got goose bump more than twice...

  • beautiful poem. Artistic concept of Amos Draper's time: history repeats, we need not to re-live it. Expose awareness means RESPECT and power-sharing, not overpowering. appreciate your thought and interpretation.

  • T H A N K Y O U!

your craft, artistry, commitment, vision, giving, loving, etc wow!

    thank u

    peace

    patti

  • Bravo! Your translation is beautiful! Yes, it's bad that corporates are meddling at Gallaudet Univ. and controlling its board of trustees. It can affect Deaf people anywhere. It's moral and legitimate to protect again to expel them. I didn't know about Draper until you introduced his wonderful poem. Thanks!

  • Very beautiful Poem! Thank You for your vlog ox
