the scene where they break out into song in the cafeteria? That's a remnant from the original, the song Hot Lunch (which was AWESOME btw) sung by irene cara, but i will say it was way more crazy and spontaneous than the remake. (looking forward to the dvd release to see the director's cut/deleted scenes)
I like your review. it wasn't a terrible movie, it just didn't work most of the time.
I blame the studio for making them cut it down. Its so obvious. Just watch the trailer. Its made up of a bunch of scenes that arent in the movie. I bet each character shot their own story but their is no way a movie can tell 10 complete stories in 1 hr and 40 mins. They should have cut it to 5 students. I can't blame the actors if they didn't WOW anyone. They were never even given a chance to shine.
You can't pronounce the director's name? Look it up. Don't make fun of him. Kay Panabaker isn't a good actress? Do you know who she is? She has been nominated for 4 Young Artist Awards and won the award in 2005. Plus, she won a Rising Star Award in 2007. On top on that, she graduated from UCLA at 17. This is an updated version of the film, not a remake. You guys need to grow up. It is one thing to make a bad review, but it another thing to be idiotic and make stupid comments.
I appreciate your comment and criticism. I am willing to admit when I am wrong. You are right, we should've done our research more thoroughly and it was childish and unprofessional to mock the director's last name in an otherwise serious review. But update really is just another word for remake, as is reboot, reworking and reimagining. It is just semantics. In regards to Kay Panabaker I would like to see her in something, but based on her work in Fame I was underwhelmed.
She did have a thankless, underwritten role and maybe she simply couldnt do anything with it. The director was perfectly capable at directing the dancing sequence, but clearly was unable to direct actors and even good actors need direction. I was impressed with Panabakers singing and monologue at the end, but I wanted to know how we got there and again thats the fault of the script not her. I didnt like the character and perhaps I was too quick to take that out on the actor.
but the dancing, singing and adult actors were amazing!! we needed more interaction between the students & teachers. The directing was good, but the editing guy just had TOO MUCH FUN cutting scenes lol. the stories were all over the place!!!! it was too general and it just showed us things we all kinda already know. so it was good, enjoyble, fun, but just not what a GREAT movie is. you guys r good :) just dropping some thoughts, I disagree with some stuff, but overall you're right :)
I need to see the original, have you seen it? I'll get back to you if you like with my thoughts on the first one if you like. What it comes down to is the film lack substances. For a fun surface movie it is fine, but I could've been more than that and what makes it frustrating is there little hints of what that more could've been. I'm glad you liked the video and thanks for sitting through all 10 minutes. :)
lol no prob, i love listening to people talk about movies. I believe what happened was that they wanted to make this huge, fun, exciting dance movie, & every once in a while they went "oh yea we need a story" and squeeze it in. i was very impressed though with the opening of the movie of the light bulb bursting and the ending. the graphics were interesting :)
you really should see the original!!!!! it's amazing!!!!! it totally has the amazing dancing and singing, but it has character depth (though it is a bit epic at around 2 hours long). It has memorable characters, and it is a gorgeous movie!!!!!! definitely worth a look!!!
I understand everything you guys say. It could have been ALOT BETTER! but I enjoyed it, I will buy the DVD :) I actually liked that it could have been set ANYWHERE :) The character development just wasn't there. The comment about the girls dancing and the guy being told he's not talented enough, I believe that was meant to show that SHE HAD TALENT, remember that the teacher used HER as an example of GOOD DANCING in class. My favorite parts were Megan Mullally :)
You raise a good point about the scene with the student being told he wasn't talented being cut together with girl that was, but still say it undercut the drama of that scene. That juxtaposition between his lack of talent and her abundance of talent was already made. I could absolutely see owning it on DVD which would allow you to skip directly to the dance and numbers and skip the poorly written and acted story.
yea that's true, they should've concentrated more on the guy, but I understand why they did that. I did cry in 2 moments, when he was about to kill himself(because I undertsand how horrible it is) and the graduation scene. the dancing was beautiful and they slowed down the camera at the right moments. Very beautiful! It's a shame it wasn't AMAZING, because it totally could've been. They needed to have 2 directors not 1.
