I see that folks will use Linux as their main computer. But all I see is that it's good as an Internet PC. Strange that if it's quick to boot, free, and requires less resources why have all these tablet makers chosen Android or Windows 7 Starter? It makes me think that Linux doesn't provide anything by way of applications (aside of basic apps and an office suite). Discuss.

@hulkhatepunybanner im from argentina.apart from using WINE or another windows emulator on linux, there are lots of aplications for linux. most of them are at the ubuntu software center that comes with any gnu/linux version and others are on the internet... many softwares have a version to be run on gnu/linux.Other advantage between XP and any ubuntu version are drivers... ubuntu looks for free drivers for your hardware or in another case it ask you to install private drivers. ask me your doubts

@hulkhatepunybanner you could not be more wrong. really the only reason i use windows is because i play games like 50-70 hours a week. but for actually getting stuff done in most cases linux will do it faster and for free. python and ruby are preinstalled, and java too. and you get a far more powerful command line interface that can do all kinds of awesome stuff. and to top it all off, you are not as big of target for malware.

Linux is good for computer hobbyists and web surfers. If I ever build that my own version of KITT, Linux would be my OS of choice. I wonder if it can talk to OBD systems.

@hulkhatepunybanner linux also has libreoffice, which is pretty much exactly like office. although i dont use some of the more advanced features of excel, so i cant say for certain if it would meet all the needs of most people that use it for real. really, all most people do on their computers is word processing and web surfing, and linux does that very well. and sometimes better and sometimes not as good. and i forgot the best part, its FREE

@ctoon6 LOL. Unfortunately, free isn't enough with most people. Market research has shown that consumers have the impression that free software isn't worth using. Now if a company could port Mac and Windows applications to Linux and sell them installed on a laptop or Mimo Plug there might be money there. But ONLY if those applications show some kind of performance gain compared to their Mac/Win cousins.

@ctoon6 "Indoctrination" doesn't exist here. Organizations pick whichever OS their IT guys recommend OR whichever vendor gives the best deal. My high school used PCs. My university used Macs. But there is no marketing for Linux, Unix, or Amiga. Folks can't be blamed if the info isn't easily available. All the versions of Linux doesn't help either. I can't even tell the difference between them or which is the best or most popular.

@hulkhatepunybanner just to remind you, android is linux based. Almost all of the web servers (and mail, dns...) run on Linux. Even the new Mac OS kernel is mostly based of linux/unix. On the other hand, most of the offices in the world are working with Windows 2k3/2k8/XP/7.

I switched to Ubuntu which was a mistake. Using an HP Pavilion dv6 notebook the fan was on full all the time, the bootups were about 50% successful, the OS was slow, the laptop would overheat, Ubuntu couldn't detect the microphone, after more than 40 minutes of use the OS would freeze up. I switched back to Windows 7 and it was bliss: an OS that just worked.

As someone who is educated in the world of blackhat techniques, I know, unlike most people, that AntiViruses do NOT somehow magically stop all viruses from making their way onto your computer, they only stop known viruses, which is of course not all of them-I also know that an overwhelming majority of viruses are designed to specifically target windows that's not to say Mac and Linux don't have Viruses but just that very few viruses are designed for mac and even fewer for Linux.

Misleading competition. I had a few Linux systems before and their default boot up sucked. Took ages to load. You had to modify it to boot fast and it took some tweaking. Very nerdish. I am now today using Insta Boot for windows 7 and I already inside in seconds. It only required 1 install. Done.

Just like today I was trying to edit video with Linux and there was nothing good. I tried Openedit and it was not so great. It was fuzzy on the video and there's a codec or something incompatible going on. So I went back to windows and did it in Vegas Pro.
