  • this was really good except for the clip of Gollum...that wasn't on Earth :-p

  • im quite a sensitive guy but the vid didn't evoke any emotional response out of me. I knew i was straight :D

  • I cried.... This should be translated to every language.

  • And people like to think they are important lol.

  • lik dis if u cry ever tim

  • @PongoBluetooth Well said. Stupidity also applies to anyone making such a claim.

  • THE LIFE AQUATIC!!! YES!!!

  • the speaker has a very good point.

    TIME TO BOYCOT

ive got guildwars 2 to make me happy

  • Is it weird that I didn't cry during this video?

  • WHAT TROLLING CUNT DISLIKED THIS! WAT THE FUCK!

  • The movie starts out great. Somewhere around halfway through the music kind-of drowns out the narrative... other than that: Gorgeous film.

  • Film at 6:14?

  • Is there someone who could identify all of the movies shown in this?

  • 2:40: King and peasant. :D

  • So literally just watched this immediately after I finished The Grey....man do I feel tiny and insignificant

  • @theblazingraven ... we are apparently echoing each others lives. If you suffer any serious problems in the future, I would appreciate the 2 minutes heads-up.

  • Setting Sagan's beautiful talk to a bunch of movie clips doesn't exactly deliver the same impact or feeling as the original imagery of just the pale blue dot. Movie clips?? Was that Braveheart I saw in there, and Reservoir Dogs?

Seriously....cry for this video?? It's a bunch of movie clips. Using real life photos or clips would have at least been something.

  • It may be just a dot, but it's our dot.

  • Carl Sagan is just incredible, and he lives in my heart still.

  • According to the founder of Scientology L. Ron Hubbard, the dictator of the "Galactic Confederacy" Xenu who, 75 million years ago, brought billions of his people to Earth in a DC-8-like spacecraft, stacked them around volcanoes and killed them using hydrogen bombs. He used the IRS to gather the people. That religion seeks to preserve us from nuclear destruction. Source Wikipedia And everyone calls them wacky. How is Carl Sagan any different?

  • @timetomakeauturn Sagan is only speaking about what has he observed and we can observe and UNDERSTAND, and make SENSE of what he's said. The lips that the words have come from are completely irrelevant. He is but a teacher of facts, and were it from a 7 year old boy from a long lost island it would remain the same. We can decide for ourselves, THINK for ourselves. Sagan provides guidance in this. How dare you compare him to L Ron Hubbard!

  • @gacwalker Here,here!

  • Very good and intesting.

    - Schnäuzelbärtchen - ;)

  • Does anyone know where the scene @3:26 is from?

  • @AmanTux1 yeah, it's from Kelly the coed.

  • @AmanTux1 Reservoir dogs?

  • Perfect.

  • I can't favorite this video enough

  • Awe inspiring. Nothing more I can say

  • Pathetic for this to drive you to tears? What kind of heartless monster are you, and why are you on this video?

  • I've got guy love for Carl Sagan

  • Everytime I watch this I end up with tears welling up in my eyes. It is good to remember how small we all are.

  • What biology does to make us fantastic, astronomy does to make us minute. Context from the microscope and context from the telescope, we stand in the middle, surrounded by the truth of both worlds that we make up and that we are made from. I feel conflicted, significant yet humble.

  • umm its really beautiful but i think its a bit pathetic for it to reduce u to tears

  • @marmoh123 Some people cry because a celebrity dies, some cry because they lose something precious to them, some cry because they win something amazing that will change their life, others cry because they are amazed by life and the universe.

It's totally cool to cry for this video.

  • Whats the movie with the general guy saluting?

  • @schpex Patton (1970)

  • does any one ever wonder if the whole universe and out side of that and so on is just sitting on a tiny peace of dust? or what if im/we just dreaming about this. i mean time goes ridiculously fast when we dont pay attention to it.

  • This is so profound. Brings tears to my eyes.

This should be shown to kids in all schools across the world.

  • Carl Sagan does the enormity and wonder of the universe poetic justice.

  • what's 3:04-3:07?

  • Sagan's speech could have been louder. This video is awe inspiring by the way.

  • BUELLER

  • I can never understand why people are so cruel, Sagan points out with such elequence that I can only hope to achieve, That we are small, eventually we will be forgotten and we are only here once. For the breif moment we are alive on this earth why should we waste it on being cruel, bitter and greedy. For money? power? I'm only young, but I hope I don't waste my life worrying about what I have, but to be more like Sagan and make the world, even for a moment, a better place to live for all.

  • This is one of the best renditions of the "Pale Blue Dot". Very nicely edited and put together. I also love the short clips of various movie scenes - brings back good nostalgic memories.

Great work and thanks for sharing this with us!

  • our pale blue dot, is the best pale blue dot.

:) I love our pale blue dot and everyone in it.

  • What movie is the scene at 3:32 from?

  • @DamanSingh155 American History X

  • @HunterSThompson88 Thanks man. :) Appreciate it.

  • @DamanSingh155 No worries, heavy flick but a classic.

  • Whats the western at 3:02?

  • @Designandrew Once Upon a Time in the West

  • GOD's work

  • @alcojigmpfi dont be ridiculous, a magic man in the clouds had absolutely nothing to do with it. That's the whole point.

  • @alcojigmpfi There is a word for the belief that the entire universe was made just for the primitive inhabitants of one tiny, insignificant speck...

    Arrogance.

  • @tutopololo I can understand it just fine. Maybe it's above you.

  • @haywardmj "its above me"? i don't understand what you mean. Im just outraged that i can't hear all because some music, just let the audio as it is! i was looking for hearing this with no music, looking for hours! and this was the last of all the videos and got tired and comented that stupid thing, thats all.

  • whats the movie at 4:16 please reply

  • @lukakitanovski Brazil (1985)

  • apparently the pale blue dot has no black people...

  • @Sabu632 One could only wish...

  • @Sabu632 except for Michael Jordan ..

  • Comment removed

  • I just listen to this on a loop, over and over again.

  • I am a Christian, and I approve of this logical perception of life.

  • 2:33 mordor isn't on earth.

  • @webmastertool But the idea of mordor only exists on earth.

  • We're an invisible dot, on an invisible dot...only Zaphod Beeblebrox matters ;)

  • I wanna go to the green dot.

  • I'm a 17 year old male believer, and when I see this video I believe in God more than ever. We're so incredibly small in this universe. Greatness, can be achieved by all walks of life, both believers and non believers alike.

  • This is the best Pale Blue Dot video so far. Yes it may seems some part that its not serious but then again, that wasn't the point.

  • vary well don I personally thought that the music volume was perfect and the build up was perfectly executed. The idea of using movie clips was also vary original and sets this vide apart from all the other Carl Sagan tributes. favorited and shared. Can I ask where you found the audio of sagan reading this. Im thinking of creating a tribute of my own just for fun.

  • You REALLY think that shitty, synth music is SO IMPORTANT you had to drown out Sagan? Really? lousy

  • Whats the movie with all he tophat guys?

And the movie with John Malkovich playing poker?

    Help please

  • @schpex

    the malkovich one is Rounders.

  • I don't like thi version. The background music is too loud and the videos clips are kinda... not serious.

  • "Our responsibility to preserve and cherish" the insignificant pale blue dot? The speck that has no significance? We're to whistle in the graveyard and believe that we matter, even when we know we do not Carl? What hypocrisy! Our destiny is that of the dinosaur Carl, so get over yourself! Oh yeah...that's right...you're dead! So much for destiny!

  • @WSGAC You're missing the point. How wonderful is it that we're here, alive in this time when the universe is opening up to us, and we're just beginning to understand it! Our fate may yet be that of the dinosaurs but for right now, this small, insignificant moment in eternity, we're here, and we know we are. And that's just beautiful.

  • @TheRealLazloFalconi beautifully said mate.

  • happy birthday to Carl Sagan. Few people in history have been able to inspire their genius in so many others.

  • Happy birthday Mr. Sagan, you truly are missed.

  • Happy birthday, Carl. Thanks for being a bro.

  • I'm a 17 year old male atheist, and when I see this video and think about how small we are in this amazing universe, I literally almost start to cry. I love my pale blue dot, and I wouldn't trade it for any other dot in the universe...

  • @D0CT0RPR0CT0R

I don't know mate...what if there were a world with free chocolate....I might be swayed :D

  • @D0CT0RPR0CT0R what makes you think its YOUR blue dot my friend? what makes you think anything could be YOURS? Point is, the human ego attaches itself to things that are tangible when in fact the ego doesn't exist at all... the brain simply creates a sense of self to make sense of its perceptions.

  • @D0CT0RPR0CT0R The one thing ive always wanted to do is see it first-hand from space.

  • Comment removed

  • @D0CT0RPR0CT0R as another 17 year old male on the verge of tears, I read your comment and i dont even know to say. When I get fed up thinking about the evils that people have committed to our dot in the name of money and a fake God, I come here attempting to restore my faith in humanity. it always works.

  • @D0CT0RPR0CT0R Same here friend...:) It is nice to know that I am not the only one who feels this way...I guess our feelings prove that we are human.

  • @D0CT0RPR0CT0R What does being atheist have to do with anything? I'm agnostic myself but I bet if I was a beliver I would love my pale blue dot just the same.

Let's just all get along :)

  • @FrankCostanzasLawyer If you don't believe in the existence of a deity, just admit that one is possible (like I do), you are still, by definition, an atheist.

I don't think he meant to be divisive. If I'd said it, I'd have intended to say that even though I don't believe Earth was consciously designed to be special, nor to specifically matter to me, it really does. Here's more love for our little mote of cosmic dust, and the thin film of life on it! :)

  • @D0CT0RPR0CT0R Are you my twin brother? D:

  • @D0CT0RPR0CT0R I agree dude I'm 18 years old and the video didn't almost make me cry but I felt the catch in my throat then read your comment and my eyes welled up, I wouldn't trade either, in a million years for a billions things, this pale blue dot for any materialistic possesion. The fact we do exist is phenomenal and that's enough for me, I just hate the prospect of some humans going through this existence alone.

  • @D0CT0RPR0CT0R fuck off redditfag.

  • I dislike that 90% of this film is set to films. Showing real life events would have made this video more effective.

  • My only criticism is that 98% of the clips are from Hollywood films which means they're all fantasy. This erodes the significance and realism of Carl Sagan's words. This film would be devastatingly touching if you used video/pictures from *real* moments in history (Eg. WWII, paintings of Kings & Queens, 9/11 etc.).

  • Shame the sound is so bad.

  • @AlanAnthonyDoyle The sound *quality* is actually fine, that's just Mogwai's music that sounds like that. They're noisy and distorted; all their music is basically several heavily-distorted guitars playing at once.

It grows on you. I wouldn't have chosen this song for this video, though, I gotta say.

  • @boiledelephant

I'm not talking about the music. I know who Mogwai are. The voice sounds like someone with a bucket on their head. Just my opinion :D

  • @AlanAnthonyDoyle

Ohh yes. The whole audiobook was like that, I've got it. It was recorded in the 90s but sounds like it was recorded in the 70s; low-budget audio/video quality seemed to be a recurring thing with Carl Sagan.

It's a great book, though, I recommend it.

    /wiki/Pale_Blue_Dot_(book)

  • I hope this has a meaning for everyone

  • @abrelosojos18 This should go before Fear & Loathing and after Miller's Crossing:

Anything in brackets I couldn't guess for myself.

  • @abrelosojos18 The [alec baldwin film] was Glengarry Glenn Ross

  • There's Gattaca at 3:08.

  • in my opinion, this is one of the most important videos ever made. i get goosebumps every single time i see it

  • who the fuck disliked this?!?!

  • Without cheating: Willy Wonka, The Big Lebowski, Some Like it Hot , Moulin Rouge, ?, Momento, ?, ?, Amelie, ?, The Ten Commandments, ?, Terminator, The Lord of the Rings (Either 1 or 2), ?, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, ?, It's a Wonderful Life, Life is Beautiful, ?, The Life Aquatic, To Kill a Mockingbird, ?, ?, ?, ?, Vanilla Sky, ?, Gladiator, Braveheart, ?, Hero, Reservoir Dogs, Gangs of New York, American History X, Taxi Driver, Mystic River, Citizen Kane...

  • ...2001: A Space Odyssey, Hero, Dancer in the Dark, The Usual Suspects, ?, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, Superman, North by Northwest, The Shawshank Redemption, ?, ?, Blade Runner, Rear Window, Lady and the Tramp, The Proposition, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, ?, Singin' in the Rain.

  • Wait, scrap It's a Wonderful Life. I got mixed up. I was only meant to write Life is Beautiful. I always get the titles of those mixed up!

  • it needs much more views

  • @veronicachic I recognize Willy Wonka, The Big Lebowski, Big Fish, The Lord of The Rings, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Its A Wonderful Life, To Kill a Mockingbird, A Space Odyssey, Hero, Reservoir Dogs, Citizen Kane, American History X, Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind, Superman (of course), The Lady and The Tramp. Can anybody tell me what the last movie in the clip was? Looks interesting.

  • @BAMboozlrisforGibo You forgot Memento, man. The final movie, by the way, is Singin' in the Rain.

  • @BAMboozlrisforGibo it's Singin' in the Rain (1952)

  • Comment removed

  • Astronomy is very humbling indeed. It's a bit like what the philosophy of Buddhism says, "we are nothing". Self realisation is true enlightenment.

  • 4:54 ?

  • @veronicachic That's Guy Pearce and Danny Huston in the Australian western THE PROPOSITION.

  • @hughlilly oh my goodness, thank you so much! love you!!!!! eeepp

  • I need a list of every single movie in this clip!

  • @veronicachic I know the one with Edward Norton, the one with the Swastika sign on his chest is from the movie American History X, There is Lord of The Rings, To Kill A Mockingbird, Space Odyssey 2001, Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind, Leon The Professional. That is all I know.

  • Wait I saw more: Superman, Shawshank Redemption, Singing In The Rain

  • What's the movie at 4:12-4:13?

  • Comment removed

  • well done. it's this version I seek out when I refer people to this video. the music is perfectly matched. like.

  • very cool

  • Who the hell disliked this video?

  • Ego death is an amazing thing...

  • Crownexo: If you have to ask, you missed the whole point of the video.

  • A metaphor on our insignifigance in the vastness of God's glory. But, Where are the BLACK people? Are we not on the pale blue dot? Were we not here 1st? Michael Jordan, Don Cheadle, and 1 gladiator, huh? LOL! That's another metaphor...

  • @crownexo To quote Sagan himself "God is mans invention, not the other way around"

  • Where are the black people? Are we not on the pale blue dot? Were we not here 1st? Michael Jordan, Don Cheadle, and 1 gladiator, huh? Lol!

  • @crownexo why always look for that crap? they used the images they knew of... nothing racist about surely

  • Tears to the eyes.

  • does anybody know what movie is 4:34 is from?

  • @cheweyk09 Mission to Mars

  • It's unfortunate that this person decided to add a montage of movie clips which really undermines the impact of what Carl is saying. Too bad.

  • @fathergrimes Exactly what I thought. It made me think that if Hollywood is the height of our civilisation, it wouldn't be so bad if this particular pale blue dot was snubbed out of existence.

  • @fathergrimes You're absolutely right. What a horrible, horrible idea. Shot of Smeagol? Just because Carl said 'creature'? It's very amateur, and causes the audience to say "oh that's from X movie" instead of actually reflecting on what's being said. That, compounded with the fact that you're showing fictional accounts of humanity while we meditate on the truism of our existence. It's bad. And the sound mix is bad too.

  • ~Why the heck didnt this end on one final image of the blue dot?!?!?! That would have been PERFECT!

  • This needs to be translated into every known language and shown to every last inhabitant on this "pale blue dot".

  • I love being part of a sentient, self-aware species.

  • Beautiful.

  • the video and music take away from the powerfulness of this piece. it's distracting

  • This is the best video on YouTube

  • can you list all the movies you used making this video...

  • @3DSAN Ask palebluefilms, they're the ones who made the video. Durfan's simply posting a higher quality version.

  • waiting for reply haven't heard anything from em yet..

  • Remember, people:

    EVERY DAY IS AN EPIC

  • I love this video so much! So well done, with Carl Sagan himself reading, and all the wonderful clips.

I got the book Pale Blue Dot for Christmas and look forward to reading it :) He's my hero

  • I saw the original a year ago.

This video literally changed my life.

  • @UDoHaveMyName same, i loved this video so much that i decided to put it into my presentation for why we need space exploration

personally, i now want to become an astronaut

how did it change your life?

  • I think the video is just perfect the way it is - palebluefilms did an amazing job with it. Thanks for posting an HD version, Durfan.

  • Love the quote, but you need to turn down the music. Or maybe choose something a little softer.

  • Really Impressive. Maybe some subtitles could enhance the experience.

  • An amzing quote, and an excellent video. Thanks for posting it!
