While I wasn't a big fan fan of George Bush, it's way too convenienient to blame the this awful trajedy on him. Would it have been any different with Al Gore or John Kerry at the helm? I'm not so sure. That being said, I still find myself watching this video over and over agian. I love this song. A great song and great commentary, even if you're not sure if you agree. Very similar to 41 shots...
president bystander...hey that's every last one of them since Roosevelt.we've been sold out..or souled out if you prefer...game over..game over..game over..."Said I'm with ya..then he took a little walk..." think about that for a minute..Uncle Sammie loves you..bullshit..another number to work into the ground til old then to shoot out behind the Chemical Shed.Sad Things,Sad days..sad end to a great story.Pray for Us ALL if you're one of those who still pray.
What are the last two words he said before he started the song? Does anyone know. It was something to the effect of President bystand or whatever that means.

It was the State of Louisiana that failed to help the people of New Orleans and the New Orleans mayor!!! They should be assigned some blame too!!! I like what Springsteen does, but I don't agree with him on that. Presidents make mistakes. It was not his doing!!!
i watched all the other bruce springsteen performances of this song . not to mention loads of others an in all honesty .. his voice never sounded as strained as it does here ever .. well maybe on seven angels on TRACKS lol .. to listen to i like the other performances alot better ... but in terms of passion .. this performance is great an the passion shows strongly an urgency in the message an his voice ..if id heard it on radio would think he having a bad voice day .but seeing it makes it great
I just have 3 things to say to the ignorant FGGTS right below :
- Cooder did NOT write this song, Bruce says in his speech that it is Blind Alfred Reed who wrote it (in 1929) so if you are unable to hear that, how can you be able to judge this song ?
- The US has not got the highest living standars in the world. The highest is Norway. The US 6th. And be sure that even in the US, some people do not live decently.
- Springsteen is nothing but the Boss, he rocks and that's a fact.

Apparently Springsteen and his wife recently agreed to buy an $850,000 horse for their teenage daughter. They are being sued for allegdedly reneging on the deal. (Their daughter already has a $200,000 horse.)

Excellent timing of the suit, too! At the release of a new album and tour, just when media attention on him is at its height. I wonder if the lawyer billed his client extra for that?
So what's your little point, neocon? That rock stars are millionaires? That rock star millionaires sometimes have trouble when they buy things? "Apparently," "allegedly" -- do you know the story from Bruce's side?
Apparently Springsteen and his wife agreed to buy a pizza at Fat City Ron's for $16.85. Fat City Ron said that their daughter also got a Pepsi.(Bruce paid respects to the men's room before departing)
How can anyone not hear the truth in this song? unless, you are paid by the Federal Government to refocus the blame. Way to go Bruce!!! I am with you, and I live in Canada. Thanks for posting this great video!!
Judgement is coming Mr. Bush, and that's a fact. Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Ashcroft, Roberts and some of the other former or current members of the Ruling Facist Regime will be sentenced harshly. It will take this country decades to recoup from the actions of these selfish, malicious miscreants. "Them who ain't got left to drown" happened all over this land, not just New Orleans. When the poor and middle class get it and when the wealthy regain "conscienceness" is the start of recovery.
No one forces anyone to buy a freaking t-shirt; at the end of the day, it is the concert itself, and the costs aren't out of line...and his donations and work for those not at the top of the food chain is pretty unique
To those who judge Springsteen simply by the cost of his ticket prices -- take a look around, pal. "Working class families" drive $40,000 SUVs and watch plasma TVs. You may not believe it, but quality comes at a price. And I have yet to see a Springsteen show that was disappointing.
It's not 1978, and you can't see Bruce at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ for $10. Get over it.
As a longtime resident of Asbury Park, I know EXACTLY what Bruce Springsteen has done for "working class families" and the schools, playgrounds, business districts, local museums, food banks and just about every other organization a "working class family" might come in contact with. Unlike just about every other rock star on the planet, Springsteen does this without press releases or TV crews. He just lives an honest life and supports his local community.
IG, I'm a Jersey Boy too. All the good things that Bruce has done with his time and money are hardly secrets. Don't waste your time throwing those pearls before idealogical swine. Facts don't sink in to their puddin' heads.
netslob u need to quit bitchin, and listen with your ears to this badass song, smoke a bowl, chill out. no one cares if Bruce Springsteen loves money, cuz we all love money.
NETSLOB- = dumbass. 40$ T-shirts for the kiddies.? At what concert in the history of mankind sells toddler's shirts for 40 bucks? aahahaha uhh probably never in the history of all concerts...and- it wouldn't cost 340$ to go to this concert for 2 adults and 2 children. Slob u r full a bullshit, shut your mouth.
Springsteen cares about working class families? Okay, how much would it cost for a family of four to attend one of his concerts. $340 for tickets...plus, let's include a couple of $40 t-shirts for the kiddies. We're at $420 -- and we haven't even had any food or drink yet! All for 2 hours of entertainment.
Again, one must wonder: "How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Ticket Prices?" Springsteen cares about making a LOT of money, first and foremost.
So,NetSlob,I assume you were in N.O. during Katrina and Rita and the contiuing aftermath? It makes no difference to me how much money Springsteen makes, at least he shows he cares. How much did you contribute to help rebuild a devestated community?
First of all, Slob, Bruce could easily get away with charging three times his concert ticket prices (like the Rolling Stones), but he won't. Second, your argument that he can't stand up against poverty and government incompetence because he's rich is paltry and idiotic. His charity and donation work for those without is second to none. Get a clue before you open your fat piehole.
He played this show for free. He made a six figure donation to N.O. relief, zero publicity. He quitely supports many many causes with free concerts and cash, especially around his hometown. He organized the Vote For Change shows in 2004 in which about 20 bands, included his own, played for free to defeat Bush/Cheney. His ticket prices are 1/3 of other musicicans of his stature and popularity. Does he have to give all his money away and live in poverty to sing about it?
Listen to the video. He announces the song was written in 1929, before Cooder was born. Bruce wrote the last three verses. It's easy to label anything "piss." It's harder to explain this view. Do you have the ability to explain yours or is it a knee-jerk reaction to something else, ot what? Seriusly, please elaborate, if you can.
