Sometimes companies can take offense if they believe that the other company is making false statements about the quality of their products in teh commercials, but they can also be quite funny, and create brand awareness. e.g. this ad states that Audi has all 4 characteristics of 4 major companies...

I think it's YEARS old. Minimum 10 to 15 years. Audi would never ever compare itself today with Alfa...I think the ad was broadcasted only in the US as comparative ads were (are?) allowed there, but not in most European countries.
