Painted shells aren't only toxic for the hermit crabs usually, they also can provide too much insulation which can make it hot and uncomfortable inside the shell. Sometimes they can be glued inside as well

Aww! Cute crab. Mine changed in my hand last week. I was holding her and I had a shell in my hand that my mom gave me when she got home. and I was watching tv and I looked down and my crab was naked going in another shell. It was gross. She fell and her bottom hit my hand. It was fuzzy.

hermit crabs eat their shells for calcium sometimes, and paint is toxic to them, so good for you, take that shell out asap =)

Chances are, your hermit crabs came from one of those places, or worse. Do not buy hermit crabs from pet stores. Instead, adopt from hermit crab forums. Be sure to view the video. And PLEASE re-post this wherever you can for the sake of hermit crabs!
